Situated into a narrow staircase, which is the privately owned but public property of the Hyatt Hotel, Ruth Asawas San Francisco Fountain is flanked by the towering hotel and a glassy Apple store. Across the street from the fountain are high end department stores. The Union Square area has become a somewhat glamorous shopping mecca, attracting many tourists with designer stores and three star hotels. San Francisco Fountain maintains a contrasting charm and age which speaks to a different time, through aged bronze and a playful sculptural style. The giant, round fountain rises from the staircase. The tall walls of the fountain are embellished with eccentric sculpted scenes from different San Francisco neighborhoods. A bronze dragon is shown marching through Chinatown. Beautiful property along the city’s oceanfront, such as the historic Cliff House, are commemorated. The fountain also shows a protest, with the tiny engraved protestor’s signs claiming a range of topics which hint at the age of the fountain, such as Vietnam and peace. There are countless small scenes and hundreds of tiny figures acting out the narratives on the fountain’s walls, honoring both the people and neighborhoods which make San Francisco unique. Ruth Asawa was born in 1926. Shew grew up on a farm in Norwalk, California, with her Japanese immigrant parents. Asawa cites her first interests in art has having been found in the Sanita Anita internment camp, where her family was held for six months during the Japanese American Internment. There, the older Japanese taught her how to draw, which became a daily routine for her. Her interests in art were further developed when she attended the reputable Black Mountain College, where she studied with other notable artists. Asawa would later move to San Francisco and join the San Francisco Arts Commission, where she lobbied on issues having to do with art and accessibility in regards to children. She co-founded the Alvarado School Arts Workshop, which brought professional artists to classrooms and engaged children in art projects. In 1982, Asawa helped found a public art high school in San Francisco, which was later renamed in her legacy to the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of Arts. Asawa’s fountains are distinctively different, in process and aesthetic, then the artist’s personal work. Her public work consisted of a community oriented process; dough was provided for children to sculpt with, and their figures would be arranged by Asawa and cast in bronze. For San Francisco Fountain, Asawa assembled the gargantuan fountain, nearly ten feet in diameter, out of 18 different bronze plates. From the history of those who contributed to the making of San Francisco Fountain, a shared experience of San Francisco is formed into memory. While looking at the piece, it’s easy to imagine the San Francisco of 1973, before Apple, and before gentrification which changed many of the neighborhoods shown on the fountain. When the Apple store presented plans for their building design in 2013, the designers had mysteriously left out the fountain, which resulted in strong public back lash. While public art tends to come and go, and often quietly, the San Francisco Fountain’s deep ties to the community inspired an impassioned rallying for it to be preserved in 2013, just three years after the artist had passed away. Apple later presented revised plans which did not remove the fountain but did move it slightly. Curiously, on the Apple website, the fountain is now cited under attractive “features” of the public plaza.

Let me start by saying, that I love Apple and most things they don But I am NEVER going back to this particular store. My first visit was about 2.5 years ago, I was visiting a friend in SF when my computer started acting up. I went to Union Sq. store and was told that the problem can be fixed for $300 and itll take up to 5 days. I would totally do that, but thankfully I was flying back east in a day or so. Upon return I brought my machine to NYC store and had it fixed there on the spot for free. This January received a new iPhone as a gift and went to that god forsaken place to activate it. The "genius" there told me itll take 2-3 hours to activate my phone, so I should probably go to AT&T store and do it there. I always activated my iPhones at apple stores and it took about 10 minutes, so I was a bit surprised. I returned 2 days later assuming that I just stumbled across an idiot. Another "genius" was able to activate my phone, but neglected to keep me on my unlimited data plan( because why would I want an unlimited data plan). I ended up spending hours on the phone with AT&T trying to prove I did nothing wrong (I am happy to report that AT&T switched me back). I went to Apple store to bring this situation to managers attention. He said it is unfortunate and offered me an iPhone case. His poorly trained employees almost cost me $120 a month- the only case I would consider taking is the one made out of skin of the Apple person who put me in this position. To sum up, i guess because SF is a tech capital of the world, all able tech people have normal jobs. Apple store here is forced to hire undesirables. Dont go there- they dont know what they are doing.
