We had high hopes after a long day of walking in the heat & being sent to a few closed places by our phones. Alas, we were underwhelmed by Rio de Gelato. The menu offers pizza by the slice, but apparently thats only during certain hours. I prefer a lighter pizza, hubby is a meat lover. A large pepperoni & a large Hawaiian cost the exact same. Since they wouldnt sell us slices, I asked if we could do a half pepperoni, half Hawaiian. "Sure, for $3.oo more." ?? "You want to charge me $3 more for something that is the same price, but Im only asking for half as many toppings?" "Sorry. Thats my boss policy. " Seriously? Never mind. They were out of Caesar dressing for their Caesar salad. My $5.oo salad was half brown and cores. No soda fountain, only cans and bottles. No ice but what the cashier hands you in a cup from the freezer behind the counter. Pizza took a good while to come out and was somewhat tasteless. Mall pizza would have had more flavor. We were really looking forward to some gelato, but we opted to take our money elsewhere. Bummer.

Okay, let me tell yall about this place. First of all, the owner is super nice and charming. We were totally prepared to settle for unsweetened tea, and this dude actually got some boiling water, sugar, and tea bags to make us personal sweet tea. Second, the pizza is fresh made to order. Most of the ingredients are literally grown in the garden behind the building; you cant get any more fresh than that. The mozzarella. Oh god the mozzarella. And the crust? Mmmmmmmmmm. Third, the cheesecake. The package says home made. I dont really care if it is or not. But guys, get the cheesecake. Normal cheesecake is good, because sugar. But this cheesecake? It was a shock. The kind of surprise that makes you close your eyes, involuntarily say mmmmm, and chew for five times longer than necessary to savor it. This cheesecake causes problems in my marriage, because neither of us want to share. Go there.

Loved the little coffee shop; however, I ordered a Divino Melt and a Pellegrino, expecting this great sandwich. I should have ordered pizza. The Sandwich contained one very thin slice of salami, half a sundried tomato, a smidge of mozzarella and basil. The fillings didnt even fill the bread from end to end I was quite surprised due to the cost of $9.95. More bread than anything, however the flavor was good. When I mentioned it and complained, to the cashier (I had to buy another bottle of water to wash the dry bread down) the girl looked at me like she couldnt speak. Didnt call the manager, didnt apologize, didnt offer a scoop of gelato. My friend had two slices of pizza (Margherita and a cappuccino) Our total ticket was $29.00 for lunch, I treated. I will go back, but order the Pizza instead. The salads looked fresh and I regretted not getting one, Im still hungry...... :-(

I was lied about the water, I was told there is no free water cups! But on the other side of the corner they had free water! So I bought bottles of water because of what I was told. I was informed they had no 7 pizzas ok fine, I ordered a 12. Then get the pizza there is little to no sauce so I asked for some extra sauce I was charged $5 for it. Then I ask for a cannolli but I was then told they were put, however they were out of the Creme for the middle of it. How hard is it for your workers to make a 7 pizza dough and some Creme for a cannoli obviously pretty hard when the girl sits on her phone at work and only one other worker is here. Save yourself sometime because who know what they will be out of next.

Went on a Sat. It was a nice atmosphere. The pizza was not bad it was okay. We ordered The Supreme meat pizza that my husband had bragged on saying the meatballs made the pizza taste good. I beg to differ it was okay. The meatballs taste like store brought frozen meatballs placed on the pizza. My husband had eaten there with his coworkers and he said that wasnt the original meatballs that they had on the pizza when he went for lunch. Also a man had come in and wanted to order a single slice of pizza, but was told they werent selling any that day. Then why advertise on the site that single slices are a choice if your not going to honor in making it when a request is made.

Unfortunately, I wanted to love this place because of the service and the owners. The gelato looks amazing but I was so turned off by their incredibly disappointing pizza that I left. The slice of pizza is almost four dollars for cheese and it was an overproofed unsalted dough cooked at a low temp without any cornmeal underneath. The pizza was limp, the sauce was under used, and had no flavor. It felt like they were looking to expand their successful gelato business and totally under estimated the difficulty of cooking. Im truly sorry to write this, but I just spent 20 dollars on three slices and it was worse than a hospital. Please avoid their pizza, get gelato!

Im baffled by the people who liked the pizza here, as I found it to be one step above a frozen pizza from 7 Eleven. Pale, unsalted cardboard-like crust with a texture more like pita bread. The bad texture stood out even more because of the blandness of ingredients on top (a margarita is supposed to be a celebration of a few simple ingredients, but those ingredients need to be good quality for it to have any flavor, and these were not). Spaghetti was slightly more palatable, if not great. The gelato was good, and I would just stick with that and not bother with the rest. I wanted to like this place, as its cute and locals seem to like the owner, but I just couldnt.

Employee lied about there being water available. Ended up charging us $5 for water. Pizza was way too dry. Wouldnt bring us more sauce. Another $5 charge. "Ran out of cannolis." Which was ridiculous bc they had tons of shells with all the baked goods. They just need to get off their phones and make cannoli filling. They also said they ran out of 7" pizzas... Make more dough. They were also out of mozzarella sticks. I mean come on. It would be 0 stars but Im giving 1 star bc their gelato was ok. THIS IS A GELATO PLACE! DO NOT GO FOR PIZZA!!

I was visiting San Antonio today, and it was humid and hot. I saw a sign for cold drinks, which helped me find this hidden place. At first I just had the cold and refreshing raspberry lemonade, but once I saw the gelato and the owner let me sample all of them, I had to get a cup. The strawberry and basil gelato is to die for!!! I really recommend it, then we smelt the pizza and we had to try it!!! What a pleasant surprise, it was fresh and delicious. I will stop at this hidden treasure everytime I visit SA. I felt like I was in Italy=]
