Gabriels supermarket in Scotia is within walking distance from my apartment, it is convenient for me, if there is something I need to get, I can get it there. From my apartment in Scotia to Gabriels, it takes me about 10 minutes. This supermarket is smaller then Price Chopper or Hannaford. It has a good selection. When I was a child growing up in the early 1970s, I remembered around that time that there were mostly supermarkets that were about the size of this Gabriels, like P & C, A & P, Grand Union, Loblaws, and Central Markets (later became Price Chopper). To me, this Gabriels Supermarket in Scotia reminisces that. Those much larger supermarkets like Hannaford and Price Chopper that has a food court, a florist, a sushi section, a deli, a bakery, and a pharmacy today didnt even exist around that time. Gabriels doesnt have that setting. It only has a deli, bakery and the meat department, and its setting inside is almost very similar to a typical late 60s, or a early 70s supermarket, which is like a smaller equivalent of Price Chopper and Hannaford of today (or smaller version of it), except with todays technology, e.g., its cash registers, the new energy-saving fluorescent LED lights on the ceiling above the aisles in the store, windows in the front of the store, and siding installed on the side of the store, next to its entrance and its parking lot, to revitalize the village of Scotia. This Gabriels in Scotia made me thought of that. Unlike Price Chopper and Hannaford which are open 24 hours, Gabriels Supermarket does not stay open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it opens at 8 am, and closes at 9 pm Monday through Friday; opens at 8 am and closes at 7 pm on Saturdays; and opens at 8 am and closes at 6 pm on Sundays. These old supermarkets I have mentioned above years ago may had those similar hours very similar to Gabriels of today, and back in those days, the 24-hour supermarkets such as Central Markets (now Price Chopper) did not exist. IGA is a name of a company who owns Gabriels supermarkets. Its logo is seen here below.

Terrible service. Extremely dirty behind closed doors.. the hot foods that the deli puts out are always old and dried out.. Ive encountered mold aswell in the chicken parm hot dinner. Im pretty sure they are using the same ones repeatedly and just changing the stickers.. Ive gotten sick from the delis own ham salad. Ive learned my lesson now, but I gave the store its fair share of chances. The store does very well because of its location. I dont understand why they cut so many corners food and safety wise. Somebody is going to get seriously Ill one day. Ive even seen employees drop unwrapped deli meets onto the floor and pick it right back up.. disgusting.

You cant beat the Wednesday and Friday/Saturday sales. They have the freshest meat and Fantastic store roasted deli meats. They also have a great selection of prepared foods in the deli. Some things are expensive, but if you stick to whats on sale youre unlikely to find better prices anywhere else. I stop here a few times a week.

The prices are a bit higher than other larger supermarkets but you get convience, good service, and in some cases higher quality products. The latter is especially the case with their deli. Gabriels has excellent meat including cold cuts, steaks, chops, etc.

I have shopped at Gabriels for about 40 years. While it may not be where to go for your weekly groceries, you should definitely go here for the butcher shop and deli. Great meats and great prices, and, awesome prepared (on site ) entrees.
