Im a longtime Fred Meyer shopper, so Im one of those people who only goes to Safeway when Im out of something and Fred Meyers is closed. That has changed since moving to Albany. The first time I came here it was for Starbucks because the Starbucks outside of Fred Meyer in Albany seemed to always have grumpy baristas and that Fred Meyer is constantly plagued with drunks and panhandlers (I even had one come up to me while I was shopping inside). The baristas at the Safeway Starbucks are always very nice, in fact its the nicest Starbucks I think I have ever been to. Since I am often there for coffee, I started checking out the store and was pleasantly surprised. I had always assumed that Freddies was cheaper. In many cases Safeway is cheaper or comparable. They also offer more items in the grocery department. A few of my favorite things, things I cant even get at Freddies or are too expensive at Freddies--marinated meats in the meat department (Greek chicken breasts for $3.99/lb, marinated beef kabobs for $5.99/lb, nitrate-free pepper bacon for $5.99/lb), Fuze Slenderize with only 3 g of carbs and no added sugar for $1.25/ea, packaged salads for two $3.99/ea and in wonderful combinations like chicken Caesar and Asian with mandarin oranges, a pound of organic strawberries for $3.99/ea, etc. At first I felt like I was missing something because my Freddie rewards were so much smaller (I hardly ever go there anymore), but since I use Chevron gas and use my Safeway card points, I usually save 30 cents off each gallon (the highest was 80 cents off each gallon). Thats a nice perk. Since my family eats Paleo, which means a lot of meat, Ive saved about $20 a week on my grocery bill by shopping Safeway meats and getting the marinated ones in the back. They taste so much better than the meat from Freddies and I was paying $6.99/lb to $8.99/lb there. And I still pickup my coffee from the nice ladies at the in-store Starbucks.

Went through a line and the cash register was glitching out and had to be restarted, so we were sent over to customer service. Upon which, the lady behind the customer service counter (blonde-ish "speak to your manager hair") flat out told us to go back through a line -- after all had become extremely busy. Then I ask the cashier (Brandi, she was super nice and apologetic,) to speak to the manager on duty. So comes down the operations/personnel manager (the person who schedules hours in most places) who has absolutely no customer service skills. "I just had to go through two super busy lines because one line glitched out and the customer service lady sent us through to another." "Alright, what do you need?" "Well, I dont particularly need anything but you just made me spend an extra 30 minutes in Safeway." "Oh, okay. Ill talk to them about it." All she would have to do is be proactive and actually apologetic. But because she wasnt Im writing this review. If its for one or two things then come here but if youre planning on actually doing your weekly shopping here Id stay away.

Im solid with Fred Meyers, but Im not walking around with blinders on, Safeway has awesome deals for their $5 Fridays. My whole family shops @ Freds 95% of the time. I commute to work alot & only buy Shell Supreme (V-Power) fuel for my Cadillac so I buy a $100 giftcard @ Fred Meyers & I get double points, if you plan it right you can go buy one on double rewards day & Ive got $1 off a gallon (35gal. Max) so Ill roll up to Shell & fill my Cadillac (20-21gallon tank) & Ill have the gas jockey hold the gas nozzle while my mom rolls up behind me & I put the rest (15gal.) In her GMC Acadia. Last week I filled both tanks for $55 (she had a 1/4 tank already) Safeway kicks Freddys ASS on Meat sales, & Bakery is waaaayyy dope!!

The Safeway here is always clean. They are hardly ever out of anything. However the prices on some stuff is a bit high. But they more then make up for it with the $5 Friday deals. The associates are not really friendly and you hardly ever see one smile or look very happy. We asked for assistance at the bottle return machine and no one ever came out. I think if the associates presented a more pleasant atmosphere then business would be even greater for this store because it would be more enjoyable. The busiest time of day seems to be in the evening during rush hour. During the day you can quickly get in and get out. The biggest down fall of this place is the attitudes of the associates.

Best place to shop in Albany. Prices are higher than most but the quality of their products are what keeps me coming back. Produce is always clean and fresh, meat department has a good variety of great quality meat, the bakery has the best quality product in TOWN, the deli is always CLEAN, the customer service is always genuine. I dont feel awkward or uncomfortable when they talk to me. I can sense when its a this is my job so I have to say hi compared to the hi when there are genuinely being nice. The girl at Starbucks was so sweet and helpful. So many great things about this store. Thank you for being the best :)

Whoever is the manager of the store in Albany needs to go thru training in customer service. I worked at Hewlett-Packard for yeats and your manager would have been fired w/i a month. Two checkers were working? And lines were backed up 4 to 5 deep. No express line mind you, and although several people were vocal the checkers on duty were completely inept at the request of people wanting extra help. This was at 9:00p on Friday. If I werent disabled I would have dumped my hand basket in the isle and walked to go to another store. Im praying Win-Co takes a huge bite out of your ass. Pathetic! The Albany Safeway has removed ALL of their self check kiosks. Lines are ridiculously long no matter what time of day you come in. If you were planning on stopping by after work to pick up that one thing you forgot, you are better served going to Target or Fred Meyer, youll get in and out faster. All those signs about well open up a new lane if there are more than three people in line you see in other Safeways are nowhere to be found here. Be prepared to wait. Its not worth the time and frustration to come here and twiddle my thumbs behind seven other poor souls who only needed a loaf of bread or carton of juice.

I requested of the florist that she make me a bouquet. She was very happy to but had to ask her supervisor. Who rudely informed me that she could not let me pick and pull from her boring bouquets. When I inquired if they would make me a bouquet to order I was again rudely informed that I could not pick and pull from the boring bouquets. Regarding the flower department: Staff: 5 stars. Management: would be fired if I was in charge. Given the choice between make money on perishables v. throw them away. The correct answer should be, make money. Especially if a customer wants to give money.

This place is clean, slow moving, although has a wide selection of most items. I think the in town Fred Meyer is better, however this place is a step up from the bag your own stuff Mega Foods IF what you are looking for is having someone make stilted small talk with you and offer you a buying rewards game like "Monopoly". I personally can do without the extras. Oh that reminds me, dont waste your time on their Sushi. Make yours at home only half way paying attention to the directions and youll be happier with the end result. I also dont like their bakery items.
