Ive been going to this safeway for the last 68 days since Ive been in San Jose and the first 20 days was good. Coming each morning and getting a breakfast burrito with no meat products just veggies until they hired this woman that started to charge me for veggies when I am not getting any meat. On top of that, she will make excuses about the jo jo potatoes are either cold or she cant give me a side of Jo Jo potatoes. That is breaking store policy for one, declining a customer food is such poor deli and employment skills. She will continue each morning to say that she needs the rest for making more when in fact she can make more because I was told from other deli employee and the manager , She isnt allowed to tell a customer no, its a first come first serve basics. But this morning August 15th 2017 is a the last draw. She clearly had Jo Jo Potatoes then continues to tell me that they were cold when Im looking at her and saying, but have two hot oven to heat up food that is cold or room temperature behind you. What didnt make any sense of the situation was she continue to say that she made them this morning since 5:30am and its 7:23am and they were under a heat lamp? She then ask me if I wanted to still get a burrito but she will have to charge me from extra veggies and I laugh and reply with, why? Why offer me a item that doesnt have the main purpose of the burrito and I am a pescetarian and you should know this by now, come on. but she doesnt know what a pescetarian is and she works at a deli handling food? Deli employees are required to understand food and what not to do and what to do. Especially not to cross contamination food products with others. This is why Id prefer to come in the even hours when other employees other than her are working. Matt is a cool guy that works in the evening the even hours and Jessy is also another cool gentlemen that isnt going to tell me no and understand there should be more options for those that dont eat meat or pork. Lets be honest here, there meat options are all pork and the sausage is most likely a mixture but as I was saying before about the other staff deli employees, they will not say no and will not tell customers what they cant have. Its build your own is the title of the burrito. I have report her before and was given a gift card but she continues to decline customer good as if there is a limit when there is no limit. Im getting sick of this employee tell me no when everyone else says she isnt allowed to do that. But the other reason to this review is to also point out the long wait time on a line when buying beer and other things. This has been going on for a while now and a cashier will just disappear when its rush hour and one one cashier is open but they do have self-check outs. As I said before, if you buying beer you will have to wait long periods of time until someone calls for another cashier.

This is a nice Safeway store but would be nicer if they had the features of a full-size Safeway store like a pharmacy, A coffee shop, the flower shop, and a larger variety of products. One thing that has improved at the Safeway store is theyve started to add A larger variety of products by putting items higher on shelves and moving the shelves closer together. By taking up some of the extra space at the store used to have, they have created a problem for people in wheelchairs and people who may be short in stature. For people that are in a wheelchair or short in stature it creates difficulties in maneuvering through the store in reaching items that are on the higher shelves. One way they could alleviate some of these problems is by expanding into the space that is available for retail next-door. At this point the space is still available, but the store management seems to have decided that they dont want to make an expansion of the store. Most of the staff seems to be friendly and helpful, but the New store management doesnt seem to understand how to treat customers. This is very disappointing because the previous management seem to understand how to treat customers and not take them for granted. Because this is the only full-size grocery store that is available in downtown San Jose, they seem to have lots of room for growth if they can just get to the point of understanding the customers and employees are there most important resource. One other disappointment here is that the local Safeway Ad quite often shows products that are not available in the Safeway store. If theyre going to advertise products in the local Safeway Ad, it seems that they should be available in the store.

I tend to use this store often since its a short walk from my house. Sadly, the convenience factor hardly makes up for what this store lacks. First off, theres almost never anyone working behind the meat counter. If by chance you find someone who can help you, it usually turns out that theyre not qualified to work said counter. The second large shortfall of this store (aside from the lack of selection and being overpriced) is their crappy vegetable selection. I stopped buying vegetables here because they are always poor quality and look like theyve been rescued from another grocery stores dumpster! Overall, this store has a lot to improve upon in order for it to be on par with other Safeway stores that Ive frequented in the past. Ive resorted to doing most of my shopping at the Target near the airport; better selection and better prices. I would rather give my business to Safeway, but since they cant cut the mustard Im going elsewhere.

If you dont mind paying "airport" prices, this Safeway is for you. If you like standing in line a lot, this Safeway is for you. If you like waiting a loooong time for help in the deli or bakery or meat departments, this Safeway is for you. The checkers are nice, but overworked and they need to hire more. Theyre understaffed in the other departments too. You have to pass a gauntlet of beggars and crazies out front. Its a good example of the owners skimping on everything possible, especially employees, for more profit. The main problem here is theres no competition. The closest other market is the equally skanky Safeway on San Carlos ("Midtown"). I"m trying to work out how to spend less and less here. Im so happy Sprouts and Whole Foods are in the general area now.

I visited most recently during Fanime weekend so Im sure that affected my visit. It wasnt very crowded when I went inside but I have a feeling the employees had been run down by the busy weekend. My husband and friend waited for so long in the sandwich line that our friend just walked to Subway and was served faster. It wasnt a very long sandwich line, but they only had one person making one sandwich at a time while the other employee only did register. Im not sure if their speed is typical or if they were just tired by Sunday afternoon. If you are visiting downtown it is convenient, but I couldnt imagine making this my normal grocery store.
