We had this after hour craze to find out which late night coffee shop is the best. We stopped by Black Hole Coffee as we were in the neighborhood for some after meal delight. First of all, if you dont know the area well, the street Graustark St. is a very small street off of Richmond, you may missed it while driving at night. If you do miss it, youll need to U-turn at Montrose and try again. Yes, that did happen to me because I have an eye sight of a 75 years old grandpa while driving at night. The parking is a hit or miss, you can always try your luck on finding a spot on the private lot or simply park on the street. Be sure to read any signs thats posted as theres a time limit on where and when you can park. The shop has a wide variety of seating and a lot of plug outlets for the laptop users. Theres also free WiFi but I did not use this service as I was there for a nice drink and chatting with friends. The menu on the wall have all their coffees listed. As for the beer and wine, youll have to ask to server or simply look behind in the fridge to see what kind of beer they have. I see that they have a good variety of microbrews and some mainstream beers, I helped myself to an unknown beer (to me at least) and the server made sure I know the price tag on it is $7. My companions ordered coffee and lemon creme pie. My beer was pretty good and the lemon crème pie was nice and fluffy. I did not drink any coffees there so I cannot comment on how good is their coffee. Theres a mix of crowds but majority of the customers are definitely student bodies. The restroom is unisex restroom so gentlemen, be sure to aim straight, bring the lid back down, and keep it clean as the next person may be a girl you like but she find out that you have bad aim and didnt bring the lid down. Overall its a great hang out place if you dont want to be at the overcrowded Starbucks at Galleria or use free Internet because you cant afford it at home.

The Cortado is excellente. Obvs I would have 900 questions regarding the coffee, seeing that 1. Things have strange names Ive never heard of and 2. I can smell/see all of the sweets. The staff was very helpful and friendly, even despite the fact that it was packed with a hipster-esque looking array of studious folk. We enjoyed the outside dining since the weather was beautiful (and also because it was hot inside and there wasnt an open table in the place). The chocolate chip cookie I had was delicious, not hard nor undercooked-- perfectly crumbly and awesome. They had a few vegan options and a peanut butter cheesecake I would love to try. My friends tried the cubano, a latte, a greek yogurt, and a pretzel with the Shiner cheese. The greek yogurt was topped with lots of goodies. She did have to add a couple of sweetener packets, though. I couldnt get a good review on the pretzel because my friend was stuffing her face so fast. She said the cheese was "alright." But Lindsay Lohan Warhold prints? I LOLd. Overall, my only critique would be I would like to see bigger serving available on a couple of the different items. The pricing was good for the available options, IMO (which I guess thats why youre here) and the environment was great. I would go back, for sure.. and maybe get the cheesecake next time!

This was really an aptly named coffee place. The Service: I was appalled by the extremely lackluster, nonexistent customer service from both the guy and the girl working at this place earlier this month. We got there on a Saturday night about an hour prior to closing. It was not busy. There was no line. Yet, neither of them acknowledged us as we walked in, smiled or responded to a simple comment or question with any interest towards the three of us. Seriously? Why are you so depressed? You guys are a buzzkill. What really sealed the very sad deal was at closing time when the girl went with a sarcastic, dismissive comment staring with informing guests it was closing time. The Taste:: Nothing was especially great about the coffee, I had to add more flavor on my own to make it palatable. I did appreciate their self serve option and was thankful to see honey and soy and almond milk options. The Ambience: Looks like they just gathered a bunch worn out, 80s used furniture from dorm rooms and from year sales and threw them together. I get the grudge coffee look and it couldve worked but no dear, no. Warning: dont fall in this black hole.

As I continue on my search of the perfect coffee shop / study spot, I was pleased with my first experience at black hole. This is a great place to study on a random week day afternoon, I probably cant say the same for weekenders, I can imagine not being able to find a table on the weekend as the space here is limited. I got here on a monday around 2pm, it was a lot busier than I anticipated. I was lucky I was able to find a perfect spot for me to get some work done. At the counter, I ordered the antidote (with soy), to my surprise, I think I found one of my favorite coffee drinks! I have no idea what kind coffee or blend it was (Im not a coffee expert / snob, yet.), but it was perfect for my pallet, rich, smooth and just the right touch of boldness, I thoroughly enjoyed every sip of my coffee. People here are also very cool too. I felt like I was back in Austin again, oh boy do i miss that college hippy town feeling. Stay tuned, as i will continue on my journey of finding the best coffee shop / study spot in Houston, but black hole coffee house has definitely earned themselves an asterisk next to their name.

Ive been trying different coffee shops throughout Houston this week while I do work on my computer, and this is one of my favorites so far. Parking is plentiful, have come here several times at different days and ive never had a problem, although you might have to park on the street which is a 2 minute walk. Service is helpful, didnt get too many smiles but they were attentive and gave me good recommendations. Coffee was strong, didnt get to finish my cup as I was too juiced and didnt want to overload on caffeine. I usually have 1-2 cups a day when im out and about. There was a good mix of lounge couches and workstations to get stuff done. The vibe of the place is best described as a relaxed/free spirit coffeehouse place. All kinds of characters there from shorts and flip flops to suits and geld hair. After a week of driving around places ive labeled this as my favorite coffee shop of the week, plus being a 5 minute drive from Hermann Park is a plus if you like to get out and around after crunching work on your computer.

I tried this venue out since reviews about it being a good place to studio were numerous. I had the antidote and it definitely revved my system for the rest of the day. Much more powerful than it felt going down, which was smooth and rich. More roasted flavor than I prefer, but still great. And the price was excellent. I also liked a lot that they have real milk and half and half options, as well as honey. Huge plus which gives this review some added stars. There is plenty of parking whether in the lot or on the side streets, made possible because its off the main drag. Its also got a great outdoor deck. The interior was, well, black, strewn with worn old couches and small little tables where you could work but definitely could not spread out. As promised, quite a few inside were studying. Though the barista area was spotless, the place just felt grungy. Im sure for some that sort of low-end thrift shop decor is inviting and comfortable. I would only go here for coffee.
