There are different metrics for evaluating stores like this. Selection and service. 1) Product selection: Customer demand pretty much drives all hardware store inventory.I used to build my own computers, and I could never find things (=(IDE, drives, mobos, convertor cables, etc.) at new computer stores because those parts just werent in demand any longer. "Computer store" staff told me that a very small fraction of computer users built their own boxes, so they didnt want the parts. Same thing with Radio Shack, btw., when they stopped stocking cool things. This ACE stocks typical urban-related products. They do not necessarily cater to contractors or more hardcore DIY folk. I dont like it, but they serve their market segment, and they stock strictly based on SKUs scanned. Chicken and egg - if I dont find something, it will never be scanned, so will never be ordered. Most people (me included) dont fill out paper request forms, or they fill them up with complaints. 2) Service - I know a couple of cashiers that are prickly or indifferent, but most will come around if you smile or tell lame jokes. I think I know who the cashier is referenced below, LOL. I suspect they get a lot of complaints about the inventory issue, so they prolly start getting testy. They have no control over the stocking. There is at least one very clueful floor guy who not only knows where stuff is, but knows what people need based on their fuzzy descriptions. He has a good sense of humor, too. I dread the day he gets promoted to another store, or to a more managerial position. I wish I knew his name cause I would give him a public shout out.

This place is a hoarders paradise. The store looks like it came out of 1962 with screws boxes everywhere. There are no signs or directions, isles intersect each other like a street. No one offered me any help while I was in there for half hour looking for faucet parts that I had to dodge a few ladders and rails to get to. Then finally, a fat staff came in after smoking right outside the store and said, "theres a guy in the back hes been here awhile." Then and only then did I get some "help" from this dude with an attitude. How did this place stay in business all these years?? Do they even make enough money to hire all these staffs who stand around cursing?

Items are way too overpriced. This alone should get you situationally stuck between a rock and a hard place, which is a good place to be. Start scavenging and youll find almost everything you need hassle-free. O.k., I agree it is a colorful staff. So what. Why am I in this store? To get a personality assessment? If you have successfully exited the store without getting your merit badges stripped off, and are happy about that, and even have gained a loyal friend with the cashier who looks like she got fired as switch operator at a prison, then go ahead, spend that cash and downtime etcetera at the Fairmount Ace Hardware!

I accidentally bought interior wood stain last week and went to return today for exterior wood stain. I did not have a receipt, but we are talking about exchanging two $10 cans of interior stain for one $20 can of exterior stain. Not only did the clerk not accept the exchange, he called me a liar because "the computer says we havent sold this stain in forever". Yes, I have a scam where I take interior stain and exchange it for exterior scam so I can save $20 on staining my fence. Thats what I do. Rude and incompetent staff. I generally support local businesses, but I would love to see this one go out of business.

They HATE women here. Just bought a number of items there. When the man behind the register started ringing me up, I swiped my debit card. What a horrible mistake! He immediately moved into a high-pitched sing-song voice, started with "now, now, now" and proceeded to mansplain to me that I didnt know how to use a debit card. Their machine is apparently one of the few where you cant swipe until after the transaction is complete. I havent been spoken to that rudely for years. If he had just called me names, it would have been less demeaning.

HORRIFIC customer service!!!!!!! The manager is the only one Im talking about. I had a request that 3 employees confirmed with me. When I stopped back in the manager denied that anyone agreed to it. He was RUDE!! I was calmly explaining the conversation I had with several other employees (all helpful) and he cut me off, raised his voice. I will NEVER EVER go back. Dont spend your money at a place thats managed so poorly. Has he ever heard of customer service???? If it was possible to give it negative stars I would!

The only reason I go here is because its in my neighborhood. I"m a fairly proficient do-it-yourselfer and I cannot make heads or tails of this store and how things are laid out. The woman who works the counter during week consistently behaves as though she just found out her parents grounded her. I effing hate Lowes and Home Depot; however, with crappy service like what is dispensed at Fairmount Hardware its no wonder that mom and pop stores like this are going the way of the dinosaur.

My car broke down about a block from Fairmount Hardware a couple weeks ago and my husband made 4 trips to the store buying (and then returning) various tools to try to get at the starter from underneath the car. The staff was awesome - they took back everything even when it was opened and (unsuccessfully) used and ultimately one of the staff loaned us his own tool kit which he had to walk 2 blocks to get. We even got the car restarted :) They made a frustrating situation so much easier.

Ive been going to this hardware store for about 2 years. Initially, it was a typical cramped hardware store with helpful staff and mostly anything you could want (if you could find it). They recently remodeled / reorganized and it made a huge improvement. They now have just about anything you could want from a hardware store, and its all well-laid out and easy to find. Lots of tools, hardware, home supplies, etc.. The real gem is the gardening section.

Really nice and friendly people at this hardware location in fairmount. At first glance it almost seems like a local gardening or landscaping shop and once you get inside you notice all the tools. It has an old school semi unorganized appeal to the inside layout. The people are awesome and very nice and friendly, but finding what you need could be difficult. I still strongly suggest this place if youre looking for something small and quick.

This store is much older than the people who live there now - and as a child growing up in that neighborhood, I love it there. They have everything possible - even my childhood candies - a little pricey but hey it has better character, selection, and most of the workers are knowledgeable - crowded quaint - very nice than a lowes, walmart, etc. Mom and Pop feel.

This location has really stepped up during the past year or two, investing heavily to improve stock/display capacity and turning around what had been a pretty low grade of customer service/attitude by staff. Now the store is well staffed by friendly folks and they frequently have stock of things I go in only barely hoping they might have.
