Dropped in here tonight after reading through reviews. I was certainly hesitant to go in - but they have a HUGE selection of work and professional/career shoes. They also have so many sandals and other shoes I really couldnt look at them all! Based on their variety this place deserves a well placed 5 stars. The only reason Im giving 4 stars after my visit is due to the return policy. I had great service - as explained in great detail below. I did not make a purchase, however, based on the policy of return. I was a bit surprised and pleased at how late they stay open (8pm). As I approached the storefront and their big glass windows, I noticed one employee inside and not a single customer at 7pm. I thought that seemed appropriate for the time and lack of customers. Immediately after entering she greeted me and approached in a friendly and helpful manner. I wandered around looking for a supportive leather black pair of ballet flats for work as I stand for hours at a time. I found a pair to try (Cobb Hill by New Balance) and asked for 2 sizes, which she promptly brought out. She left the shoes and did not pressure at all. Upon noting further, their appeared to be a manufacture defect in the finish of the leather (a tear almost). She then reviewed some other shoes and made good suggestions for my needs. After my hesitation and their lack of a particular size in an Alegria she pointed out the SALE room. It is large and I have never even noticed it before today. Marie (I think she said her name was) explained that she is from the Albany office and was just here temporarily. She was awesome and attentive. There were then 2 other employees that emerged close to their closing time and appeared at the registers talking and laughing. They were careless of anyone else in the store. Marie encouraged me to wait if I wasnt sure and promptly explained their return policy when I inquired. She even said that she had put the pair of Cobb Hill shoes on the managers desk as they need to be returned. Honestly, I would have purchased the shoes right there if the return policy was not so strict. She nearly whispered to me "if you might return these, absolutely do not wear these out of the house or for more than just trying on with clothes." She also further explained that "only an in-store credit would be possible within 30 days if I wanted to return them in the box in original purchase condition". Great service and very attentive. I wish she was a regular. I may return to buy but I am skeptical. Thanks awesome Marie? from Albany. You were super helpful.

They seem to have a lot of shoes, however, the 3 times I have been in this store, once I finally get someone to even notice me, the salesperson points to one rack of shoes and as they are walking away from me, they tell me to come and find them if I have any questions. Really! The shoes are not cheap, and while I may not want someone hovering over me, I would like a little customer service and without having to hunt them down, especially as each time I have noticed that the employees were in a group just chatting, and not even bothering to check in with the customers. Im not sure I will come back for a 4th try. Its not customer oriented. Very unhappy especially as I have been told the store carries brands that might work for me. Someone must know what customer service is in Salem.

The staff and owner/manager here have absolutely no customer service skills. They are rude and lazy. If you have any sort of problem after purchasing shoes from them, they make you jump through hoops to get any sort of resolution. I bought a pair of $250 work boots for my husband and we realized the shoe was defective. They refused a refund or exchange. They are very strict about their return policy, it states on the receipt. However, they will not take responsibility when selling a defective product! My husband went in with the defected boot and spoke with the owner and he argued with him that there was anything wrong with the boot. We will never purchase from here again and I warn anyone to please take your business somewhere else.

The staff here are amazing. They are very knowledgeable, very friendly, and have an excellent customer service ethic. 95% of the time theyll help you find the pair of shoes your feet were hoping for. However, then youll look at the price, and then youll check Amazon, and youll see a 20% difference not in favor of Footware Express. This place is awesome for finding the right shoe and figuring out the right size. But I cannot buy shoes here because they arent willing (or apparently able) to price match or at least cut the difference down to say 5-10%. Price is the only reason this place gets 3 stars; otherwise, theyd get a full 5.

Was in Salem and had some time to kill and needed a new pair of shoes. First off the customer service sucked! I had picked up several pairs to try on yet the very pregnant sales woman could have cared less when I asked to try them on. Then I waited, sitting ... for more than 10 minutes...and then someone asked me if I needed help. When the girl brought me the shoes, she was not friendly ,nor was she helpful. I tried 3 pairs on and bought one pair because they fit! If the sales woman had been more attentive and helpful in the sizing, I would have gotten another.

Came here to buy shoes for my wife and they made it sound like she had at least a few days to try out the shoes and if she did not like them she could bring them back for another pair, that was not the case, so I just took aa $140 bath for shoes that kill my wifes feet, unless you have a few grand to buy shoes until you find one that works dont come here!

My rating unpacked: they have a creepy sales staff, the service is slow and the layout of the store looks like a slummy thrift store. Just say no.
