This is specific to the bicycle department. My husband and I have had our bikes tuned up and had occasional tire repairs done here. In the past, the service has always been great. The team members are friendly and knowledgeable. Our last trip was the complete opposite. The gentlemen helping was rude to my husband when he brought his bike in to have a tube changed. He was quoted a price and told he couldnt do it right now. In the past they have done it on the spot and it has taken less then 5 minutes. But no big deal. My husband told me the price quoted, and I was surprised, they were charging him more than double what I had paid for the same service less than a month ago. I had not been charged a service charge, and I only had to pay for the tube itself. So my husband returns to pick up his bike and brings cash for the transaction. When he is rung up, they tell him it is actually more because he quoted the wrong price for the tube (again, I just had his other tire tube replaced a month ago for the lesser priced tube and no service charge). Well, now my husband did not bring enough cash and they would not honor their original quote. We wont be using them for their bike service department after this, but all other departments are great.

One good employee, one bad...In mens shoes I was assisted by a very nice older gentleman who was very helpful and gracious. After selecting a pair of ecco sandals and proceeding to the cash register I was surprised to be checked out by someone (cashier 127092 it says on my receipt) who--to put it mildly--acted like they were doing me a favor by taking my money. Clearly they felt they had better things to do than wait on customers. A very unpleasant experience being checked out by someone who, in the politest terms, was not very nice. We will think again before visiting this REI. As members of REI wed appreciate it if employees with bad attitudes would do us a favor and stay home or get another job.

The salesperson honestly stated that he didnt want to be at work. It showed. I dont know how this company to which we always had a great experience at for over 25 years; could possibly accept this pathetic attempt at any sort of service. Seriously...figure out your payroll budget and take half of it, and start a fire on the floor, and throw money into it. Cash money into the campfire on the floor. That would be a spectacle worth coming back to see! Because your service certainly didnt work at all today. In fact it just gave me the newest example of how bad customer service can get. Negative POINTS

Friendly service with a great product. As everyone knows rei is dedicated and committed to bringing top notch outdoors gear. I recently had a problem with my tent and brought it in and was met with kind service and was set up to be back camping in no time thanks to the help of the store manager Eddy. If it wasnt for his ability to make the right decision on how to solve my problems I dont think I would be coming back. Eddy is the man you want to talk to he is very reasonable and a down to earth guy.

Bought $160 pair of Oakley sunglasses. Was told they didnt come with a box or a case. The cashier asked the manager after telling me no. But the body language of the manager really said to me that his honesty was questionable at best. I feel like they just gave me the glasses from the display and kept the case and additional lenses. Every other time Ive bought Oakley sunglasses they came with a case and additional lenses. This REI location has shady staff. :(

This is usually a pleasant store to shop at with most employees being very friendly and knowledgeable. However, I have had a few instances with staff being rude, not answering questions, and trying to sell me product I already told them Im not interested in. No need to push a sale and be rude to customers when the customer has repeatedly told you they do not want that product (Footwear department). Ive had better experiences at other REI locations.

Besides Adventure 16, REI is my go to place to purchase any outdoors equipment. Ive bought numerous pairs of shoes, hiking boots, backpacks, tents, camping gear, and maps from these guys. The store associates usually know what they are talking about, and if its not crowded, they will give you tips and chat about hikes. However, they always price their stuff at full retail, so I typically only shop during their sales.

Shady operations,!!!! Avoid this store at all cost REI you should be ashamed of yourselves!!!! letting go or firing employees in Encinitas who have been with the company for 20 + years right at Christmas time!! coincidentally as your store in chula vista is abruptly closing to reallocate other employees..i have chosen 1 star because I cannot choose zero .. you are the scourge of the earth

Its actually on the north end of Town Center Pl, behind the Islands and am/pm station. Many of the staff have personal experience with the gear, and are really great at recommending equipment for beginners, without overselling. In my experience, always genuinely helpful.

Absolutely love this place. Become a member for yearly dividend check. I received 126.00 back one year and bought a Biolite stove with it. My daughter love to go with me to check out the camping gear. Its a smaller store but they stock enough. The staff is always helpful.

Dont get me wrong, I really like this place. There is just another adventure / outdoor store in the area that I like better. Small business to. REI has a really good reward and membership program. If you shop there at all you should sign up

They are so helpful here! When they couldnt process an online order for some reason, they jumped through a ton of hoops to make sure i got my item with the promotional credit i had originally used, and all right before they had to close!

This place is always worth checking out, but especially before a camping trip. The employees are friendly when they arent trying to get you to join their membership, but it is definitely worth it for the garage sales they put on.

Staff is always super friendly and informative, smaller store than San Diego, so limited selection in comparison but they are happy to ship anything that can be found online. Not a huge selection of Patagonia and no Icebreaker.
