I am new to McKinney, and visited Academy Sports for the first time yesterday. It seemed like a local shop, and I didnt expect much (compared to a Gander Mountain, etc). However, I was delighted, once inside to find that it is a large, very well stocked store, with excellent departments covering all sorts of outdoor activities ranging from camping to fishing to golf to grilling. Several good lines of outdoor and sport-specific clothing are available and prices are very competitive. The only exception to the otherwise high quality of service was found in the young man manning the gun counter. As I checked out the impressive collection of long guns and pistols, I noticed that a good number of the single action automatic pistols were displayed with the hammers cocked. (I am a retired Marine Corps officer and have worked in firearms sales as well; I know guns, and I am also aware of at least one instance where a displayed firearm was found to be loaded). I politely asked the young salesman if he was aware that so many hammers were cocked, pointing out that it was bad for the springs. He almost did not respond, then commented that his uncle is a gunsmith and that he would not agree that the practice was not ok. At that point I just left to go shop the rest of the store. However, I wanted to report that, in my opinion, the store yesterday had an uninformed, cavalier salesman manning the firearms counter, and the display, consequently, at least looked a bit unsafe, might have been unsafe, and conveyed the impression that the gun sales staff really didnt have any focused concern about the quality of the product they sell, or any sense of responsiveness to customer concerns. Other than that, I highly recommend the store to anyone with interests in almost any outside recreational activities. I will go back often.

This store is good for everything but Hockey equipment and gear you will not find anything here was disappointed when I asked someone if there is any hockey stuff here and the guy gave me the weirdest look as if hockey never existed but of course they have fishing and camping equipment before they have anything hockey not even 1 real ice hockey stick or puck

Jordan in Guns/ Fishing was great, very nice guy that spooled my penn fathom and penn squall for me. He had tremendous knowledge in fishing and spooling techniques and even taught me a thing or two! 10/10 would come back just for Jordan. Chris at the checkout counter was great too and helped me get the best deal on all my items, thanks again Academy!

Store is much better now than before. Layout is logical and easy to find what youre looking for compared to before the recent reset. They have a wide variety of cheap mass market merchandise. Their cycling section is better but still full of stuff to cheap to be really useful. Their shoe selection is great for athletic shoes and work boots.

This is my second bad experience in a row with academy. I used to love this place, but the customer service these days is nonexistant. I went looking for shoes. The styles I liked were poorly stocked, and when we asked 2 employees for assistance, neither displayed any interest in helping us at all. I wont be back.

Would be 5 stars, but was not treated with respect when I had questions about a handgun. The guy wouldnt answer my questions and told me to look it up online. I ended up going to cabelas and getting what I needed. Other than that I shop here for shoes and clothing.

I came in to buy some All Stars and a tumbler and the woman with the shoulder length loosely curled hair walked pass me twice and asked the woman who just walked up if she needed help. I put the tumbler down and walked out. I found a tumbler on Amazon.

Pretty decent prices on the items they have. People at the registers are always nice. Only problem is finding someone on the sales floor. When they are around they are helpful, but its a hit or miss sometimes. Could be shift change or lunch time.

I found the golf shoes I wanted at the online store, then called ahead to see if they had my size. They did, pulled them to hold and I stopped by and picked them up on the way to my tournament! Thanks for helping to make it a great day!
