I moved in the Huntingdon Valley area 16 months ago. I purchased an older home (80 years old ) that required much work starting from the plumbing to the hardware around the house. I wanted to re-store the house to somewhat near original, but after going on line and traveling all over the tr-state area, I stumbled on now my favorite place. I purchased product starting to renovate my home from a place in chestnut hill but I will not mention their name. They were OK, but I was not thrilled with them. My third contractor (after firing my first 2) told me to try a place called S&H Hardware in northeast Philadelphia. I do not understand why these guys have several negative reviews but I have been quite happy from the beginning using these guys. If they dont have what I need, they special order it. I asked the sales person every time I order product what the lead time is. I have ordered over 16 months probably $15,000.00 worth of hardware and plumbing and some items have taken as long as 8 weeks, and some items I have received in as soon as a week. As long as you question these guys what the lead times are when you order, you should not have any problems. There were times when I needed product real fast so I settled for hardware that I could live with because the product I wanted had to be made and the lead time was three to four weeks. Sometimes I could wait this long, but other times I could not. Some of the reviews they talk about grumpy sales people, but I have visited this store over 50 times in the last 11/2 years and am always treated well. I guess you cant satisfy everyone, but some of their customers while shopping in their store seem to be real jerks. These guys work real hard at their job and I would not trade places. Talk about being competitive, I always price shop these guys and sometimes they are a few pennies more than other places, and sometimes they are less, but the most important issue here is their knowledge. Their knowledge is worth part of the price and their advice is usually amazing. All I can say to those of you with the negative reviews, is I am one of the toughest customers out there, as I never settle, and the sales people at S&H have been great. To hell with those who dont like shopping there, it will just give them more time to spend with myself and all of my friends. By the way, I have sent at least 20 of my friends and family to this place, and I have never heard anything bad from anyone I have sent in there. Thank you guys, for all the good stuff you have done for me, and thanks for putting up with my wife. I know she can be very difficult. These guys deserve the full 5 stars

AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE IF YOU NEED TO SPECIAL ORDER ANYTHING!!!!! I special ordered 4 French-style chest of drawer pulls from these guys in Mid February 2008....It is now August 19, 2008 and no pulls. They were promised in 10-day to 2-weeks. I called TWO MONTHS LATER after no call from them. They claimed the pulls were back-ordered saying they would call me when they came in in a couple of weeks. When I CALLED THEM AGAIN TWO MONTHS LATER (after no call from them) they claimed that they got the pulls in and they were at their warehouse and supposedly had called me to let me know they had come in...a plain and patent lie as my cell is on my hiop constantly and I go NO MESSAGES from them. They then said that unfortunately, the pulls were the wrong post size and would have to send them back to get the right ones. ????? I AGAIN NEVER HEARD FROM THEM. I then called at the beginning of August and they gave another excuse about shipping. This past Saturday, I physically went into the store and they shepparded me to a guy named Jim who is their showroom manager. He said he would track things down and call me on Monday morning, August 18th. Today, August 19th I finally hear from him and he tells me that I would have to wait an ADDITIONAL TWO AND A HALF MONTHS to get the pulls. The ONLY remedy he had was to give me pulls that I did NOT see or want as replacements or give me a store credit..for items in their store that were OVERPRICED. I say this because I attempted to get a sander there on Saturday in exchange for my $35.00 deposit, and their prices were at least $10.00 higher than at Home Depot and $20.00 higher than Walmart. Now I am stuck with this store credit for a place that I have NO INTENTION of ever shopping in again...and the kicker is Jim was haughty and arrogant with his responses to my queries and my expressions of displeasure with his "solutions." I told him I had seen bad reviews on the net and he replied that "bloggers can say anything they want." When I asked what would it be if I now went and gave a negative review, and he replied that "this is America and everyone can have an opinion." Well, this is my opinion....This place is a ripoff waiting to happen. I told him to mail me my store credit so I can exchange it with someone who actually might use it there....we will see how long it takes for THAT to reach me. AVOID THEM!

S&H Hardware is the best hardware store and plumbing supply I have been in since I moved here from Chicago. I cannot believe you can still get old fashioned service, fair prices and they have the most knowledgeable salesman. I had an emergency in one of my rental properties, and if it was not for them on a Saturday, my tenants would have been forced to move out due to my heater breaking down. I also purchased two full bathrooms and my kitchen sink, and faucet from them. They are not the most inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. I priced them against Weinstein Supply in willow grove and on a $425.00 faucet they were $6.00 more but the service I received was worth $50.00 more. I have read some of the negative reviews on this page, and it sounds like they must have a disgruntled employee, or customer, due to the fact, I have never experienced any bad service. Every business cannot satisfy everyone and all it takes is a jerk to write in a negative review. I praise these guys, and I am glad there is still a place like I used to go to when I grew up in Chicago. They are a little (alot) cramped for space, but if you can get over that, try them out. It will be one of the most unforgettable experiences you will ever have. They are great. The owner, I think his name is Harold, knows everything. Just dont try to get over on him, it seems like he can be your best friend, but if you try to cross him, watch out. If you want to buy a faucet for $39.00 they have it and if you want to buy a faucet for $2000.00, they have it to. They have helped me out a number of times, its like my home away from home. I give this place five stars. Stop going to home depot, and go to this place. If people dont support the small business, they will not be able to stay in business. We all forget about things like this until someone goes out of business, and then we say, i should have gone there more often. I give these guys five stars. Thanks for being there guys.
