Do not go here for your lumber needs. They may have what you are looking for, but the staff is unbelievably rude. When you ask basic questions, they get heated and talk to you like you are five years old. Once, I called and asked them a very simple question "Do you carry any wood posts that are 3" x 3"?" I knew before I called that it was not a standard wood size, but I wanted to ask anyway just in case they had some. Firstly, I was transferred blindly from one department to another without even being told I was being transferred. Then, the guy answers like this: "Yeah?" So I asked again, "Do you carry any wood posts that are 3" x 3"?" He starts laughing and then says: "That is not even a standard wood size." Well, of course its not, Sherlock. Its an odd number. I already know its not standard. That was not my question. My question was "Do you or do you not carry 3" x 3" posts?" So he continues, "No, youre not going to find those anywhere. We could maybe cut a 4" x 4" down to that size but were still going to charge you for the 4" x 4" so..." So I said, "Fine, I can just look elsewhere then. Thanks anyway." He continues further: "Why cant you just use a 2" x 2" or a 4" x 4"?" I answer: "Because I am working on a very specific garden project that requires 3" x 3" posts. Thats the size I need." He laughs again and then replies: "Well I still dont see why you need that size specifically." I said: "Nevermind. Have a good day." and then hung up because I simply could not stand listening to him any longer. I mean, I asked this same question at Lowes, Home Depot and Menards and the staff there were never rude about it. They would simply tell me that they dont have it and are very sorry. But the staff at this place seems to think laughing and treating you like you are retarded is a much better method of customer service. So, in summary, no I would not recommend that you go here for your lumber or building needs unless you absolutely must. And even then, I would avoid talking to the staff as much as humanly possible.

I am a homeowner doing a DIY 10x 12 shed. As a female I was initially intimidated going to a lumberyard. My experience was very positive. They took the time to walk me around to show me samples to be sure I was getting what I wanted. At one point I had three employees reviewing my plans and making helpful suggestion on how to build the window and the type and placement of the hinges. I did need to make two additional delivery orders over the phone. These were delivered the next day as promised. In the end the excess nails and wood was graciously taken back for a full refund. The resulting shed is beautiful. Tom, Jason and Matt were particularly helpful. There were two other folks that were also very friendly but I did not get their names. I did have one negative interaction with an older gentleman on the phone. I think he was having a bad day. Also, the delivery charge is less than the local big box even though the big box is closer than Siweks!

Siweks customer service representative is simply defined as horrific. My husband and I went to siwek to return some lumber because we bought a little more than we needed for our home. The lumber guy was mean to us. There was no smile on his face. He looked angry, like he was about to start a fight. His voice was mean, unwelcoming, and his tone was rough. We simply wanted to return the unused lumbers. He took one look and refused to give us a refund. We took our lumbers and walked out, swearing never to return to a store where we are not welcomed. He simply woke up on the wrong side of the bed and we were simply there at the wrong time.He did not have to be so rude to us. We are good customers. We lived in the area and the store was convenient for us. But, because of the lumber guys horrific customer service, we will certainly take our business elsewhere where we are welcomed. We have shared our bad experiences with our friends and neighbors.

The kind of lumber & hardware store that will make you go out of your way to be reminded of that warmy, fuzzy perhaps-a-bit-nostalgic-feeling for a time I wasnt alive during (under 30) that keeping it local & family owned can offer the hardware store wanderer. Ive gone in there with an idea and rough list of supplies for a project and came out with the hardware and even *the lumber cut into desired lengths for me.* The first time I wandered in, I was surprised by the free coffee and even more surprised by an employee asking me how he can help, get me on my way and where I can find it. While Home Depot, Menards or Ace have their all-encompassing "lets buy everything for our entire house" niche, for me, Siweks has been the real helpful place. Despite my over-dependence on google maps Ive only felt compelled to write one or two reviews over the past 4yrs. And the fact that I am writing a review alone says something.

The lumber selection is pretty good. Ive shopped here primarily for the hardwood selection for furniture building. They have a good mix and prices are ok. I dont like that they "mill" the lumber. Most of what I bought has significant snipe as if they are passing stock through a cheap portable planer haphazardly. So it becomes expensive when I either have to plane the stock in my shop or remove the ends to avoid the snipe. For a place with millwork in its name, I would expect more on that front. I would much rather buy rough sawn stock at a cheaper price (since I end up remilling it anyway) or have them properly surface the faces and edges in the first place. In any event its worth checking them out if you build furniture, but just be prepared to deal with snipe.

RB - I guess some have mighty thin skin huh. lol Of course what he said if correct and factual - I have had them mill to my specs many things over the years and always been happy with them. So no RB - they do not "carry" them. They offered to make them. Why did that rattle you? Weird .... you very weird. My beefs with Siweks are few - not the easiest to find things but all I need to do is ask, the yard gets messed up with boards mis-piled but that is by the lazy customers tossing things anywhere they want, and fact that when on sale things get picked thru fast....but that is every where too. They blow away the BORGs like HD and Lowes and Menards on cedar, dont have the quality of Sherer but at 30% of the price thats okay.

Since Sherer Bros. left N MPLS Siwek and Youngblood are the last "real" lumber yards in the area. Yeah, some of the guys are impatient with homeowners and DIYers because they are used to working with contractors that know what they want and where to find it. They are set up for doind large orders, custom doors and millwork, hardwood species, and specialty building materials. If you want a couple of 2x4s, some bushes, and crappy paint, go to the Home Depot. If you want a complete project delivered of quality building materials and top-notch custom shop work, call Siwek every time.
