3 strikes...IM DONE!!! about a month ago i used my debit card to purchase a coffee beverage and added a generous tip on the receipt. when the final total was debited from my checking account, i noticed that beyu had entered an incorrect, larger amount. the amount that i was overcharged wasnt huge, but i wanted to make sure that this wouldnt be an ongoing issue. i called and spoke with someone (jen? i really dont recall) who asked for the amount, the last 4 of my account number and the type of card. she told me that they would correct it, but they never did. strike one... (by the way, im not even going to penalize them for the fact that the amount i would pay for this beverage was different each time i ordered it.) last weekend i took an out-of-town visitor to beyu to grab coffee and listen to some live music to show her what durham had to offer. we stood very patiently at the "please wait to be seated" sign for almost 5 minutes during which time 3 employees looked at us and kept going about their business. it wasnt until another couple joined the waiting line that someone finally acknowledged us and then told us to seat ourselves. huh...? well what was the point of standing there? strike two... we grabbed our own menus from the counter and finally seated ourselves. our waitperson was VERY kind, apologetic, and attentive. she offered us complimentary beverages, etc to make up for the initially poor service (which we had not requested, but appreciated the gesture). id forgotten about the 2 prior FAILS and was willing to give beyu a clean slate (even though my coffee beverage was just lukewarm). but then as we were leaving, the woman with short brown hair behind the bar sealed their fate... she asked in a not-so-nice tone "did you pay your bill???" so wait...the same person who was too busy in the beginning to acknowledge our presence while we were waiting to be seated (yes, she was 1 of the initial 3 employees who just looked at us without so much as a "hello, well be right with you) suddenly had enough time to address us? and with this tone and nonsense??? strike three.... i really wanted to like this place, but they will not get anymore of my business.

My husband and I were here last night for their New Years Eve Celebration. We purchased tickets online about a week or so before the event, at $30 per person and they also required each person to purchase at least $25 worth of food and drink. Im not sure how they decide to seat people in which seats, but they decided to seat us in the very front of the cafe right in front of the glass door behind the bar at a little glass table and two small chairs. The jazz band was all the way on the opposite end of the cafe so when we sat down, could not see a thing. The worst part was that it was freezing cold air constantly blowing through the cracks right next to our table. It seemed like a little space they just decided to put a table just to try and fit two extra people. We asked to be moved to another table, and they were not accommodating AT ALL!!! They told us we would have to ask other people if we could switch and there were no other tables they could seat us at even though we arrived thirty minutes before the show started, and other tables were clearly available. Sometimes I feel that these places will overbook and do anything to make a buck. For the money we were going to spend, I felt it was bad customer service. The manager did not even apologize. We asked for a refund and decided to go somewhere else. Please do better!!

Came here with a friend for lunch on Sunday. We were seated within 10 mins but then waited almost an hour with no food. The food when it finally showed up was disappointing. 30 mins or so after ordering I was told that there were no more biscuits or croissants for the Breakfast Sandwich Id ordered so I went with the offered ciabatta option instead of changing my order in the hopes that we wouldnt have to wait much longer as we had somewhere we had to be soon. But it was another 20 mins or so before we finally got my sandwich, my friends shrimp and grits and the beignets. The beignets were hot and delicious. My sandwich was just eggs and a smattering of melted shredded cheese on a plain ciabatta. Cant complain too much as it was only $6 and I had agreed to go with the ciabatta. However, my friend said her shrimp and grits was lukewarm and didnt taste fresh. In summary, I really would have appreciated some indication that we were in for a long wait so we could have chosen another place that would have worked with our time frame. I can see this place being good for deserts but would avoid getting meals here.

Came here with my best friend and ordered the catfish po boy with a side salad, it was delicious. My friend order a panini which was good also, until she realized they didnt hold the mayo. It seemed like after this the service went down hill. I tried to ask the person who brought my food out for extra salad dressing and she cut me off mid sentence stating that there was already dressing on the salad, which there was not. My friend told our waitress that there was mayo on her panini and she said that they would make her a completely new plate but when her food came out she had a new sandwich and the same fries from her previous plate, which were of course cold now. Midway through our meal I just so happened to look down and there were ants feasting on what looked like old food that had been left behind and there was also hair around our table. I told the waiter and she was very nonchalant about it and when it was time to pay our waitress just came by and dropped our tabs on the table, no "have a nice day" "come back and see us" nothing! I loved the food, but the service was very poor. Definitely wont be back!

I have now been to the Beyu Cafe on four separate occasions and had four very different meals. All four have absolutely blown me away. Im currently nursing the best Shrimp & Grits Ive ever tasted - I couldnt wait until after I left to write a review. The Beyu Cafe is a real gem in a town that occasionally mistakes hype and trend for quality food and service. The staff here are consistently warm and inviting, and the table and bar service is world class. The food is undeniably some of the best in Durham - and probably the country. The atmosphere is hip but also genuine - you feel somehow at home at these little tables, even as a pianist turns up the class with live jazz just a few feet away. The Beyu is an oddity as you can grab a coffee and sit with your laptop to finish up some work or dress up and impress the pants off of a date. Its versatility is astounding, but it does it all with ease and expertise. Im hooked!

TERRIBLE food and lackluster service. This was my first time trying out this place and the food (at least the dish I had) was not good. I ordered the Thai curry vegetables that was supposed to be served with rice. Instead what I got was a Thai curry broth with the rice in the broth. The rice was overcooked and undercooked at the same time. The waiter was slow at providing service and he never even asked me if I like or dislike my food. He just took the whole plate of food away. So, I am assuming, its customary for patrons not to eat their food. If I owned a restaurant and a guess did not eat his or her food, I would want to know why? Also, I ordered a beignets and again, bad! I have been to New Orleans and this was one of the worst beignets I had the displeasure of trying! I do not not recommend this place and I have no intention of ever going back there again. $20 wasted and I am still hungry!!!!!!
