Do not try to order anything for REI special order from the Tustin or Huntington Beach. They are just not set up to do things that way. e.g I went the store to buy an expensive backpack ($369), it needed the straps changed to a different size, they said they would change them out at no extra charge. I had to go to customer service and they took my order, I suggested to them I needed the pack it within one week for a trip. They said wow that was quick. I told them the vendor was two days shipping time away and if they would call them the next day it could be arranged. I called the next day to follow up, they told me they called but company was closed at 2pm they were on eastern time. (the excuse did not add up as the company was on mountain time). I called another store to try to get someone who could help me faster, they told me I had to pay for the extra parts and would place the order immediately I told them what the other store told me they said they would check and get back to me, two days later no return call. I never heard back form the first REI store either. I ended up buying the pack for $150 less ($230 vs. $369) no tax free shipping. I called the company that made the pack, they sent me the straps I needed no charge on the promise I would return them ( Gregory Mountain Products) so I could get the pack together for my trip. REI gets no stars for any special order, they operate as slow and incompetently as the government and they do not have consistently trained customer service people. So if its in the store great if its not dont waste your time.

If you need camping, hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking or other outdoor gear you cant go wrong with REI. You wont find a lot of cheap crap here, only a selection of high quality gear. They have good prices on what they carry though. I have bought a ton of gear at REI in my life and have always been happy with it. I still use a lot of the backpacking equipment I bought decades ago. I was even more impressed than usual with my most recent shopping experience though. I was going on a camping trip with friends and we found out we were going to have one more person and another giant tent in our car 3 days before the trip. We have a CRV and there was no way we were going to fit all of our stuff and 4 people in the car. I had been looking at roof racks and pods for a trip coming up in July, but this definitely accelerated my timeline. I went into REI on a Monday night after work and when I walked in I told them I was looking for a roof rack and pod and needed it by Thursday morning. The guy who helped me was great, he quickly priced out both a Thule and Yakima rack and helped me figure out which pods would fit on my car without having to take the antenna off. I needed the rack to get the pod home, and didnt want to worry about something missing or not fitting, so they put everything on hold and my wife came in on Wednesday to have them install everything at the store. They were super nice about the whole thing and showed her how everything worked and got everything adjusted perfectly. So not only were they super helpful and nice, but they saved our camping trip.

****UPDATE 03/25/17: since the service here was so terrible, I went to a bike shop and got all the time and attention that I needed and bought a bike that was Just right for me and over the $700 budget I thought Was the max I would spend. Such terrible service here Its a shame because I was ready to buy! This is for the workers in the Cycling department. Bike Dept Associate Cassie: It was a weekday earlier in the day, it was super busy and Cassie still took an great amount of time to give me details about different bikes and let me ride two of them. I feel like I now know a little more about the bikes Rei carries since Im extremely new to cycling. She was just really detailed about everything. But it was getting time for my husband to go to work and I didnt want to make a rushed decision. She even told me to come back when I had more time. I thought that was great I didnt feel like she was pushing a sale on me but that she actually cared I got the right bike. Oh yeah and she even went an extra step and Checked if there were some basic classes to teach me how to care for my new bike. A few days later, I returned to REI to buy a bike I felt like today I had more time to make a sound decision. I walk in no one is in the cycling department but I see an older man he says hell be right with me but takes a while. So I walk around The bikes and see another associate I recognize from the other day. She says she can help me.

Many businesses can learn a lot about how REI operates. They are not over-priced, they are not pushy and salesy, you can always find a staff member, they are very knowledgeable (surprising sometimes how knowledgeable they are), they are willing to help, they take the time to ensure you get what you need, store is well kept, clean, and organized. The products they carry are all great quality - they do not sell junk. In addition to selling only quality products, they back it up with an amazing guarantee and return policy - what other company has that much confidence in the service they provide and products they sell? On top of that, their prices are very competitive and reasonable, with frequent sales and great deals. Sometimes businesses and employees can be so strict and rigid and stick to store policy, as if they were a robot, or force a sale on you, or dont know what they are talking about but pretend they do, and complete disregard you as a human being, which can be maddening, to say the least. REI ges above and beyond, they make you feel welcome - like a good friend! Thanks REI! :)

I was looking for a lock for my motorcycle. The common knowledge is that one can use a bicycle lock on a motorcycle and vice versa. Im standing there looking at all the locks and this guy came in asking if he can help. I said Im looking for a lock to lock my motorcycle. He responded that I wont find any here. I told him that he was wrong and there is at least one lock that is definitely designed for motorcycles and at least few that can be used on a motorcycle. He proceeded that thats the only one, and I should look somewhere else. I thanked him for his help and told him to basically leave me alone as I was not interested in hearing what else he had to say about things that he clearly doesnt know anything about. Since I was in a rush and needed that one lock, I still purchased it. Otherwise I would have taken my $100 elsewhere as this guy clearly didnt want me to spend it at REI.
