Store is beautifully decorated and conveniently located right on the Main strip. With Christmas in two weeks I decided to part with an old wedding band from a failed marriage and gold chain from a girlfriend of many years ago for some extra cash. My ex purchased the wedding band from high-end jewelry retailer Ben Bridge in San Diego, which features chocolate-covered strawberries in the lobby and personalized concierge service. The ring is 14K gold with a setting of four nearly flawless diamonds. She paid $1,800 for the wedding band in 2001 and I had the receipt in my pocket when I went to Clarkstown Coin & Jewelry. Not sure of the weight of the thick, braided 24K gold chain, but as of today gold is offered at >$1,200 p/ounce on the commodities exchange. When I walked in I was greeted by Jessica, who was all-business in immediately appraising the gold chain, which I appreciated. Then, she turned the appraisal of the wedding band over to Seth, who seemed to be having a bad day. Without even acknowledging me, he turned to Jessica and announced they would be closing the shop early for unknown reasons. They offered me $150 for the wedding band from Ben Bridge and $120 for the gold chain. I thought the price of gold/diamonds would have increased over the years but I guess I was wrong. I also guess, after what I witnessed in a two-minute stop at a local jewelry store, that Im in the wrong business--seems like pretty high markups on jewelry these days. The reprehensible valuations could be just the way it is, though I suspect it was more of a failed rip-off attempt. However, the poor customer service is inexcusable. CC&J has what it takes to be a little "gold mine." Unfortunately, they really need to turn inward to fix whatever may be ailing them. Its certainly not a lack of profits.
