At this store the customer service is terrible. The 2 managers I talked to were rude. The first did not have a kind demeanor at all, he had no sense of being sorry and just said no, gave me the same answer I already heard 5 seconds before from another worker who butted in the conversation and just did not seem as if he cared at all. I mean at least pretend to be sorry that you cant help, thats the point of customer service. Then at least Id say oh its an REI policy and he seemed like he wanted to help, oh well. But the fact that he just didnt care made me want to make this into a big deal. The other one was nice until he put me on hold to go talk to the other workers to see what they said to me, then he changed tone completely and started being condescending and telling me my problem didnt make sense and thats why I cant return my item. I got one answer on the phone then got a completely different answer in the store, then called headquarters twice and got the same answer I got the first time which started this whole mess, that makes no sense. Usually I dont complain so much but the whole situation was just dumb, other workers butting in, a not kind manager, and a condescending manager and most of all the inconsistency is ridiculous. I regret wasting my money that just went into the pockets of rude jerks. Im just so mad at all the inconsistency, its stupid and makes the workers there look dumb and rude.

Recently went in to exchange an item my wife purchased at the Village Center location to find out this store did not carry the same item. It was an inconvenience which is understandable however the customer support/care was unacceptable. We found two associates holding a personal conversation on the sales floor who were bothered by us interrupting their conversations and their only response to our question of if they could help us locate the item so we could exchange it was is each store is different. Based on this I dont think I would buy any large ticket items from them as they seem to not really care about helping customers and seems that their personal conversations are more important that helping customers.

I love REI but when we asked a staff member for popular outdoor activities in the area she was quick to say "I dont live here" a bit aggressively. We asked for anything she likes to do in the general area since were visiting here for vacation, and she kept saying she didnt know... Listen, I know youre not directly trained to answer every question in the universe, but if you dont know, ask another team member that you know enjoys outdoor activities. The interior of the store is beautiful and offers a decent selection for outdoor enthusiasts ranging from beginner to moderate experience. But if youre unsure about something or looking for guidance I dont recommend asking the staff.

I purchased a pair of vasque shoes. They within four months fell apart. When I went to return them in the chandler, az store I spoke with a manager (valentine). He asked me "how long did you expect them to last?" Uuuuuuuummmmm, I would expect them to last a lot longer than four months. He seemed to think that four months was an acceptable life expectancy for a pair of shoes. The condition they are in is unacceptable for four months of wear. He refused to grant me the one year warranty of 100% satisfaction because it didnt cover ordinary wear and tear. My shoes falling apart after four months is not ordinary.

We went on the very last day of the anniversary sale on Memorial Day afternoon. The store was super busy. My husband was looking at mountain bikes and Brett came over to help. He was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. The bike size we wanted was out of stock, so he told us how to order it on line and still get the sale price. Then on to the bike racks and there was David. He showed us all the cool things the racks could do and help us make a few decisions. We did not buy anything in the store but went home and ordered the bike and rack online. We plan to pick up at the store.

Man, this is disappointing. They took a really great store in Tempe and turned it into a flashy, Indie warehouse with half of the product they use to have at the old location. Items were out of stock, employees were no knowledgeable, and pricing is outrageous. Can we have our old Tempe store back? REI is supposed to be the go-to for outdoor and adventure needs, and now its turned into a trendy shop where you can get your organic pre-packaged food and super fashionable pull-over, but not a functional water purifier (they only had 1! brand!). Get back to your roots, REI.

Two stars is even kinda pushing it. I used to go to the old location on Southern and Preist fairly often and the employees were always very friendly and knowledgeable when it came to their products that they carried. However, Im not sure where the old employees went but the customer service went along with it. I asked a lady about a certain product and she continued to sigh and have very little enthusiasm about working at an REI. I could be asking for a little too much when it comes to the employees performance, but the old location performed at a 5 star level.

I went in late on a Wednesday night to pick up some last minute camping supplies for the coming weekend. Although the new store, inventory and ease of shopping there was great, this review is specifically for Maggie who helped my girlfriend and I check out. She was pleasant, chatted with us about our purchases and was the definition of good customer service without it being disingenuous. Because of Maggie, we signed up to be REI members and will definitely shop at this location again. Thanks for all of your help and I hope her good work gets recognized!

Love the new location!! Been coming here for years! Always get help from James who is amazing!! Just recently bought the wrong Osprey pack and they had no issues returning it and upgrading me to the one my fiancé really needed. Also bought my daughter a 30° REI kinder cone sleeping bag for our trip up north. Nights got in low 30s and she was nice and toasty! Still love Osprey Paco Premium I bought with James help 2.5 years ago! I will never shop anywhere else for my outdoor gear! Cant wait till the garage sale!!!

Definitely has a great selection. The employees are hit or miss. Some are passionate about helping, some seem bothered to help. Love the store, yes prices are high, but you get to try and see items that you cant find elsewhere. **edit** Went in today for a couple of backpacks. Worked with a guy by the name of Bryce. Was extrordinarilly helpful and spent the time to make sure we found what we needed. Updated my previous rating to reflect this.

I have been an REI customer for many years and although I have never taken advantage of their return policy. I recently had a rip in a $250 jacket that I had worn 1 time. The fabric was not well built and REI would not stand by their product. The reason I overpaid for a jacket is because I believed in that when the time came they would stand by their product. Customer service was lacking and I wont be shopping there again.
