I looked at a Grey 2012 Chevy Malibu with 24k miles on it. The car was stickered for $13999 but the sales person told me she would get me 12998 for it. I took it for a drive and took it to one of my familys nearby fleet garages and the fleet manager there (aka my sister) took time out of her busy day to check it out for me. She told me it was a good car so I returned and bought the car -the only car I looked at there- that day. On the next day they called me and advised me that they had sent me home with the wrong grey malibu. Then they said that I was going to have to bring back the car I had or give them another $1000. When I bought the car they had told me they were selling me a 2012 Chevy Malibu with 24k miles but they put me into a sales contract for a 2011 Chevy Malibu with 33k miles on it. I went right then to see the car they were saying was the one I had actually bought but when I got there the sales manager could not show us the car, then we found out the car they put in my contract was black. I only looked at the grey 2012 malibu, I never saw the car they put in my sales contract and I am not aware whether it was ever even there to begin with. My sister confronted him about the car not being grey like he had told us was what had caused the original problem and the car not being available for us to see. The sales manager became very loud and very abusive toward my sister and started belittling her to me. The sales manager told us the sales person I dealt with would be in "tomorow" and that he would find out what happened. I went home and submitted an online complaint to the Ohio Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau and then talked to my neighbor that told me they had done the exact same thing to her. I called my uncle and his advice: take the car back and get my money back. I decided I didnt want to do business with CarMax so the next morning I returned to Carmax and asked for my sales person but was advised that she was off that day too. I did not want to deal with the sales manager alone and took my fiancee and my sister with me. My sister noted to me that the sales manager had told us my sales person would be there and then they changed their story and said she was just running late. At this point I definitely did not want to do business with them anymore. We asked for the sales manager and were left in the waiting area for around an hour at which time he came out and started making demands. I felt very intimidated and teared up, my fiancee put himself between myself and this bully and my sister stopped the sales manager mid-tirade and told him I was there to return the car and then he became hostile towards her and my fiancee and then tried to separate me from them. My sister stopped him then too and he continued to shout and verbally abuse us. After he finally relented and I was able to return the car we went to the cashiers office to get my down payment back. They told me they could not give me back my down payment and would mail me a check. I did not want to leave without my money because at this point I did not trust them at all. So I told them I wanted my money back and they told me I would have to get it approved by my bank and it was the banks fault I couldnt get my money back. I called my bank and advised them what was happening and they transferred me to the fraud department and recovered my funds for me. I had hoped driving off of that lot would be the end of it however later that afternoon the phone calls started. At first they were saying I had left personal property in the car demanded I return to get it, by Wednesday the calls had devolved to threats that "it would be in my best interest to come back and take the deal because I had dared to complain to the BBB and the Attorney Generals office." I am absolutely appalled at the bullying tactics and veiled threats that they have leveled against myself and my family. We will never ever again even consider doing business with them in any shape or form ever again, and I hope you dont either.

I had a good experience purchasing a used car from Carmax. The best situation for using Carmax is when you have a particular hard-to-find used vehicle in mind. If obtaining the lowest price possible and getting a bargain are your main objectives, then you might want to look elsewhere. They have locations nationwide and can ship vehicles to your local store for a reasonable price. I was looking for a certain model and exterior/interior color combination with navigation package and could not find it locally. I was able to search for this on Carmaxs website, review 30-40 photos of the car, and then pay $400 to have it shipped to a Carmax location near my house. My experience in the store was positive with patient and polite salespeople who took me on a nice long test drive. They would not, however, allow me to take the car to an independent mechanic prior to purchasing it. They have a 5-day return policy and said that I could purchase the car, get it checked out by a mechanic, and then return it if there were any problems. Not the most convenient solution, but some protection from buying a lemon. After purchasing the car and having it checked by the mechanic, there were no major issues that would cause me to automatically return it (frame or flood damage). The mechanic did find that the exhaust system had been damaged by backing over a low object, though. This ended up being a quick mainly cosmetic fix, but is still evidence that even cars purchased at Carmax need to be inspected by an independent mechanic. The 125-point inspection that they brag about is not sufficient. In the end, I am happy with the car and feel that I paid at Kelly Blue Book value. If the combination I was looking for was available at a local used car dealer, I feel like I probably could have paid around $500-$1000 less with some negotiating. Just remember to get any car purchased at Carmax inspected by an independent mechanic and be prepared to return it if there is serious damage or an exorbitant repair bill that is needed.

I will provide 2 stars because the salesperson was ok, and the play place they had was really good for someone with a 16 month old. The vehicle was also nice. That is where the positives end, and it is because of this that I did not buy here. The price was very close to where I needed to be with on a monthly payment. My wife and I have EXCELLENT credit. When they ran our info, they did not offer anything over 60 months, at a much higher rate than I deserved. When I asked what they could do to help with the price, they said they have a wonderful thing called "no hassle" pricing. To me, that is a fancy way of saying "pay what we tell you, we should not need to earn your business". Only one side wins here, and it is not the buyer. When the salesperson asked the manager to see what they could do on the financing, the manager said he would not even try, what you see, is what you get. The next day, I found the same year, make , model and price (different color) at Chesrown in Delaware. I contacted my bank ahead of time and got a loan approved with the rate and time I deserved with my credit. I told Chesrown about my Car Max experience. They gave me $400 more trade in, and decided to try to beat the interest rate I came in with (which they somehow did! ). They really wanted to earn my business. To top this off, they offered to repair all dents and scratches on the car, and lifetime oil changes.... and I didnt even ask for any of that. No worries Car Max, in 3 years when I need to get 2 more vehicles for my teenage daughters, you will not have to worry about "hassling" with me, instead I will be at Chesrown, where they earned a customer.
