TL;DR - Docs has awesome staff and a huge inventory. However, their prices are well above what youd find on eBay or even another used game store here in town and it ruins what could be the best used game shop in town! Docs is in a great position to be able to be the best used video game store in Denver. But instead, they overprice, use questionable tactics to acquire inventory, and spam craigslist with ads where they dont belong. I have been to Docs a handful of times, and still stop in every once in a while in hopes that things have improved. Every time, however, Im just as disappointed as the last time I was there. Its a shame, too. The employees, in general, are super nice and obviously love games, and their selection is incredible! This combination is what could make them the go-to place for used video games in Denver... But then you see the prices... Im not stupid, I understand a business requires overhead. I dont go into a used game store and expect to find things at rock bottom prices like you might find at a garage sale or thrift store. I do, however, expect to find fair prices, which at most game stores is right around or a bit under average eBay pricing (many places use videogames.pricecharting… along with common sense as a general guide). But this sadly just isnt the case as Docs. In the many times Ive been there, I have never seen something I was interested in that wasnt at LEAST 10% higher (often much more) than what I could find it for somewhere else. Some might argue, "Youre paying for the convenience of not waiting on shipping." Thats well and good, but when I can just go to one of the many other game stores in Denver and find it for a much better deal, Im not paying for convenience, theyre just taking advantage of the misinformed. Rumor has it they purchase much of their inventory from other used game shops in town and mark up from there. I have no idea the validity of this rumor, but it would make sense in justifying where their high prices come from. If this is true, this is horrible business practice. You will never see in any text book that the best way to run a business is to buy high and sell higher. Lastly, Docs consistently posts way too many ads in the wrong part of craigslist. This is more annoying than anything else. Businesses are not supposed to post ads in the "by owner" part of craigslist. Thats why the "by dealer" section exists, thats where your ads belong. Not a single other used game store in Denver posts ads in the owner section of craigslist, let alone several times a day... As I alluded to in the beginning of this review, I would really like to love Docs. Their employees are friendly, the atmosphere is great, the inventory is huge - everything you need to have an incredible store. The price gouging and annoying ads just ruin it. I really hope that someday I can redact this entire review and give them 5-stars, but until the price gouging ends, it doesnt matter how friendly the staff is or how great the inventory is, I cant justify 10-40% markups compared to the next game store in town. Im not asking for rock bottom prices, just fair prices.

I went to the original Docs store this weekend looking for Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Not only did they have several copies, they also had a minty Prima strategy guide for the game. I asked the gentleman behind the counter to see if they had a nice black label copy. The black label copy had a beat up jewel case so he let me swap it out with one of the greatest hits jewel cases in nicer condition. The overall experience was very pleasant. This is not my first trip into Docs, and it wont be my last. To the guy complaining about prices below, of course Docs prices arent going to be as good as eBay/Amazon. Docs is a physical brick and mortar store with employees to pay, rent/lease on the building, and utility/electric bills. However, there is something to be said for having the privilege of actually picking up, feeling, and examining merchandise before you purchase it - something you definitely cant do with online retailers. There are no shipping fees, and no risk of your purchase being improperly described. Every little nick, tear, smudge or crack will be examined with your own eyes. For me, I would say the best thing about the place is a) friendly staff b) huge selection. If I had to pick a con it would be that they dont have many top-shelf/top-tier/super expensive games. A high end collector can still have fun here, but he/she probably isnt going to find something super rare, either.

I have been playing games ever since the day I first received a Gameboy Advance. There is almost no where that I can go anymore to buy any games older than the Nintendo DS. If anyone is looking for an Excellent place to purchase any game for almost any system. Docs Video Games is the perfect place. Everyone I have ever met and talked to in their store has been outstanding. This is now the only store that I will go to to purchase any of my games or any new system that I want to buy. Their prices are fair, by far better than the big chain competitors such as Gamestop, and as I mentioned before, all the people that work there are extremely friendly, and will always help. The past two reviews are not at all anything like what I have ever experienced at Docs, to anyone who is reading this review before going to Docs, give it a chance, this is the absolute best game store that I have ever been in. I have made over 12 purchases from the store in the past 6 months, and honestly, I dont see myself ever going back to another chain store for any of my gaming needs. Their returns policy is outstanding, although I have never had the need to return any of the Games or Systems that I have received. Thank you to everyone at Docs Video Games for keeping such an excellent store! You have gained another shopper for life!

I have tried so so so hard to like this place because I love supporting local game shops, but it has made it so hard for me to like it. The first experience I had was where there was a game I wanted, but they sold it online. I though okay that is fine I will just pay the shipping to get it and buy some other games to make up for it and so I did. 3 weeks later, no games. I contact them to try to figure out what is going on and it seems like my order was not put in and they would send it right away. Okay that is fine I will still get it. One week later, all the other games were here, but the one I wanted and some cheap game I will never play as an appology, but not the game I ordered. I look at the receipt and they took it off and refunded me as they no longer had it in stock, but never told me. So I swore I would only ever go in to buy a game there. I have been in three times and each time they dont have the game I want. They look like they have a large stock and the games that I want arent THAT rare, but each time I come in they treat me like I am an idiot for coming in and looking for the game and do not offer to hold one if I really want one. Waste of time and effort for me and I feel so frustrated when I last left I was close to tears.
