There is no reason to go to Petco, save for convenience of location if youre an aquarium, reptile, or bird enthusiast. Petco often mislabels their small animals like fish, birds, and reptiles, rarely knowing what they need to be happy and healthy. Their fish are ALWAYS dead and floating, or being picked at in the tanks, and they refuse to separate male or female live bearers in their tanks. Last time I went, I saw four Dalmation Molly fry swimming around with the adults in there, all already infected with ich, of course. And dont even get me started on the number of rotting betta fish in their cups of death, while the staff says they can survive in those half gallon nano cubes. Sure, they CAN with daily water changes, but the personalities of this intelligent fish really come out when theyre put into a proper 10 gallon aquarium. Not to mention their staff is rude and condescending, more interested in making a sale than the welfare of your pets. I followed the advice of one of their fish experts when I was just starting the hobby, and the dead fish, and the amount of money that I paid to Petco to replace just kept piling up. Youre much better off going to Aquatic Pets. Their staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and never have a dead or sick fish in their tanks, nor do they push a sale. Every fish Ive gotten from them has survived and reached a full adult size thanks to the regular maintenance of their tanks, proper feeding and care, and then careful instruction of how best to care for your plants and animals during the checkout process. Even in answering a few simple questions over the phone, I was put on hold for twenty minutes while a worker from aquatics was hunted down, and then another ten while he apparently looked for the product I needed, before saying it was out of stock. Funny, when I got there not five minutes later, I found what I needed right next to the fish food.... Petco is just a big box store that doesnt care about its animals, or its customers. Save yourself money and heartache, and head to a specialty pet store that actually does its due diligence by their pets, scaled, furry, or feathered.

IF you are in the koi hobby and need something in a emergency....PETCO and PETSMART are NOT the answer! I urgently needed a 48" light fixture for a 48"55-gallon aquarium which I use to house koi during quarantine sessions....THEY REFUSE TO CARRY. Also they stock this "pigeon feed made into fancy little pellets to resemble koi food and packaged in bags labelled "Kaytee Kois Choice premium fish food"....WARNING: DO NOT feed this garbage to your koi! It is very poisonous to koi and all other fish. I know of 6 different people who fed this crap to their koi (after some jerk-off aquatics "specialist" highly recommended it)..and in ALL cases, their koi were ALL DEAD within 24 hours of being fed this garbage!.The thing is Kaytee are NOT koi people....they are BIRD PEOPLE..who dont know a single thing about koi ponds. Back in 1992, Bakersfields aquatics and koi pond industry got invaded by a corporate intruder, Petsmart...and they went hell-bent on wiping out all the local businesses like Aquatic Gardens, Fish Shack, Crystal Tanks, and many others....soon there were no more places to buy koi and koi-related items....Now things have gone from bad to worse whith Petco showing up here and once all these corporate jerks wipe out the local businesses they cut back and stop carrying the high-demand products and carry only junk....WE AS A COMMUNITY NEED TO TAKE BACK the aquatics and koi industry by joining together and fighting the "corporates and pushing them out of our communities, educate the public and run koi businesses that will be very aggressive and resistant to corporate bullies like Petco and Petsmart, and educate ALL fish hobbyists, especially the new ones just starting out in the koi hobby about the GRAVE-DANGER of feeding poisonous corn-stuffs like "Kaytee Kois Choice" and "Purina Musuri" to their koi. CORN IS TOXIC TO KOI!!

I have been a member for Rewards card since 2006 but have never received anything from them as a benefit. Every time I ask them about my rewards, the answer is the same. They dont know etc. Yesterday, I bought dog food from them and I checked online before going to the store to find a coupon. The dog food I was interested in had $5 off coupon, but there website did not give an option to print it. When I got to the store and in line to pay for it, I had a cashier who definitely needed an attitude adjustment of the way she handled my questions. In short, she was totally unwilling to give me the discount because she didnt know anything about it and then didnt know anything about status of my rewards card either. Today, I went online, spend 15 minutes to create an account and check my rewards points. It shows that I have been a member since March 2006, but didnt show any reward points at all, when I pulled my history. All it showed me was my last purchase from yesterday. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Poorly managed customer service and point tracking. Just to clarify, I had given them my Rewards account every single time when buying my supplies and food for my pet. Petco, you should learn from Costco and other companies and reward your customers for their loyalty and automatically apply the coupon discount when an item calls for one and is advertised on your website. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Theres maybe 3 employees that are knowledge and care about their work. The others walk around as if they hate their job, ignoring customers because they assume youre only "looking" and are very rude especially a worker named Ashley. They dont maintain the animals very well. Theres always a lot of sick or dead fish in their tanks and not to mention the overstock of male bettas living in tiny cups. I was given 2 sick neon tetras and I knew they were sick because their colors were so dull, they were practically non-existent. Ive also seen a dead bird on the bottom of the cage during a previous visit. I let the employee know and waited about 20 minutes for it to be removed, but it never was. A week ago, an employee was telling me a reptile was so sick, it needed to be spoon fed. If youre buying accessories or food here, fine. But do not buy any pets unless you want to risk them not surviving or can put in the extra work to getting them back to good health. Its very sad and disappointing what happens to the animals.

I like the staff here. I couldnt find an item here, because it was really popular and sold out fast, but one of the workers had a bunch of home remedy alternatives that actually worked! So if you cant find it here, the staff will still be able to help you! They also have a dog grooming service inside. Make sure you take in your dogs latest rabies vaccination proof, or they wont take your dog back to groom them. Makes sense. I always bring my dog with me when I shop here, the staff loved my puppy. If your pet tends to pee on things, they have a cleanup station in the store so you can clean up after your pet. Very concenient.
