I have shopped at Animal Farm for years and I am dismayed by some of the negative reviews that have been written. I love this store and I am extremely loyal, not despite the staff (as some people have commented), but BECAUSE OF them! One of the owners, John, is very helpful and probably the most knowledgeable person Ive ever come across when it comes to all things animal and/or pet related. He has given me advice on everything from how to treat an ear infection to how to get an older cat to eat better to how to ease a puppys separation anxiety. (I find it interesting that in a recent review, the woman commented that she had been a longtime customer, but yet she referred to "the man behind the counter who said his name was John." Well, I dont think anyone who has been patronizing Animal Farm for "years" would NOT know John since I dont think Ive ever been in the store when he WASNT there!) Ive never been treated rudely by ANY of the staff. (Although the parrot behind the counter has told me "good night!" before I was leaving the store....maybe a not so subtle reminder that its time for me to wrap up my visit???) As for the store itself, it has a great selection of products and the prices are very competitive. They carry the highest quality dog and cat food lines, and the cost is the same or lower than youll find at any of the large chain stores (if you can even find the same product). Thats a pretty good deal when you consider how much more a small, locally owned business has to pay for their products in comparison to the wholesale prices that the big-name stores are able to negotiate for themselves! I have a dog and two cats, so Im always buying all sorts of other things in addition to pet food (toys, litter, brushes, shampoo and TREATS), and Ive found those things are almost always less expensive here than anywhere else (even lower than Target). I dont usually write review, but I really wanted to give this store the kudos they deserve.

I have shopped in the Animal Farm store over the last few years with no particular issue with service(not bad, not good). However, today my thirteen year old son walked his dog to the store to buy a small bag of dog food (as the family has for many years). With the purchase and sales tax, my son was 74 cents short on this his first purchase and was turned away without a second thought. As a neighborhood store, I choose to shop here when I could shop at other stores that might be more convenient from time to time. Shop in the neighborhood is my motto---in turn, I expect retail neighbors to be mindful of its community. If your business needs the 74 cents, tell your neighbor to bring the money on his next visit. My son left the store with his dog and returned home to get the 74 cent; and walked back to the store for the food. This is not so good neighbor treatment of a young member of our community. John M.

I like to support local businesses and have spent at least $600 annually on animal food and supplies at Animal Farm for the last 6 years despite periodic bad experiences. As of today, I will never set foot in the store again. The sole employee in the store was helping me in the brand new aquarium section. We already had picked out the right replacement heater for my tank and were discussing the fish I also wished to purchase when the owner came in and, without a word to me, commanded the employee to help another customer who had just come into the store. I assumed (incorrectly), this would be a brief delay. When I finally gave up on buying fish and brought the heater to the counter I mentioned how rude it was to interrupt my transaction to help someone else. Once again, she blew me off; so I left the heater on the counter and will never, ever, do business with them again.

Gentleman clerk, when asked about a cage for a pet that he carries the food for, become oddly weird and very belligerent….he was "offended" at me because I was hoping he could make a suggestion about where to find one….."That pet is no longer popular"…"I have no clue where to get one". Small businesses have been a part of my purchasing choices since adulthood. This is where you have community and helpfulness and a conversation. "Oh, okay, sorry to offend you. You carry the pet food, thought youd know where to get a cage." Yes, "You offended me." I have always chosen this family run business, and been making a choice to support them for 19 years, and been paying more, too. It was a choice I felt was always worth it. After todays rude exchange, I shall never buy from them again. Pet Co. perhaps I was wrong about you...

I was concerned about going here after reading the negative reviews below, but I had a perfectly fine experience with them. A month ago, I called to ask if they had the "furminator" (they did) and to confirm their hours. I went in, and after I walked around the store for a few minutes, the woman behind the counter asked me if I needed assistance. Totally normal experience. I just called them again to ask about some other supplies, and again, they were pleasant on the phone. I agree that it is a "Cute, quirky" store. And they seem to have a lot of items that you may not find in other stores.

It seems like everyone knows that the owner lady is not pleasant at all for some reason (or for no reason.) I just go there to get what my cat needs. I have fed her a particular brand for years. When I moved to East Bay a year ago, I had a really hard time to find this brand. Then I found it in this so-called mean ladys store. Well, she has never been friendly with me, but never been really mean. I just dont talk/chat with her. I pay money, get what I need , and leave. The only thing I am sure about this store is that they carry some great, reliable products.

I only moved to Berkeley 2 years ago and was delighted to discover Animal Farm, closest thing to the feed stores I love back home. Heres what Ive experienced: They do indeed carry the full spectrum of animal foods, accessories and toys. They are indeed very helpful and knowledgeable about products and animals. Their prices are reasonable and affordable for me on a limited budget AND they have those great frequent buyer cards. Hope this balances out some of the negative reviews! I say check them out and see for yourself.

I moved to this neighborhood a couple of years ago. When I adopted my pup about six months ago, I knew he would love Animal Farm. We walk over and the folks behind the counter always have a treat for him and are very kind. We grab our chewies, chuckit balls, and score the frequent buyer points and head off on our walk. Im a big supporter of local independent shops and I am so happy to support Animal Farm. The selection is amazing, the staff are helpful, and my pup loves it.

I have shopped in this store for years, but will never set foot inside it again. Today I went in to try and find a product that would keep my kitty from pulling his claws on the furniture. The man behind the counter, who called himself "John" and claimed to be the owner, was so rude to me that I was simply astounded. I hate to patronize the big chain stores like PetSmart, but it is preferable to being condescend to and treated with utter disregard.
