If you like a good doughnut that is very unique but dont like customer service, then the Eugene Voodoo Doughnut is the place for you. We drove 30 miles (one-way) just to try them tonight. When we arrived there was a bit of a line which wasnt a big deal but when we got to the front of the line we were greeted with a "cash only" sign. Seriously?! Then I tried to ask the guy if there was an ATM nearby but he just walked away with no acknowledgement to the people in line and stood a few feet away while a female employee proceeded to tell him a story about something that they both apparently found very amusing. When story time was over he came back, again with no acknowledgement whatsoever. As first timers, we asked a couple of questions about what we could buy but most of our questions were just answered with "nope, thatll cost more." Apparently this guy has had as much salesmanship training as he has had customer service training. By this point I no longer cared what we ordered so my wife just ordered the Voodoo Dozen. Right as he is about to ring us up, the funny female comes back, cuts in, and starts ringing something else up on the register. I decided to walk away before I said something I might regret and a couple of minutes later, my wife walks out of the store to tell me that we now have to go find exact change because apparently they crashed the register and now our $20 bill is no longer acceptable. If not for my wifes determination to try one of these doughnuts, wed have been long gone but fortunately there was a restaurant nearby that she was able to go into and get the $11.25 that we needed. Finally, the guy at the counter apologized for the inconvenience and handed us our order. We drove back home and tried them. Yeah, theyre good, but what doughnut isnt? What the staff needs to understand is that we didnt drive a 60 mile round trip for a tasty doughnut. We drove there for the experience that goes along with it. It doesnt matter how unique or kitschy or whatever your product is if it doesnt come with good customer service. Thats what makes the difference between a fun, destination experience and a disappointing waste of our evening. I hope that our bad experience was as unique as their doughnuts but based on what I saw in the staff, I doubt it. By the way, for future reference, a couple of free doughnuts thrown in as an apologetic gesture wouldnt make up for everything but it would probably have stopped me from coming straight home to write this review.

It was the 4th of July, 2017. After vigourously scouring the downtown area of Eugene for a decent view of the fireworks, my friends and I were weak with starvation. We stumbled toward the soft pink light coming from the corner. Behold, the notorious the Voodoo Donut was not only open, but the delicious aroma of pastry sustenance drew us in Like some doughy magnetism. We walked in feeling slightly fatigued and overwhelmed by the pristine works of donut art on display. As if he sensed our hesitation, the staff member on duty welcomed us and told us he would be taking good care of me and my companions. He was our Savior. And his name was Julian. He swiftly calmed our overwhelmed senses reassuring us that our glutinous needs would be satiated. He even politely complimented my partners pantaloons: referring to them as "sweet trousers", so we knew he was a really classy guy. Feeling our confidence surging we forged ahead into the icing and topping filled jungle with Julian as our steadfast guide. Chocolate! Maple! Oreos! Whats that!? Captain Crunch!? BACON!!! The box quickly filled with our doughy salvation. Julian, tireless and delightful Willy Wonka of do-nuttery, cheered us on. Before we knew it, we were two dozen deep in sugar savagery. In a whirl of joyous disbelief we were out the door, blessing our soverign sweet nations stars for giving us a place like Voodoo Donut, and a gentlemen named Julian. God Bless America.

If you want to skip the long-winded rant, the summary is that they are delicious donuts and you should go there. For the rest, here goes nothing. They have extremely unusual Donuts. I mean bizarre stuff that I dont think people would normally put in their mouth. Like something topped with tang for example. Powdered Tang? Does that sound right to you? What about Captain Crunch? Also putting Meats on a Donuts sounds counterintuitive, and yet these places have people in lines going down the street and around the corner waiting for them to open up. How is it that they could throw things together so weird and so disgusting that it looks like a child had done it, and yet it sounds really good right off the bat and everybody wants to eat it and they keep coming back for more? Ill tell you exactly why. Voodoo. Its in the name! They use voodoo magic to make their donuts delicious! Theyre using voodoo magic to get you to come back again and again! Not that Im judging. Im not a religious bigot or anything, in fact Im going to eat another Voodoo Donuts because it is really delicious.

Even if you dont like doughnuts, you have to experience Voodoo doughnuts. Having been to the Portland and Eugene locations, Id say the Portland store has a little bit more soul in it but the Voodoo attitude and unmistakable flavor remains the same. Impractical flavors and exotic pastry experiments make up the heart of Voodoos menu and fame, granting it an unmistakable reputation as the place youve got to try at least once. If there is a minor disclaimer to be had, its that Voodoo means business. Theres a lot of hustle and bustle both in front of and behind the counter. Voodoo is NOT your average coffee shop and theres a clear directive to either get things done or stay out of the way until youre ready. Its not hostility, its just fast paced. The uninitiated expecting a mellow space to gawk at the menu may find themselves put off by the flow of traffic.

The doughnuts are definitely great doughnuts. Best doughnuts in town forsure. However the staff is not NEARLY as good as the staff at the downtown Portland location. They dont greet people when they walk in. I was there 2 days ago and the dude working the front was SO SLOW I couldnt believe it. There were only 2 people in front of me and it took me over 10 minutes to get a freaking doughnut. The people in front of me wanted a sweatshirt and so he walked like a sloth to the back of the store to get it. No sense of urgency whatsoever and they dont value their customers time. Plus on top of that the music playing in the store was absolutely awful. Terrible music. Makes me not want to go back. The only reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because their doughnuts are the best. TIME TO HIRE A NEW STAFF.

A good place to grab unique doughnuts at a reasonable price. I cant imagine enjoying them there though — the music was so extremely loud I could hardly hear myself think, let alone decide which ones to buy. Turn it down please. On the whole Im glad I stopped in, but dont let the hype get you too excited. It is a tad gimmicky — breakfast cereal on doughnuts, or other oddities. Their apple fritter was good, but Ive had better. Mine was a tad on the tough side and would have loved it to be more soft and the apples and sauce on it to be a bit more saucy. Still, a decent place to hit up on an early morning drive.
