Im giving this store one star because the system wont allow me to give it any less. Years ago, back in the day of Oxford Books, I also enjoyed shopping at Richards Variety until they sold me several items of inferior quality, including a mop that broke in half after 2 uses; the manager refused to exchange it or refund my money even though I presented my receipt. He went out of his way to be rude to me for no reason, in front of a store full of Christmas shoppers + so I avoided the place for years, until today, when I made the mistake of giving Richards a second chance - silly me. My shopping experience quickly went from bad to worse: every item I found was not quite right in some way or other. While I was trying to stay focused, a man with a sharp voice was barking at someone in a back room. As I looked for something on a large display, an employee kept crossing in front of me, despite all the room there was in the aisle and this giant never once apologized for disrupting my line of vision, nor did he offer assistance. Third, a rude female with arms akimbo offered "to help" and then very sharply told me I should look at the nearby hardware store. When I said, politely, that I intended to after I paid for the items in my hands she told me "the cashier is up front" - in a tone that implied that I never would have thought in a million years how to find the clerk. I paid for the items even though nothing I had selected was quite right - I was only trying to be nice and buy a few things more out of pity than anything else - but the final straw came as I stepped out onto the sidewalk. The unhelpful female was making a large cloud of cigarette smoke - still smarting from her earlier lack of savoir faire, I said, "That isnt good for you." I meant to also say, "Your second hand smoke isnt good for me either" but I refrained and walked away. Then I heard her make a remark about my mother! I turned around, moved closer, and asked her to repeat: her point was that Southerners are too polite to make personal comments. In all my travels, I have found quite the reverse: About half the Southerners Ive encountered are polite and the other half are ruder than just about anyone on the planet. And just what was so polite about Southern slavery? Well, if she wants to cook her lungs, so be it. I went to the hardware store, made a purchase, and looked back toward Richards where I could see her smoke hanging about like a storm cloud. As I approached Richards, I could smell cigarette smoke all the way down to the food shop. When I stepped inside Richards, this female was in full retreat at the far back of the store, watching me. What was I doing? Returning every item I had just purchased! The Asian clerk was quite sweet. I apologized for having to return everything but I told her if Richards has no concern for its customers and the concept of good will, then it will have to do without my business. I am sure, after reading other comments posted here and reflecting on my bad experienceS plural, that Richards way of doing business is like smoking - a slow but certain death. Yes, Richards carries a number of hard to find items and the place recalls childhood, but do we need to revisit the bullies of childhood too?

Nice store, consistently bad service. I remember going to this store as a little girl, as young as 10 or 12. Go there only for the items. Do not expect politeness from anyone. Its common to hear the manager/owner yell over the shop rows to get employees attention. Ive been followed throughout the store on multiple occasions. They stock the store with toys but show suspicion and annoyance with children. Whoever the owner is of this place, theyve kept it running the same since I was a child myself, for better and for worse.

Here we go with another small store that thinks all A- American steal. I went into this store maybe two weeks ago. I was followed down every section of the store. Today my wife gave them another chance.....guess what....the same thing. People, get it together....the items are so cheap, who would want to steal. It is 2009 .....sad...will the world ever change. Get cameras....oh I am sorry....can you afford it????
