Cool Moon is my favorite neighborhood ice cream shop. They have lots of flavors, many of them unusual, and rotate so theres always something new to try. Normally I choose chocolate-based flavors because Im just that type of person, but all of the other flavors at Cool Moon are so delicious that theyve caused me to stray! My new favorite is birthday cake for its wistful, and accurate, taste. Another bonus is that you get a discount for using cash, which is awesome. Plus the service is great--not your average, bored kids behind the counter. Servers seem to enjoy their jobs, will give practically unlimited tastes, and are super friendly. Cool Moon is a classic example of an independent Portland business, in that you can feel the personality of the owners in the decor and signage of the shop. Its fun, unpretentious and straightforward--refreshing, if you need to cleanse your palate of self-conscious foodie havens!

Im writing this review for the Marcona Almond flavor here in particular - DELICIOUS! Everyone is making a fuss about Salt and Straw right now, which is good, but I think the actual ice cream here is a little better. Plus, they still have unique flavors (Not as unique as Salt and Straw, but at the end of the day dont you just want something simple and delicious vs. interesting and mediocre?) I had the Marcona Almond two weeks ago and I cant stop thinking about it. I plan to go buy a pint of it tonight! (Daily happy hour 4-6 pm, pints are $4!) Also, the lady at the counter was very friendly and kept suggesting flavors for me to try before I ended up with what I wanted. Plus its right across from Jameson park so you can enjoy your cone or bowl there and get some quality dog watching in. What on earth could make for a better afternoon?

Stopped by for some ice cream after eating at the nearby Piazza Italia. Although people are always talking about Salt and Straw we chose to give this place a chance at the recommendation of our local friends, and I have to say, I really enjoyed this place. They had a bunch of unique flavors including a horchata one that I really enjoyed. What I would say impressed me the most about this place was just the fact that the worker was so patient with us and didn’t really complain that we wanted to sample so many of their flavors and didn’t end up buying that many ourselves. Service like this is truly invaluable and I really appreciated that the lady was okay with us trying their many flavors, because they WERE really unique, and I honestly had no idea how most of them would taste!

With Salt and Straw up the road, I sometimes forget about Cool Moon. These days I am starting to prefer going to cool moon. The reason is because of the never ending line at S&S. Even with the pint trick where you can jump the line, there are times I just want to get a scoop or two of Ive cream. Cool moon can provide me my wish. Plus their ice cream is very good. I always enjoy my regular flavors like cookies n cream, cookie dough, chocolate, vanilla, or mint chocolate chip. All of these flavors were very tasty. After you get your Ive cream, you can head into the park. In fact you might just do that anyway as the shop is on the smaller side. Only three or four tables for two, which will fill up on warm summer evenings.

Unique selection of flavors, good quality & service. It was fairly busy when we went & the staff were very patient, even with most customers wanting to try flavors (which I understand as some of them were odd enough that I couldnt have told you what they were!)... Im sure that they appreciated my husband & me knowing what we wanted, tho. ;) While the ice cream is small-batch & of good quality, I found the taste to be a bit lackluster. I got a scoop of mint chip & Belgian chocolate & neither were bursting with flavor as Id expect. My husband thought his was awesome (something cherry vanilla). But I would still go back.

Located in the Pearl District and very near the fun Jamison Square Park is a great ice cream place that has many ice cream flavors. We ordered the salted caramel and the buttermilk marionberry ice creams that were served in a biodegradable cup. Both flavors were rich, and delicious! We sat down in the park and enjoyed our ice cream to cool us down since the weather was hot (in the 90s). Unique flavors and great quality marks a good ice cream spot. We were thankful it wasnt super packed and there was no huge line but we could imagine one if the circumstances were different...like maybe after dinner.

I really liked this place at onetime. Usto go here almost every other day to buy their happy hour ice cream, today I was late by 5 minutes and they denied me their happy hour menu. Which is totally ridiculous to me so, they could keep their happy hour ice cream and I will not be going to them anymore. Terrible customer service. I am a regular customer and they couldnt spare me 5 minutes. And to top it off I live in the neighborhood, thank you for your wonderful Pearl business.

I used to work at an ice cream shop. One of my favorite things was to mix in as much cinnamon as was humanly possible to plain vanilla, in hopes of creating cinnamon ice cream. Those days are gone because Cool Moon has insanely good cinnamon ice cream, no mixing by me required. In addition they always have a ton of other flavors, from the normal to the unique. And the employees never seem mad when I ask for a half dozen tastes before making up my mind.

Like most artisanal ice cream joints in this town, dont be surprised if theres a wait at primetime, though nothing approaching the madness of Salt & Straw. The ice cream is delicious and they have a wide variety of flavors, not as many as s&s but considerably more than fiftyfifty. Prices aint a steal but decent by comparison to most. Location with outdoor seats and adjacent to a park are a plus.

I was in town visiting my boyfriend and we happened upon this place while trying to find our way around downtown. I first tried the iced chai tea flavor ice cream and it had me hooked. we ended up coming back. The flavors are great, the people are cool, and the park next to it is a perfect place to enjoy some ice cream and people watching. Definitely recommend and look forward to the next visit.

Great array of dairy and nondairy treats. Open late in the summer and their chocolate covered bananas? Yes, please & thank you! Dont let the vibe fool you, the flavors arent your standard vanilla - they are creative and tasty. Very family friendly, but couples and singles will feel welcome as well. Small seating area, but really how long was that ice cream gonna last anyway?

Tasty non-traditional ice cream flavors without the rabid following or hype surrounding other local joints. You wont find totally off the wall flavors, but theres always a good offering of seasonal semi-savory options and they do a good job of rotating through flavors. Really nice to grab a cone and then sit in the park across the street on a hot summer night.

As with other gourmet ice cream shops, the ice cream at Cool Moon is handmade and you can sample to your hearts delight. The shop is small, but strategically located next to a park, making for an enjoyable experience. the single scoop in a cone for $3.50 is a great deal, though $7.50 for an average sized milkshake seems a bit steep.
