It Was 5 Inches!. A long and winding road leads to the Waring General Store front door. You can take the Welfare-Waring Road that runs past PoPos Restaurant or come in on FM 1621 from IH 10. To say the General Store resides in a small town is like calling a Shun knife a little bit sharp. And the General Store moniker is purely nominal as burgers, steaks (on Wed. nite) and drinks are whats chiefly sold here. Kitschy to the max with old country and Texas memorabilia and signs, this place is comparable to Gruene Hall with a cavernous barn of a serving area and a stage for live music. There are plenty of picnic tables outside too when the weather is willing. Place your order at the counter just inside the old screen front door. No question about whats for dinner here. The blackboard tells you in black and white that burgers are the reason you made the drive. Ordered the "Heart Stopper" 1/2 lb. burger with fries and onion rings. When asked, we were told that the onion rings were "fresh frozen"?? They were actually made here then frozen for ready preparation. We chose a likely spot among the numerous vacant picnic tables, and proceeded to enjoy our almost-cold beers and the piped in C&W while we waited. We had the place all to ourselves which would normally have worried me a bit. But, I had already heard that these burgers were good. Slid in front of us on silver trays and checkerboard red and white paper were double patty burgers that formed meaty towers some 5 inches tall! A star (assumedly lonestar) was emblazoned on the top bun and the whole thing was held together by a wooden skewer to keep the mountain of meat and other toppings from an inevitable landslide. Yet to take a bite, I was impressed by the sheer presence of the thing. My wife had already made the determination that half of hers was going home in a take out box. I will get the detractors out of the way quickly because this meat sandwich was really good. Ordered medium - received well done (unfortunately nothing new about this almost universally committed error). Onion rings were also a bit overdone. Thats it. The rest of the experience involved an unhinged jaw approach to enjoyment of a kings feast of flavorful angus beef seared on a well seasoned griddle, oozing with melted cheese, topped with a "wad" of nicely done bacon strips to "gild the lilly" and soft toasted buns . This beefy gargantuan definitely earned a place in my top 10 burger list. Managed to make the trip home without any noticeable episode of myocardial infarction as the burger name had implied. And if that kind of thing worries you, you can always opt for one of the other 1/3 lbers instead . . .

I went to the Waring General Store and had the "Best Burger in the World", and I must say, it was the best burger that I have had in a long time. The food was great, the people who worked there were extremely friendly, and the fact that they offer Kayaking, climbing, and zip-line adventures is totally unmatched in the city or hill-country. Every Wednesday night is STEAKNITE, with great food, music, and people. This is truly the way Texas used to be!

A wasted trip from San Antonio. The place is closed. The locals confirmed that. Got a hamburger at the Waring Country Store across the street. Piss poor that the owners will not take website etc. down. Should not get 1 star but could not post without adding it.
