Each individual artist at this shop probably sees dozens of people every week. One would think that their work would become routine to them, that it would seem ordinary after all the countless hours they spend in a chair with ink and needles. And in fact, it might have; I dont know. What I do know is that good art does not come out of apathy. There may be a few exceptions to this principle, but in general Ive found that it holds true the vast majority of the time. I walked into East River Tattoo after travelling hundreds of miles from my home state of Virginia to get my first tattoo. I figured that for my first one, it needed to be done right. I chose them based on their reputation and style. I have no talent for the visual arts so had very little to offer in terms of reference material; I was relying primarily on the artist--Rob, in my case--to bring to life an idea I had been considering for the past two years, an idea that held deep meaning to me but was beyond my ability to really articulate well (again, I have absolutely no talent in the visual arts). Rob took the barest sketch of an idea and made it into a work of art that quite literally left me speechless. He may have thought I hated it; I just kind of stood in the mirror looking at it. It was a routine thing for him; I get that. I was one of many customers he had seen that day. But I will never forget the moment I first saw it. I cant express the feeling of being so intimately connected to a piece of art that will truly be with me for life. These artists are passionate about what they do, and it absolutely comes through in their work. This was my first tattoo but will certainly not be my last with them.

I wont disagree that this place is a very cool tattoo shop. Probably one of the best in the world. However, I walk pass the shop everyday to work. So this time, I went in to ask about getting a quote tattoo I wanted on my neck. Small stuff, I am now starting out. The Asian girl responded very politely and all; but she was like I dont think any tattoo artist here would do a simple quote tattoo for you and we are booked up with bigger jobs followed by -her fake smile and goodbye.. O.o WTF kind of customer service is this, can I atleast talk to an artist to see their vision (position, shape, color, abstract design) to add to the tattoo, I dont mind paying for it. But I was simply dismissed.

East River Tattoo has some of the best tattoo artists in the world for linework and woodcut/lithograph style tattoos. I got a flower done by Sue Jieven who is the nicest, most professional, and talented artist I have ever met. I would absolutely recommend this shop if you like the style of the artists. Take a look at their Facebook for fabulous work. Also, shout out to Willie the awesome dog that lives there.

Great tattoo shop. Super clean and professional parlor. The artist are very talented and each one has a very special style. They also do great traditional tattoos. I have two tattoos by Rob Banks, he has a beautiful hand painted flash collection, a master of traditional tattoos. If you are looking to get a tattoo in NYC this is the place.
