When I rode up, the dude was setting out bikes for an "ugly duckling" special. $100 for the ugliest bikes in the shop. He told me which ones were best and why. He was a really nice guy, and we ended up talking for a couple hours. He knows a lot about bikes, and hes obviously not in it for the money. Hes just a classic, independent, grease-monkey. His plan is for his shop to not be intimidating. And it isnt. Theres no army of sales people, no fancy fitting machines, no racks of powerbars and water-backpacks. Just him and his bikes. He doesnt talk to you like hes trying to sell something. And he also doesnt push bike-speak down your throat to the point youre afraid to admit that you dont know whether your shocks are gas compression or mechanical. While I was there I bought a 20-buck reusable helmet, some oil, and a basic pump. While we chatted he examined my bike and tweaked the shifting screws for what ended up being 10 bucks. He explained everything he did as he did it.

I sought out Port City Bikes on the advice of many down-to-earth, bike-loving friends. My initial encounter with the owner was great -- he showed me around his shop, took his time and helped me evaluate fit on a bike. I settled on a model that he said needed a few repairs but he could have it done in about 2 weeks, and I should call him then. Thus began the worst game of phone tag ever. I got him on the phone three times, and each time I had to jog his memory with who I was and what I wanted, and he would tell me to call back in another week. Eventually he stopped picking up and I stopped calling. I couldnt figure out why this guy would continually ignore me after I had left him all my contact info and agreed to pay him $200 for a used bike. Completely bizarre, and even if there were circumstances beyond his control it was awful customer service.

Peter is a true bike geek in the best way and focuses on a lot of older more specialized steel and boutique bicycles. He sells used bicycles and can help you find something just right. He can do a quick, inexpensive fix for you and prioritizes those of us that commute by bicycle to get us back on the road quickly. Expect a very casual encounter in this tiny shop and dont hesitate to check back in on their progress or your expected order of some part or another. Very reasonable rates and always good conversation!

Even though I didnt find a bike at this store, the owner was still willing to tell me about other stores in the area and even gave me a tip about volunteering for the Great Maine Bike Swap to get a first look at the bikes there. As a result, I was able to get a great deal on a used road bike! The store is somewhat small, but they seem to have everything that you could want packed into it. It makes for a cozy, welcoming atmosphere for anyone interested in bicycles.

A nice shop with two friendly and knowledgeable owner/operators. No snobbery here, Peter and Karen make you feel warm and fuzzy as they patiently explain your options and related costs, as in my case, associated with restoring a 38 year old Schwinn. Highly recommended, I just wish they had an espresso machine !

I had a good experience here. They seem very nice and did what they said they would for the price they said they would. I cant ask for anything more. I wont be going anywhere else. I had a very old beat up bike they brought it back to life.
