I really hope that I can protect other people. I worked at this place and it was a terrible experience. The general manager, Steve is a bully to the female employees in particular. Burton condones this behavior and does not care. Burton made excuses and allows this behavior to go on even after being notified, in detail. The day after I was hired, every single female that worked there warned me about Steve and his lack of patience, respect and stability. Steve is very condescending and does not hesitate to hurt someones feelings. Employee or customer. He does not train his employees, they have to figure it out on their own. Then he talks to you like youre stupid because you dont know what youre doing when in fact he is the one that is supposed to be training. He doesnt seem to understand what a general manager actually does. Managing people is not something he should be doing. When I contacted Burton after I quit, he was very nonchalant and said that Steve does not have patience. He blew me off in a very unprofessional manner. I previously worked as an in-home dog trainer for over five years and I dealt with some difficult people to say the least. Some where almost impossible to deal with. It was very hard work but I never had a problem helping individuals, communicating with them and teaching them. Burton was aware of my previous work experience and when I told him what Steve had been doing he turned it around on me and said that, "Its not as easy working for people instead of dogs." Burton claims to be very educated when it comes to dogs and dog training. If he was as educated as he claims to be, he would be aware that dog training is more a training of people instead of dogs. Most of my time was spent specifically working with people. I guess it was easier to just blame it on me, the new employee. Steve made me feel very uncomfortable and said insulting things to me in front of customers. I had customers tell me that it was OK and ask me if he was always like that. I had customers comforting me. I witnessed Steve insulting other employees that were female in front of customers and those customers were comforting those women as well. Burton is aware of all of this but chooses to not do anything or reassure me that he would look into it. It is so disturbing and ridiculous that a general manager would treat females in such a fashion and not only get away with that but get paid to do it. That speaks volumes about Burton himself as a store owner and as a human being. I have never experienced such a harsh and volatile work environment. The other females in the store walk around on eggshells and put on a smiling face. I lost count of how many comments were made to me, in private, regarding the negative impact that Steve has on the employees and the customers. I did my part and reported the behavior to Burton. It is extremely disappointing that the employees are treated so poorly for such hard work. When we grow up we are told that bullying is wrong and that you should always tell someone if you youre being treated badly or harassed or you are seeing other people being treated badly. Burton does not have empathy in this regard and would prefer his employees to keep their mouth shut while Steve walks all over them. It appears that the other female employees are too afraid to speak up. Im not afraid of Steve or Burton so I will speak up. Nobody deserves to be treated the way that Steve and Burton treat people.

I completely agree with Lyndie K. I was an employee at Burtons Total Pet for about 7 or 8 months and I quit working there a little over a year ago. I have never been treated so horribly at a job before in my life. The manager and the owners talked down to you, as if you were the dumbest person on the planet. They would make rude comments to us in front of customers, especially the female employees. We were never actually taught how to complete our tasks for the day, we basically just had to figure everything out on our own. And if we made a mistake of any kind, we were harshly scolded for it for days on end. A couple months after I began working there, my father passed away suddenly and I was scheduled to work that morning but I called the manager and the owners to let them know I wouldnt be able to come in for a few days. If you called off, the manager would have to cover until the next employee was scheduled to come in. And of course, they werent very happy that I wasnt able to come in. The manager called me the morning of my fathers funeral and asked if Id be able to come in that day because another employee apparently called off and he "desperately" needed someone to come in. I told him what was going on and of course, I was scolded for not being able to come in. I came back the following Monday and was immediately brought into the managers office and was repeatedly told how I inconvenienced them for an entire week and that I was walking on thin ice with them. I just kind of brushed it off but I went home that night and told my mother about it and she became so furious with them. I had a few days off and I really thought about it and I called the next morning and told the manager that I wasnt going to be working for them any longer and that I was tired of being treated the way I was. The manager then sighed quite dramatically into the phone and just told me to turn my work shirt in as soon as possible and then he proceeded to hang up on me. I have never been treated so terribly at a job before, the manager and the owners treated the female employees as if we were the dumbest people on the planet. I will not return to this store ever again and I would definitely try and convince anyone who tries to apply to work there to change their minds.

I dont know who the guy that checked us out was, but felt it was necessary to give us his opinion on our pit bull, and how he feels about the breed. Shes probably the calmest sweetest dog Ive ever met, and when asking the girl stocking about the price of the lion head bunnies, she first told us she wouldnt sell us one because of our pit, and gave us a lecture about how our dog has a prey driven mind, and might kill, scare or attack the bunny, not knowing shes been around rabbits, ducks I had to hand raise, and two ferrets, never even barked at any of them. Ill buy my dog food elsewhere now....

Had 2 lionhead bunnies for sale for a month or more. They told me they werent for sale two times i was in there and the 3rd time the girl said they would be for sale in the next week and she could take my name and number to call me when they were and i was the only person to put my name in. Just over a week later and no call so i go in and they have sold both of them. What kind of place does this? I wont ever buy anything from here again if thats how they treat their customers
