I really love all that REI has to offer, but WOW, are their employees all on drugs? Every single time I go to this REI, Im having a great time browsing around and checking out all the awesome gear they have, but when I need help, the employees are useless zombies! I hate to say it but its the truth. I recently went today (4/5/14) and was looking for a specific backpack. There was a man working there, early twenties, so I asked him about the pack. I even pulled up a photo on my phone that was a snapshot of their website. He says, "What are you asking me?" and gives me a blank stare. I asked again, showing him the photo, "Do you guys carry this pack in store or is it online only?" His response was, "Whats your question? Are you asking me if I know about it or if we have it?" And I repeated my question... Without even looking around, he just stared at me and said, "no..." in the most monotone voice. Then proceeded to walk away. This isnt the only bad experience Ive had with employees in this REI. Which really is a shame because I always hear about how friendly they are... Not the case with me when I go there. Seriously though, REI... Can you make sure your employees are friendly people? Maybe even drug test them, because Im telling you, theyre all in such a zombie-like state and have such slow responses. And theyre rude. Such a shame. I do NOT dislike REI itself, but rather the employees that make it such a horrible experience. About the only employee that was kind is the one that says goodbye to you at the door.

REI has quality outdoor products with a goal of 100% customer satisfaction. REI is a cooperative with a membership rebate at year end. You are not required to be a member to shop and they do not check your membership card at the door. The REI customers number almost 2.5 million. The San Diego store is a great place to browse. The sales are frequent and offer real discounts that make a purchase possible. Here are three clothing items I treasure: (1) my Merrill shoes - they were at a sale display by the front door - regular price $130 - mine for $14. That was three years ago and I wear them often. (2) my NorthFace jackets - fleece soft as a baby rabbit $69 and another with a windwall lining $99. (3) Fox River socks $10. For 70 years REI has been an environmental leader and GREEN; here is how: (1) reduce their carbon footprint. (2) use green building standards (3) use paper only from known sources and well-managed forests. (4) reduce waste and recycle. (5) use sustainable materials in their products and packaging. It is a joy just to walk through REI.

I want to begin with expressing my love for this company as a whole. Washington made out like a champ with Costco, coffee, and REI. Now, there are awesome employees here that make each and every trip not like any other REI I have ventured into , like Gib. Hes amazing. Very knowledgable, respectful, and honest. Along with a few other rock stars that honestly, I cannot remember the names for the life of me, and I am terribly sorry!! Unfortunately, there is one person I would was not too fond of. Somebody I expected to be a leader and mentor. Somebody who should lead by example, not abuse the power. His name you ask? David. The only shift manager/key holder. Whatever power you hold sir, it does not allow you to act in such a manner towards this other customer and I. A team is only as good as its worst player. I hope you one day realize that being in the customer service business will actually require you to assist customers in a friendly, open manner.

REI has lost its skill and expertise. I walked into a lackluster storefront where the employees had zero experience with the product sport they were selling. The climbing department was represented by someone who clearly never participated in outdoor sports but probably spent alot of time on-line shopping. Another staff member had no idea where to find a replacement cup for my Jetboil stove. I felt like I was on the Truman show; all the employees were out of shape and wore blank expressions on their faces just milling around with no purpose or intent. The stock on the shelves left much to be desired and it was suggested that I just order some shoes online, PAY FOR THEM, and then return in order to try them on!! Seriously? Isnt this what a storefront is for? To get exposure to product, learn about it, try it out, and then buy it!? Thats what I went in for...

I like the amount of gear REI has and the REI brand gear is pretty darn good quality usually slightly less then competitive gear. Knowledgable staff for sure... Where I have a problem is some things are way way way over priced, so much so that if youre willing to do a little research, you can usually find a better deal other places. For instance, I bought a Marin 29er mountain bike, a week later I was walking through Sports Chalet, saw my bike there, decided to take a look and I was disgusted because I payed nearly $300 dollars more. I love the bike, so I went to REI and asked them about it, the the lady just looked at me, said we dont price match, we dont offer military discounts.... Well I was polite, and bit my tongue and left. I brought the bike back and since it was still under the 30 day warranty, and I bought the same one from Sports Chalet.

100% customer satisfaction and they mean it. Cant believe how crowed the place was on a Saturday morning. I fell and cracked the face of my 6 month old Garmin handheld this morning and by noon I had a replacement! No questions asked. Garmin doesnt even cover the face of their devices, but REI gave me a brand new one today. Hassle free and risk free shopping. Great Store and company. Thanks..... Oh and their handheld GPS was less than Garmin and comparable to Amazon. If I bought my GPS from Amazon, I would be sending it to Garmin and paying for the repairs. You definitely get what you pay for at REI and if you dont like it or it breaks, no risk. Now who can beat that. Well maybe Costco?

I went in to exchange a pair of shoes that broke down prematurely and the sales associate treated me like I was trying to scam them and accused me of "wearing the shoes too much" and tried to make me feel like I was doing something wrong. After a heated exchange I demanded the manager who came over and gave me the same treatment. After another heated exchange the manager gave me my money back. I have shopped this location many times and never ever treated like that. I will no longer go there. I will spend my money at Roadrunner across the street. Worst customer service ever in over 3 years of shopping there!!!

(my result via REI phone customer service): "THEYRE SLAMMED RIGHT NOW." Be the reply what this REI" gave when I ask for the preferred sales dept. Rather than REI asking me for my concern of calling. This REI not give me the option to remain on hold. Only tell me "call you back." In an aggressiv e mode. (as businesses that claim to call back, but never call back.) POOR customer service, for the HIGH PRICES of REI. ALWAYS When THe Sun Be At Its Brightest, And The Largest Herds Are In, AGGRESSIVENESS Is Kicked Around. As in why I barely shop at REI as an REI member.
