This is an open letter to Allan Reid of Quilts and Lace in Melbourne, FL. On Saturday, September 3, 2016, I called your shop as my daughter and I were experiencing some difficulty with my Brother Scan n Cut machine. I had been dealing with Brother Customer Service and based on their findings, I believed the machine to be faulty. Your wife answered and said if we got in the car now, we would have time to arrive before the shop closed. (As a side note, we have absolutely no issue with your wife, she is a very gracious, classy lady. ) My daughter and I barely had an opportunity to get the machine in the car and leave; however, we made it before the shop closed. When we walked in you greeted us, asked how we were and I answered , “frustrated, but your wife said she could help us.” You took the machine from my daughter and then said, “This is black! Where did you buy it?” I said I bought it online some time back and then tried to explain the problem. I was interrupted by you saying, “I have no sympathy for you. People like you buy machines online or somewhere besides here and then come in and expect us to help you.” Understand we did not come there for your sympathy. We came there as you are advertised as an authorized Brother dealer. To me that means you are trained/qualified to work on Brother machines and I am pretty sure in Brother International’s definition, an authorized dealer is one that is trained/authorized to work on Brother products no matter where the machine is purchased. As far a asking for help: it never entered my mind we would be getting free help. We came in prepared to pay for your wife’s consultation as well as your time if the machine could be fixed. We found ourselves explaining my health is why I purchased online, but then stopped. Where the machine is purchased should have nothing to do with it; I do not have to explain myself as to where/why I purchased the machine to have it repaired. It is clear to me in your case, “authorized Brother dealer” means only if the machine is purchased at Quilts and Lace. You might very well have repaired the machine, but not without the rude, inappropriate tongue lashing we received from you. As for the tears you witnessed, do not think for one moment those were due to you “hurting my feelings” or because you created a scene in front of your wife and the customers in the shop. Those were tears of anger – when I get extremely angry, I cry which, in turn, makes me even angrier. I chose not to engage in an unpleasant conversation with you in front of your wife or customers. It was determined by your wife the machine could not be repaired. We paid her and left. This open letter is to let you know my daughter and I will not be subjected to this kind of behavior from anyone, but especially someone who professes to be in a business of dealing with the public. You will not get that opportunity again.

I was astonished and disappointed to read the "1" rating review posted by a woman whod purchased a machine online that was not living up to her expectations. She brought it to Quilts and Lace to see if the problem could be fixed, but was offended by the observation that machines purchased online may have problems that are then difficult to resolve. I believe her characterization of the treatment she received at Quilts and Lace was unduly harsh and misleading, less indicative of typical customer experiences and more likely associated with thin skin. I say this because I had a completely different experience under similar circumstances during several visits to the shop (so not an isolated occurrence). First, let me state that it is difficult to find a sewing machine business that specializes in sewing machines rather than vacuum cleaners that sells sewing machines on the side. To find one that not only sells, but also services the machines and trains novice buyers on how to use them is cause for celebration! That said, I sought repair assistance at Quilts and Lace for a "vintage" machine that I had purchased elsewhere, for which I was graciously accommodated by the same individual who was maligned in the aforementioned review. Allan not only serviced my older sewing machine, he also went so far as to raid his personal sewing machine to obtain a part that was no longer available. And then he did not charge me for the part!! Next, I consulted with Allan via email about a specialty machine that I had purchased ONLINE, which had been troublesome from the start. He gave me instruction on what to do, which worked well enough to make it usable, but when I return to Melbourne for winter, I intend to bring that troublesome machine with me so that Allan can work his magic on it. I wont make the mistake of purchasing a machine online again after the problems I encountered. Not when there is a local business like Quilts and Lace that offers full sewing machine sales, service, training, and stands behind the products they sell - in addition to being kind, knowledgeable, and helpful every time I enter the shop.

Friendly knowledgeable staff. I had a beginner machine that was far below the quality of machine they stock- but they took their time, had a "look see" and got it back up and running. No pressure to upgrade prematurely of my skill level, completely friendly and nice. Would definitely recommend to the beginner and the experienced. Im sure their classes are fantastic too! Thank you!
