After living in numerous states across the country, I can honestly say that the atmosphere and vibe you get when you walk into Muddys is the bees knees. One of the best. Why do you ask? Well let me tell you: 1. The entire staff is super friendly. Like down to earth, know your name, remember your drink, ask you about your day friendly. Beth, Ben, Molls, Chels, and the rest of the gang are always there, rain or shine, to feed your daily caffeine addiction. And they are all super adorable, so thats great too! 2. Its a great place to run into people. Social interaction is what keeps us going and what better than to grab a cup of your favorite beverage and chat with friends and people you dont get to see everyday. Its great to have a place in this lil town where you know you will leave with a smile. 3. 9 times out of 10 you will run into one of the super rad owners there. You will see Audra behind the counter whipping up something amazing (Did I mention that she makes their baked goods from scratch?!) or John roasting the coffee (and coming up with his own creations like bourbon barrel infused coffee!) while chatting with customers. Where else do you actually get to chat with the owners? Those two. They work their tushs off on the daily and their hard work definitely does not go unnoticed! 4. I come for the tea, I dont even drink coffee. BUT if my body allowed me the honor, Muddys would be my coffee of choice! Thats how much I friggen love this place, the staff and the crazy awesome owners! <3

In 2008, I began dating my now husband, who is originally from Elizabeth City. I was from Charleston, SC and used to charming, delicious coffee houses with locally roasted expresso and coffees. I was bummed at first thinking there couldnt possibly be delicious non-Starbucks coffee in such a small city. Low and behold, my mother-in-law brought me by this place, telling me how she goes nearly every day. I was beyond impressed! Great coffees roasted in house and espresso beans! Also there are nearly 20 different blends of their whole bean coffee available to buy in bulk. As it turns out, I got stationed in Elizabeth City in 2012 and applied for a part time job with Muddys to help pay off my student loans. Despite my limited availability, John and Audra Marx very kindly gave a me a job on the spot. As I began working there, I realized why their product was so good: high-quality ingredients, fresh homemade baked goods, friendly, caring, loyal employees and a true love of coffee by all. I was blown away by how honest and dedicated each person was who worked there. I immediately loved them all and their passion for their work and pride in maintaining a good business. Overall Muddys is a joy to be a customer at and also a wonderful business to work for. I cant wait to come back!

TERRIBLE customer service!!!!!!!!!!! I was there for a first Friday event (an art event downtown Elizabeth city) and was completely ignored when i came in for coffee. i could have understood that if there were actually paying customers in the store but there were not. there was one large/overweight dirty blond curly haired girl behind the counter making drinks and handing them out to her friends whom she was talking with as if i was not there. in total there were 6 people in the store - me being one of them. the large drink maker was talking to her 3 friends and giving them drinks (for free) and a thin brown haired girl who was cleaning - she at least said "hey" when she walked by me with a handful of trash and her head down but that was the extent of them acknowledging a PAYING customer. it was ridiculous - i stood there for at least 10 minutes and then walked out WITHOUT getting anything. I hope the OWNER reads this and talks with his employees - especially about what they were hired to do, so when there is business maybe they will actually sell drinks not give them away to friends.

The coffee is ALWAYS great. I visit this coffee house every time Im in Elizabeth City and the coffee has been consistently good for three past 10 years or so since theyve opened. The bulk coffee is fresh and their hot brews are strong and fresh as well. Some coffee houses have a bitter finish and others Ive been to have espresso shots that for some reason are not eye opening, but Muddy Waters has great flavors and perky brews (kind of why were going to a coffee house in the first place, right?!) and their lattes, cappucinos, breves, Americanos, and whatever else you order is a full cup. Some places leave a LOT of room even though you probably arent adding cream after ordering a blended drink. Pastries are fresh and delicious, smoothies and cold blended coffee drinks are great, the wifi is free for an hour(unusually short), and the decor is high end and comfortable (unlike the many coffee houses that are homey). Outdoor seating was added and has umbrellas for a nice, outdoor setting.

Muddy Waters batistas are properly trained and execute that training every day. No push button espresso machine here. If you order a cappuccino, guess what? You wont get a latte. Youll actually get a cappuccino. The coffee is locally roasted. Yum. Fresh. The iced coffee is of the Japanese brewing method (I looked it up out of curiosity, not wanting to think any other method was as good as cold brew) which I now prefer. You add about 10% more coffee to the brew, and brew it over ice to prevent oxidation that occurs when coffee is brewed hot then chilled over time (example: put in the fridge). The staff is cool, the place is cool, the customers are cool. A gem in an otherwise diversity-lacking town. I say that with love. I live here, dont I?

Best coffee around! My husband was stationed in Elizabeth City 2 years ago and we loved going to this coffeehouse. When we moved we were very upset that the local coffeehouses didnt live up to Muddys. We still order coffee from them and get it shipped to us! We really loved the atmosphere and the employees know you by name. We miss the home town feeling, but when my husband has to go back to Elizabeth City for advance schooling every once in a while he is still greeted by the employees warmly who still remember him!

I have been visiting Muddys for over ten years, when in the area visiting my daughter. Lately I have been venturing out of my coffee comfort zone and have found the Chai Latte a huge hit (I order it dirty with espresso). I can also say that the last time I was in I had a strawberry fit lite smoothy that was out of this world. So wether you want amazing coffee, chai, or smoothies, MUDDYs ROCKS them all. It also helps that they have free wifi, clean bathrooms, and helpful staff! Love this place!

Their reputation speaks for itself. High quality roasts and drinks. One of the Elizabeth City gems. As far as the atmosphere is concerned it has everything you love about a coffee shop with very small doses of the annoying things that arent worth even mentioning. Anyone visiting the area should definitely stop by and have a cup. Theres really no comparison.
