I bought a 1999 model vehicle from Universal a few months ago and was happy to find a dealer that sold older, high mileage but still relatively reliable cars at good prices. Dont expect anything on the lot here to be in perfect shape...any 10-year-old, 100,000 mile plus car is going to need repairs, but even with the price of getting things fixed its still going to be much cheaper than buying a new car! I enjoy working on cars myself, and know many trusted mechanics, so buying an older vehicle doesnt bother me. The vehicle I bought has needed over $1000 of repairs---a door hinge, ball joints, coolant flush and eventually a fuel pump---but thats all to be expected with an older model, and the price of the car itself was so cheap I still am coming out way ahead financially. The salespeople at Universal allowed me to take any of their vehicles to the mechanic of my choice anywhere in the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area. I would recommend you do so before buying the car, and pull a Carfax report to be sure your vehicle of choice has a clean title history. Dont trust the state inspection sticker, as the garage Universal uses to inspect its cars is very lenient on what it will pass. Also, if you live in Northern Virginia or any other jurisdiction with an emissions test, have someone plug in an OBD-II scanner to check emissions trouble codes. The on-site mechanic at the dealership resets the check engine light on the cars they sell, but that only turns off the light and doesnt fix emission problems. So...I highly recommend Universal Auto Sales if youre looking for an older car and are willing/able to spend money to fix what needs to be fixed. Dont blame the dealer if the vehicle you buy needs repairs...they buy cars from dealer auctions (generally trade-ins from Northern Virginia dealers) and dont know the history of them.

I recently bought a 1996 Saturn SL1 from this company. It was not cleaned out at all (interior was worn and dirty, had dog hair all over the back seat), that didnt bother me at all, simple vacuum. Im buying a used car, was bound to have one thing or another wrong with it... Alignment was off, they took the cost of an alignment off of the price they were asking. Later found the battery needed replaced (old, was somewhat expected), serpentine belt was cracked, and it needs some hose work. I suppose all of that could be forgiven, as anyone more car savvy than I wouldve been able to spot it upon inspecting the engine. However, about a month after I drove it off the lot the stick-shift busted. Had it looked at, and apparently the cable (for 1st and 2nd gear) between the transmission and stick, was being held on with string and duct tape. Unless you were to take the interior apart to check, theres no way to know... the stick seemed to work fine when I test drove it. Im not saying whether or not you should shop here, but if you do, be very wary, as their quality assurance is apparently lacking. Be ready to do some major work on the car. They may or may not have been the ones who did this, but they obviously dont really check out their cars very well before putting them on the market. Theyre only interest is getting it working enough to get it off the lot, and they do NOT have warranties, so once you got it, you got it. Tread carefully. Im sure some will say this would be the same at any car lot, but for those who wouldnt expect it, this warning is for you.

Spent hours looking at the lot, the salesman kept trying to push a car on me that had several obvious problems. When I saw a Nissan I actually liked, that was a higher price (also with higher mileage) the salesman tried to discourage me from buying. Test drove it and liked it. Haggled on the price with him for a while...got him down as low as I could (3800 for a vehicle with 158000 miles on it with no working radio....YIKES). Drove the car off the lot to take it home and almost instantly the check engine light came on. Called the company of the supposed warranty I bought and they said they had no record of my vehicle (even though the salesman faxed a copy of the paper work to them.) Then called the dealership to let them know there was an issue with the car and they told me that I need to call back later. Honestly, I do not think I would ever buy another vehicle from them again. They push the cheaper cars off on people to get rid of them. Also, did not have a very reasonable selection.

There is a decent selection of used cars, but the experience was less than good. I did go in knowing I was buying a beater, thats what I wanted and needed, and thats what this place offers. The sales staff was probably the most disappointing part. I feel as though they are the embodiment of what you think of when you hear the phrase "used car salesman." They were a bit shady and when I asked for the CarFax it became very obvious as he attempted to hide that the vehicle had already been in an accident. Fast talker, makes promises without writing any of it down. Make sure anything he says is written down and dont sign a thing until youre 100% sure its all there. The day after I bought the car, it did not start up that morning. The engine also stutters once above 60MPH, which you dont get to test out on a test drive. Ill never go back, and Id highly recommend to others to look elsewhere.

Went to get my boyfriends car with him at this place and explained he traveled 45 minutes to work everyday and we needed a SAFE and RELIABLE car. These crooks had us pay 3000 for a Honda that was beat up, and after a month of having it, it overheated. After we fixed the overheating process, the engine blew up and we bought a new engine, then the transmission went out and at that point we just junked the car, the sad part is we still owed 2800 dollars on it, and put 2000 into the car. Not to mention, when we bought the car, it was FILTHY and they claimed to have cleaned it. I received a bill in the mail to pay for the tags to be shipped to my house, I called Universal Autos and went off, and the only good thing about this place is that they ended up paying for the tags to be shipped because I complained about how filthy this car was.

These guys are FAKE. I went to this dealer looking for a good priced used car. As soon as we get there, we were greeted by Sam. Your typically pushy car sales man. These guys buy the worst cars from auction and dont even check them out before putting them up for sale. Basically your chance of getting a good car are ZERO TO NONE. All the cars we checked out had the "Check Engine" light on or something else wrong with them. After a new minutes of sitting in the office, I could tell all they wanted was the money. Sam made multiple offers like offering to buy parts or "fixing" the problem with the car. **WARNING** ALL THE CARS WITH NEW DEALER TAGS ARE ALL RETURNS BECAUSE THE CARS BROKE DOWN OR SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THEM. Worst place ever. I wouldnt recommend this place even to my worst enemy.
