Do not go to the Madison store for the garage sales. This year they put it in the back corner of the store. The shelves of the stuff were only one person wide from each other so that there was no room to move. Then the clothes were put in a one way hallway that lead to the bathrooms and the water fountain. This also meant that they were so close that they were only one person wide. Then on top of this they let everyone in at once (50-70 people) at 9am and just said that "the sale is by the shoes". No ticket system. No first come first served. Nothing. It was an absolute mad house and quite dangerous with people running and pushing. They also do not negotiate on any prices nor do they mark down later in the day like most other REI stores. Some of the prices were ridiculous. A $50 headlamp that none of the bulbs worked in and it didnt turn on was $20? while a working good $60 one was $11? The employees said that they have a new GM and she decided to do it this way and "were taking notes". Do you really not realize that a tiny space with 70 people isnt a good idea? We then went to one of the Chicago stores and it was MUCH better. Far nicer person running the sale and far better items.

Weve always loved REI. They have nice stuff and usually good customer service. However, if you are an REI Member, they will probably tell you that you dont need a receipt to return things. KEEP THE RECEIPT ANYWAYS. I spent $100 on a solar phone charger a while back and specifically asked about the return policy when I bought it, as I was a bit skeptical of how well it would work. REI told me, as a member, I had 1 year to return it and I didnt need a receipt, as they store all member purchases on their computer system. I thought that was really convenient, and thus, threw the receipt away. I went in last weekend to return the solar charger (it just isnt that practical in Wisconsin... to many trees when youre out in nature that block the sun), but my purchase was not in their system, so they would not allow me to return it. So now Im stuck with a $100 solar charger that I dont really like. So my 1-star rating is a result of that experience. Otherwise, I think REI is a good company. I just feel like they should have accepted my return since it was an error by REI that prevented my return. Lesson learned... HOLD ON TO YOUR RECEIPTS!

Ive visited this REI on multiple occasions, which is two hours away from where I live. Their customer service is second to none, each time going above and beyond what is expected in the industry. During their garage sale events, when the odds and ends of returned items and REI Outlet discount items are sold, I have found the best experiences. On one occasion the boots I purchased looked exactly the same in color and design, however I noticed when I got home that they were completely different brands and height. I immediately called the Madison REI and informed them of my predicament, living two hours away and having purchased these for my girlfriend so I didnt bother trying them on after I looked at them initially. The sales associate was gracious enough to not only process a new order for the correct boots, but also to discount them down 50% instead of the 30% off that I had purchased them at. This also came with free shipping and we received the boots three-days later! I couldnt be more happy to be a lifetime REI member and be able to visit this location whenever I need new gear for my outdoor experiences.

If you are looking for niche/specific outdoors equipment that you dont typically find at other sporting goods stores youll find yourself happy to be at REI. Although expensive, they do carry quality equipment and have staff who are actually aware of the function of their products and are willing to help you. They cover equipment from camping/kayaking/snowboarding/hiking/fishing and everything in between.

Very knowledgeable staff who make you feel comfortable and assist with what will work best for your outdoor trip. There are many events and classes that are offered through this location. If you enjoy any part of being an outdoor person, this is definitely the store to visit and be surrounded by a staff that is very passionate about adventure and quality.

They used to have more gear for the true outdoor athlete but over the last ten years they have catered to the explorer wannabe, their getting overpriced crap for college girls and hipsters. In a few more years its going to be like abercrombie and douch! They need to get back to their roots, great gear at good prices for the real outdoorsman!

I came here after a bad experience at the Brookfield store. I thought this store had a larger selection. They also had clothes that the Brookfield store didnt have. Staff asked me if I needed help and they were all nice and helpful. Id rather go to this location than go back to the Brookfield one even tho its a lot closer. Thanks Madison.

If youre not there in a Saturday youll have to fight off the employees who are trying to help you (not necessarily sell you anything, just offer advice and swap stories). If youre there on a Saturday youll have to fight off the crowds for the sale items and the attention of the employees. So just be prepared either way.

I had a problem with a bike computer/ speedometer purchased 2 years ago which I recently took to the store seeking programming expertise. Although the staff admitted not knowing such detail, he offered help with solutions he saw work in the past. I give him a good "E" for his very friendly efforts.

Every REI I have ever visited has friendly staff, but the folks here go above and beyond. There are always smiling and knowledgeable people ready and willing to help. The classes that are offered are great for someone looking to get into a new hobby, giving a great base knowledge on a variety of topics.

Excellent customer service and such knowledgeable staff. We were just in last week to get some help with a bikerack that we bought from REI. Kevin was incredibly helpful and kind. I am so grateful we have a REI here in Madison, WI!

Super knowledgeable staff that will help you with anything you need. They wont guide you to the most expensive thing. Good selection of gear but know that everything here is geared toward high quality and higher prices.

Shocked by the apathy if the staff!!! Waited 15 minutes in an empty store to get a pair of shoes. The only reason I gave this place two stars was that the inventory is good. If you need help, go elsewhere!

Nice place. Staff takes an interest in what youre looking for. No topographical maps, but thats on corporate. Easy to get to, great location. Overpriced compared to Walmart or Fleet Farm for sure...

Customer service is top notch! They stand behind their products 100% even to the point that some people abuse how good they are. Im driving 2 hours to get to one just because they are that good.
