One of the few independent bookstores in NYC. Greenlight Bookstore has a nice section of local New York interest. If I want to take a walk, they have New York guide books dedicated to walks off the beaten path. If I feel like gazing at street art and dont feel like visiting the gritty parts, they have huge heavy picture books immortalizing just that. And if Im feeling all alone and like a stranger to NYC, Im reminded that at one time all the famous New Yorkers were new to the city as well. I saw a book of New York memoirs. Greenlight Bookstore also hosts many author/editor publicity events. This is just like Barnes but on a more intimate scale.

Greenlight Bookstore just turned two years old and I think it can be virtually agreed upon by many in the Fort Greene area, that they are going to be sticking around much longer. This is most due in part to the wide selection of both best sellers and local authors (who do many readings, signings, and events I may add), large childrens section, and a friendly, knowledgeable staff. Not to mention the little coffee annex located next door. I would much rather spend my hard earned dough at a place like this than some big box company. "Real" books (not e-readers) for life!

As far as I know this is the closest bookstore to Pratt Institute, but somebody let me know if Im wrong! They have to locations now, one here and one down in Propect-Lefferts. This is the older one, they have the general bookstore selection (fiction, non-fic, kids, cookbooks, comics, and art books) but also a nice New York and Brooklyn area towards the front, a little independent press table/area, and the staff is very knowledgeable!

This upstart bookstore started in 2009 through a grant from the Brooklyn Public Library and the hard work of co-owners Jessica Stockton Bagnulo and Rebecca Fitting. It has since become the literary center of Fort Greene and the surrounding community with an excellent reading series featuring local authors. The staff is welcoming and friendly and always ready to offer up recommendations of good books to read.

So you live in the neighborhood, walk by the store, maybe even peaked in the window and havent been inside yet? What the HECK are ya waiting for?! Its a cute shop, bigger than expected, with great employees. If they dont have a book youre looking for, theyll order it for you. Book signings, readings, awesome events happening too. Shop local. Youll love it.

Im sorry Greenlight Bookstore! I love to support local stores, but I cant in good conscience give Greenlight a good review. Every time I call or drop in to ask for a specific title they literally never have the book. The reply is always "..but we can order it for you!". Thank you for the customer service, but so can I.

Books , books and more books. You can stay in there for hours looking through the large selection without being bothered. If thats your thing of course. I like the selection and placement of the genres. Helps you find more books you may be interested in.
