My daughter plays cello in the Civic Youth Orchestra at the DSO and needed a full length, black dress and skirt made for concerts (not something commonly available for young girls). We have a wonderful dressmaker in Birmingham who suggested Haberman Fabrics. I took my daughter who was 15 at the time and was treated so rudely (once we actually found somebody to help us) that we left. I called the dressmaker and asked if she knew of anyone else who would stock the fabric, unfortunatley she did not and I went back to Haberman the following week. I had a different women help me who was as rude as the first. I asked to pull a bolt out and look at it but decided against it and asked to see another. She ROLLED her eyes and slammed the next bolt down without a word. It was perfect and I asked for 3 yards. Still no word. She cut and wrapped it up. Still nothing. I took the package and said "thank you". She replied, "sure" with out looking up. The selection is incredible but who would put up with such rude service? Not me. It wasnt until I had to deal with the owner, JoAnn Haberman, who placed an order with my company that I realized that it all begins with her. She has been unreasonable and rude to the point of our refusing her last order. Her Mother should be ashamed of the rude, entitled women she has raised. She spreads her lousy attitude to her employees and likely anybody else that has to spend time in her presence.

I have visited this store twice in order to purchase material for the wedding gown my sister is constructing for me. The first time I went, the trip was okay--nothing special about it. The second time however, was extremely frustrating. I arrived at about 7:45p, with ample time to make my selection before closing time at 10p. I waited 10 minutes for help (after asking for it when I first walked in) and even after an employee finally came around, she didnt meet my needs. I gave her the item description, bolt numbers, and cost per yard, but she was unable to find the silk material I needed. At first it was fine (inventories can become depleted, I understand that) but the fact that the employee was rushing and not giving due diligence made me want to look myself--so I did. Twenty minutes after the initial interaction, I found the material I was looking for--additionally, the employee did not assist me in choosing another (comparable) product after failing to locate my selection. I strongly support buying local, but I will not be going back there. You would think that when a customer is looking to buy five yards of a material that had a list price of $70/yard, youd at least get their time of day.

I have been shopping at Habermans since I moved to Royal Oak a few years ago. Each time I leave I swear Im never going back again; and then, given the complete lack of fashion fabric options in the metro-Detroit area, Im forced to return. I have to admit, I dont understand the other reviews of women raving over the selection. They have limited selection of everything. Its true, they do have a little bit of EVERYTHING- but just a few options of each. Clearly, theyve cornered the market in the metro area- and they have no qualms about raking you over the coals with overpriced, though outdated, fabrics. Most importantly: WORST SERVICE EVER. Eveerrrr. First- you do not know EVERYTHING there is to know about sewing and fabric. The women who work at Habermans are rude, unhelpful, and perpetually exasperated. I know- I know, Im sorry I asked you to cut my fabric. Its a rough life you lead. I feel very strongly about supporting my local business but I will resort to shopping for my fabrics online from now on as I also feel very strongly about not being treated like an inconvenience.

First and last experience was horrible. I spent 15 minutes in the store and there were an abundance of employees. I was not greeted or welcomed upon entry. The cashier saw me pass by and did not greet me. However, I noted that two women coming in after me were greeted. I browsed and passed by employees, none of them spoke. I felt it kind of weird because you would think that at least one employee would have said hello or greeted me. I was extremely disappointed.I must admit that while the store offers quality fabrics, I will not be spending a dime of my money where I can not even get a "Hello" or "Can I help you?"...You should teach your employees customer service is owed to every customer. Its unfortunate because I felt I was being profiled and discriminated against because I was an African American woman coming from the gym. If this was not the case that is how it came across. Very unfortunate experience, and they lost out on major business as I work for a very successful business in contant need of large amounts of fabrics and textiles.

Ive been a regular customer of Habermans for nearly a decade. Its a legendary fabric store with an inspiring interior and its own educational studio. Its a shop of quality fabrics and many of the customers are professional dressmakers. It takes some time to learn how they operate. The staff arent going to kiss your butt over every little wish you have. I dont think the staff are super-friendly (as pointed out here), but personally I dont need someone to pretend its her calling in life to help me find some polyester. Some of the staff, a few of whom I know personally, are skilled artists with degrees in fashion design and interior decorating. They arent minimum wagers trained to bow and scrape just because you want to buy some acetate. If you want to be babied as you tsk tsk over every fabric decision and have your hand held while deciding on the right hot-pink tulle for your daughters dance costume, then go to JoAnns. Habermans is a REAL fabric store for REAL sewists.

When I went to buy oil cloth for a project, an extremely pleasant and personable young woman began to assist me. Although my entire transaction could not have taken more than 20 minutes twice during that period some barely polite supervisor(?) came up to us to point out to the assistant that some other customer was waiting for service. It was a different person each of the two times that spoke with her and they were condescending and treated her as if she were slacking. I was embarrassed at how they treated her. Presumably either one of these two overseers could have waited on a customer rather than picking on a conscientious worker. The fabric I wanted was there but the weird atmosphere made it an unpleasant experience.

If you want bridal fabric or special garment fabric this would be a great place. If you want home decor fabric -meh. I came for the large selection of these on bolts but that is gone. Not worth a drive for me. Also brick and mortar stores have to offer service to compete with online shopping. When I picked up my order the woman I asked to get my fabric seemed quite put out that I was interrupting her task. And she couldnt find my order so I waited a while. Not that big a deal but I an apology for the wait or a thanks for the order would have added to the "Fun" of driving 45 minutes to a real store.
