This store carries Tokuhon, which for your laymen out there, translates to "senior citizen crack". Im kidding, of course. This medicine is like Ben Gay, without the nasty smell. I thought Tokuhon is mostly outlawed in here the mainland. I only see it available at Longs Drug Stores in Hawaii, so Im delighted I have a new supplier. Oh, I mean "source". Unfortunately, no tuna poke when I visited. I did find fresh tamarind though, and ankimo monkfish liver - one of the very few places who have this all the time. Good looking kurobota pork and I also bought a good deal of their plate lunches. Bought scrumptious looking thinly sliced, nicely marbled sukiyaki beef for the ever lazy chef like myself. Marinated those last night in a little mirin, shoyu, fresh organic ginger, organic garlic, organic green onions, brown sugar. Ill write again to let you know how it turned out. They sell 99 cent enoki mushrooms, great deal and Kohala Kim Chee, made in Honolulu. Ikura salmon eggs are cheaper than buying at the Russian delis in the Richmond. What more can I ask for? Maybe just slightly better service. Service with a smile would be nice. I only get this from the Spanish guy behind the sushi counter. Hes always nice and courteous,

A great family-owned Japanese grocery store that has been in downtown San Mateo for decades. Its between Nijiya and this store that I do my Japanese grocery shopping. Besides the crazy daily "50% off selected housemade bento, sushi, grilled fish, and sashimi 30 minutes before closing" deal, I shop here specifically for their fresh fish, 5 shucked oysters for $6, fresh ramen (they also sell fresh soba and udon noodles too) in the refrigerator case across the produce aisle, Japanese rice cracker snacks and the Green Tea flavored Kit Kat. I also purchase their weekly delivers of hand made San Jose Tofu and Sacramento Tofu and Benkyodo Mochi. During the summer, you can get 4 Benkyodo Blueberry filled mochi for $5.25. Saves a trip to driving to JTown in The City. A great selection of sake to chose from, prices are not outrageous here. Suruki also does sushi tray catering (in the back at the Fresh Fish counter) and has a special New Year nishime party menu selection to choose from. I usually put in my bento box order at Kazs (next door) and come here to do my quick shopping here before going back and picking up take-out.

I adore this place! Cozy but with a great selection of Japanese nom-noms and some Hawaiian items also (frozen pork laulau, manapua, Zippys, etc.). Assorted takeout sushi/sashimi/hot foods for lunch/dinner/snacks. Good going on great shochu and sake selection with excellent prices. Lots of fresh fish for your homemade sashimi needs. Fatty pork and beef for sukiyaki, shabu shabu, pork shiso roll, et cetera. Curry blocks, propane burner for shabu shabu, canned coffee, assorted frozen oddities, everythings represented. And yes you can almost always find fresh wasabi here ... $90/lb but then again you only need $5-10 for one or two meals. Finally, as much as I love Mitsuwa, even when Im in the mood to drive down there, the crush of people is just a drag, and the awesome tableware shop was replaced by a food court long ago. So, long live Suruki.

This is a nice local Japanese grocery. They usually cant compete on price with the big chains, but they have a nice selection of Japanese foods and goods some of which can only be found in a Japanese market. Were told that much of their sashimi-grade tuna comes from Hawaii, which is cheaper than Nijiyas tuna from Japan. That works fine for us. I especially like some of their deli items, particularly the chicken karaage (fried chicken). Most Japanese delis in the area carry karaage but I like Surukis the best. Parking on the street near the store is normally metered ($0.25 for 15 minutes), so dont forget to bring some change. There are also public automated ticket lots nearby.

just returned from shopping here..had a not too pleasant experience with cashier.(clement) My total was 10.13 I gave him a 20 dollar bill and a 1.00 bill..expecting 10.87 back..Instead he gave me 87 cents back...I told him that I gave him 21.00..he just shrugged his shoulders and said he did not think so...I should have been more carefull I think he was confused and seeing only 2 bills he thought I gave him a ten and a one dollar bill... I think that he just doesnt know how to make change and he was confused.. i may be mistaken..but if they are over ten dollars in that till they should give back my money!

Pretty cool place. At 6pm a lot of prepared foods are marked 1/2 price. There is literally a group of people waiting for it and blocking customers from shopping starting at around 5:30. Yesterday i busted my way through the crowd and someone kept getting in my way when i noticed he was trying to hide items he want to buy at half price. I find the half-price crew incredibly annoying. I cant get there before 5:30 to avoid them if i want to shop on a weekday. Great way for Suruki to get rid of fresh food for the day, but not great for me. Still love it and go there on weekends with no problems.

A very conveniently located and pretty well stocked Japanese supermarket, located right near central park. Though the market is fairly small, they have a large selection of different noodles, condiments, drinks, alcohol (sake/beer) snacks, and much more. You can get bento (lunchboxes), sashimi, sushi, small Japanese vegetable dishes, and other regular side dishes. They close really early, 7PM weekdays, 6PM Sunday. It would be good to be open another hour till 8PM or so. They also offer many fresh food items at 50% after 6, but be warned, theres a huge hungry crowd waiting for them.

Hmmm gotta admit I was kinda disappointed. After reading all the reviews, I was excited to give it a try today for a quick pick up lunch. First of all the sushi, sashimi and bento boxes did not look appetizing at all. I came around 2pm and everything looked like it was stale. Also, I was expecting a little more varieties ... Just 2 or 3 different rolls some sashimis and 3 different types of bento boxes... I got a few things, some kind of triangle shaped rice to wrap with seaweed paper, sashimi box and hijiki. The food was meh, just mediocre. Nothing was good everything was meh...

Great place to shop all things japanese food. Also they have a great selection of Sake!! No seriously great selection of Sake, mainly the small bottles which are great to get a sample to see if you want to buy the bigger one. Also they put all their perishable lunch food like their sushie rolls and other lunch specials at 50% off

Great place for Japanese food and goods. They have prepared and packaged sushi, sashimi, and poke, along with hot foods and complete meals. Also a selection of items from Hawaii. Fresh fish cut to order, in back. Vegetables, frozen foods, teas, ramen, and sauces. One stop place for all your needs. Parking structure close by.

Japanese supermarket with lots of Japanese sweets and breads, ready-to-prepare hotpot trays, bento and sushi! Loved it~ Ive also heard at 6pm the bento that are left go 50%off? Ill have to go and check next time ^^ but it would explain why last time at 540 we saw a line forming outside of the supermarket!

Food is decent, service is horrible; i think they are probably understaffed. I like that they have sports on the TV sets on the weekends. One thing to note: as someone with kids... make sure they go to the restroom before going to this restaurant; possibly some of the dirtiest restrooms around.
