A *used* copy of Candide with an *inscribed* price of $6 sells for $12 here? Thats absurd. Other prices in the store looked comparable. Used books are supposed to be cheaper than new books, not twice as expensive. The clerk explained, somewhat defensively (reflexively, even, probably having encountered the same confusion in other customers), "the manager sets the prices." Ace job there, manager.
