We normally love this place and would give it 5 Stars hands down. This time we attended Easter brunch which we have done for the past couple of years. It was somewhat similar two prior years with the exception that the server wasnt very attentive perhaps somewhat distracted. We had to ask for the champagne which normally is offered up front as advertised. She said they dont give it unless its requested. Then we ordered a soda and had to ask for it three times before we finally received it. She never told us about the buffet in the other room. If we hadnt known from prior years we wouldnt have known. Then we went and got our salads from the buffet and here comes the entrees no room to place them on the table. I felt like we were being rushed which is not how it was in Prior years. Every time we needed the waitress she was nowhere to be found . Which is very unlike the butcher shop . Now today we found out we were double-charged on our credit card. Hes trying to tell me that the waitress must have run the card twice which doesnt surprise me. I wasnt going to complain about our experience since it normally isnt like that but when I mentioned it to him he blew me off telling me they received nothing but rave reviews. And to call back tomorrow and they will see if they can help with the bill. He didnt seem sympathetic at all. The bill was close to $200 so doubling the bill is a substantial amount of money for us. Im really sad to say any of this about this awesome restaurant but this time Im very disappointed. Hopefully it gets resolved.

Oh, The Butcher Shop. Step into a time machine and spend an hour or so in the era when women were broads, men thought cigars smelled good, and no one in San Diego had ever heard of Ruths Chris and Mortons. That last point is a good place to start with the Butcher Shop. If you want to enjoy your experience, forget that you have ever been to Ruths Chris, Mortons, Donovans, or any of the other expensive, high-end, prime-cut steakhouses, because thats not what you are going to get here. At the Butcher Shop, you step into a 1950s steakhouse: dark, wood-paneled bar, library books spilling off the walls, leather booths, and decent steaks. Its the kind of place where the political and business elite of San Diego would dine, if we didnt have the elite restaurants to match. Of course, many of them still do. The throwback charm of the place is irresistable to all but the snobbiest modernists. At my most recent and only visit in the last 20 years, I had a decent prime sirloin, coupled with some disappointing vegetables, preceded by an average dinner salad. My drink was mixed nicely, and the price of it all was reasonable. While you probably wont be wowed by the cuisine, surrounded by such a charming, throwback environment, youre bound to enjoy it all anyway.

The place is reaaaally cozy. But in my opinion, food is just ok though not cheap. Management here has really some serious problems!!! One dude sitting next to pur table was speaking incredibly loudly over the phone. The first time we reported it, the manager only made a sign to the guy for less than a second and went away. We called him a second time because nothing changed after 5mn, the manager replied he will look into that later and went away. He only came back once the guy stop talking over the phone after being annoying for more than 15mn and basically ruining our dinner. When the dude went away, he did a high five with the manager though not knowing him at all: this is lame! The manager poorly apologized and tried to say he did the right thing. We ended up not paying for the entire meal, except for the tip of the waiter that did a good job. I would never go back there anymore. Just your manager for real, this is incredibly not tolerable. Yes, I understand as a manager you want to be nice with everyone. But that does not mean and justify that you have to do nothing when a client as a total inappropriate behavior and disturbs all the other tables nearby.

I have been here many times on many occasions. I have even booked a few family and work events here. I cant say that Ive had the greatest meal of my life here but I can say every time weve been there the food was very good and the service was very good. There is something to be said for an establishment that always delivers a really good dining experience, whether its a lunch for four people or a party for 100 people. The trademark steaks and prime rib is always done just right and everything is prepared with care. The ingredients are always fresh and the service even fresher. The atmosphere is classic steakhouse with the dark crushed velvet in the pictures of movie stars on every wall. Make sure to ask for real horseradish with your steak not the toned down stuff they serve to the tourists. My only beef, no pun intended, with the butcher shop is that their parking lot is too small. Although the valets do an excellent job getting everyone parked and into the restaurant quickly you need to get there 10 minutes earlier then your reservation to allow for the parking. And I do suggest you make a reservation is this place remains a San Diego classic.

They should really train their servers better. We tried eating there today (9/04/2016), but ended up leaving before we could order dinner: They sat us down in the back of the restaurant away from the other tables. (There were 4 adults, a 2 year old and a 1 year old)It took the waitress about 10 minutes to get to our table to get us drinks. She came back about five minutes later to make sure we had our drinks and tell us she would be right back to take our order. We managed to get her to put in an appetizer order for us, which came out quickly. By the 30 minute mark, she still hadnt shown up to take our order. By the time she came back I just told her to close out our check. She said "ok" and took my card. She made no effort to understand why we wanted to leave. I walked up to her as she was running my card and had the nerve to tell me something along the lines of "I tried getting to you, but I just cant leave hot food sitting out" and made no attempt to ammend the lack of service, or bring a manager over to fix the lack of service. I probably will never choose to go back there simply for the lack of service and the lack of caring.

My husband and I are in town to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We are so glad we decided to go to The Butcher Shop for dinner. It was actually more of a late lunch. We wanted to avoid busy times, so we stopped in to eat around 2:00 pm. We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. There were candles and real flowers on the table, great music playing, and our server was wonderful. This was perfect for a romantic dinner. She found out we were there to celebrate our anniversary and offered to take our picture when she saw me with my camera out. They also brought us a complimentary slice of cheesecake with a candle in it since we were celebrating. *It was the best cheesecake ever!* My husband ordered the New York Steak and I ordered the Top Sirloin Steak. Both were cooked as we requested and were certainly the best steaks we have ever eaten. The price was definitely affordable for our celebration dinner. Considering the atmosphere, service, and food, it was definitely worth every penny.
