The Glass House is an icon of modern architecture. A pilgrimage many architects will do at least once. Interestingly enough though I was the only one on that day’s tour. Certainly the $30 1-hr tour might be more than enough for the general public but it probably isnt enough to absorb it all it and a shame to miss the other buildings. Those who are interested gets bumped to 2 hr $45 and 2.5 hr $100 if you wanted a more extensive tour of the grounds. Therefore I recommend at least the 2 hr tour. You are driven to the site from the Visitor Center which is right next to the train station so making the trip from NYC is quite easy. Everyone one is friendly and helpful. Our docent was really knowledgeable and had lots of information, historical facts to talk as she led us around. I did the 2.5 hr tour which gave some time to enjoy the buildings and photograph it but you are not allow to wander much from the prescribed path. While I understand the need for preservation of the grounds the ability to see the structures as they are indented within in the landscape can frustrating but at the same time I’m sure the snobby rich neighbor don’t want people wandering around. You never get to see the lake. The Glass house is only one of the many buildings within the land and while it might be the most important, the rest of the buildings play in the architectural evolution of Philip Johnson.

Make reservations to the Glass House and its other buildings at least one month in advance to reserve a place on the tour of this famous architects home in New Canaan and a ride on the bus that leaves from the Glass House Visitor Center on Elm Street to visit Philip Johnsons estate on the west side of town. Youll spend most of the day touring the architects home while stopping to enjoy the magnificent works of art in the painting and sculpture galleries, works of art by themselves. Make a donation to the Glass House celebrating its tenth anniversary as a public museum. Call to take a private tour of the uniquely beautiful architecture of the Visitors Center downtown.

Ive been waiting for this tour for a year. Finally, I visited Philip Johnsons Glass House which is inspired by Mies van set Rohes Farnsworth House. When you see it in person, Glass House is in a weird scale and less permeability such as the very narrow bathrooms door, low ceiling, and no ceiling lights. Ive seen his concept is delivered by composition of materials and perfect geographic location. However, the entire site is composed by different copies that from ancient Egypt or Greece or other masterpieces. It is a good place for visiting to get know the modernism movement in America. #philipjohnson #newcannan #connecticut #glasshouse

An incredible experience for any modern arts and architecture fanatics out there! I took an incredible 2.5 hour tour of the property with a fantastic guide leading a small group of us throughout the property. I would definitely go back and do a self guided walking tour the next time as you only see so much depending on the tour youve signed up for. Highly recommended if you are in the NYC area or Connecticut for a fantastic afternoon out!

This is not only a tour of the Glass House but of the grounds which include work and art studios. The visitors center is across the street from the train station and the guide will transport you to the site as part of the price of admission. The guide had many stories of the history of the house and residents. Their obvious pleasure in their vocation was well communicated.

Legacy of MoMA curator and architect Philip Johnson. Fantastical architectural landscape park with multiple architectural structures among them the Glass House, the brick house and several gallery spaces. We took the Glass House and Galleries tour which was great, but would recommend even more extensive tours.

Visited during Yayoi Kusamas installation of Dots Obsession – Alive, Seeking for Eternal Hope - and loved it! Wished the art gallery hadnt been "closed" due to renovations but the 2 hour tour was absolutely worth the $. Looking forward to visiting again in the future!

Fantastic tour of the buildings and grounds of the Glass House. Recommended to anyone interested in modern art and architecture, especially New Canaanites that have "driven by 100 times but never went in".

An amazing way to see mid-century experimental architecture. From here you can see how it evolved and where it is now.

Great and informative tour and guide. Funny that the least impressive structure on the property was the glass house.
