I would just like to clear some things up... I work at this Petland and I can assure you all that the dogs who come to our store are from HUMAN SOCIETIES. Any dogs who look sickly or sad, what have you, are that way because they have been rescued from bad situations and came to Petland Village of Eastside to find new homes. Now, this isnt the case for ALL Petlands, but at this location, it is. We are NOT a puppy mill (I am an animal lover and very, very against puppy mills). The puppies that we DO have are either rescues from shelters, or have been given to us by people who just cant afford to support puppies. The prices ARE insane for the animals we have, but that is because we have to pay for the costs of ALL of their vet bills (usually), and because were trying to assure that the puppies who are purchased are going places where they can be cared for financially. Its just the companys way of weeding out puppy mill reps. Some people come into these stores looking for animals to add to their bloodlines, so that they can improve their own mills, and then sell the animals for triple the price. Again, I understand that this isnt the case for all Petland locations, and certainly not for all pet stores, but as a Petland employee and also a very, very passionate individual, I know that most of the negative reviews here arent even remotely accurate. Everyone who works at this Petland is very passionate about animals, and quite frankly, we SPOIL the animals here. Every one of us has a private menagerie at our homes! We bring our love of animals into the work-environment and try our best to keep the animals happy and healthy- which is hard! So please... before you profile places like this- get the story right. Dont just chunk everything and everyone into a stereotype. All Petland stores are individually owned- unlike Petco and Petsmart - WHO ARE MILLS (they purchase all of their animals from big companies who only sell via legal contracts- its a mess). Of course there ARE ups and downs to any pet store. Its hard to sell animals, and especially to take care of them. But there are certain guidelines for things like this. If we could just let all of our animals run around in huge enclosures, believe me, we WOULD! But financially, its just not doable. So we do the best that we can with what we have. Just because a place or person sells puppies or kittens does NOT mean they are a mill.

First of all, I have to admit that I also work at this store, so I will admit that I may be somewhat biased toward the positive. But I have also worked with these same individuals when they still carried pure breed or designer dogs. The owners are wonderful people who take every part of the business seriously, especially the care of the animals. We only have dogs and cats from various shelters and rescues. Thats why we not only very seldom have pure breed dogs, most of the time we dont know the breeds that make up the dogs we do have. But we can tell you that for whatever reason, they ended up at a shelter where they may have received only the most basic care- food, water and kennel cleaned once a day sometimes. No, its not the ideal situation for the dogs, which is what most people are most concerned about, but there are things that everyone who complains can do to help us with finding these dogs homes. Just ask any associate. We are always accepting donations of products that the shelters can use to help care for the animals. This decreases the money they have to spend on products and can put into expanding care of the dogs, etc. Some of our employees have even left jobs where they made more money, had better benefits, or just didnt have to spend every morning doing something like cleaning up animal feces, to work here. So, instead of lumping all Petlands together, why dont you come and visit us. You can even specifically come and ask for me- I will gladly answer any questions you may have.

i dont know anything at all about the dogs in petland, but i am into small rodents. rats in particular. after looking all over the area for somewhere that sells bucs, i found petland! they obtain their rats from individuals in the area who hand raise them. i have owned rats that were either meant to be feeders or were much older, such as rats donated, found or never bought. many of them are very antisocial and never warm up to you from lack of interaction or traumatic experiences. i went to the petland in robinson township to get my newest buc. he is about 2 months old and within two days, is already taking food from my hands. he was exceptionally friendly right off the bat and shows no behavioral abnormalities. the woman who took him out of the cage for me was very knowledgeable and friendly. had there been more bucs that were not already sold, i would have taken them all. maybe the petland on penn ave is worse, but i highly recommend the one in robinson township. and as far as the dogs go, when i was in there, i had to walk past the dogs to get to the rats. as well as the cats. all the animals were extremely friendly and playful and the place was very clean.

To summarize a long story: we walked in to buy a pair of rats. They didnt have much to choose from, but there was an adorable little critter the sales lady told us was a very young rat. It was caged alone, which made us feel really sorry for it, since rats are social creatures. So we left with it intent on getting it a friend later. They did not sell us a young rat. They sold us a mouse. A very cute mouse that is now our pet, but nevertheless, a mouse. Which didnt make us feel any better about it being in a cage by itself; if anything, mice are even more social than rats. So we would have felt like crap returning it. Weve re-homed her from the ridiculously oversized rat habitat we initially put her in (going "Are you sure thats a baby rat? I REALLY think thats a mouse! Naw, surely they knew what they were selling us, didnt they?" the entire time) and put her in our late hamsters cage, where she seems quite happy. So, to recap: they failed to correctly identify the species of the animal we purchased, which we purchased in part because we felt bad about the conditions it was being kept under. If that isnt the basis for a one-star review, nothing is.

I dont get all the hatred here, but since most of the bad reviews are from 2 yrs ago, allow me to give an updated one. I feed my Dane high quality dog food - taste of the wild, and they are one of the only places that carry it. At first I really didnt want to use Petland as they obtain their dogs and cats through unethical means (puppy mills), but I was out of dog food and Dog Stop had already closed (they are the only other place that carry my food) I went in and was pleasantly surprised that this particular Petland does NOT get their animals from puppy mills. They house dogs and cats from locals shelters and apparently they do very well in placing them. I was very relieved, and from then on have gotten my food there to support a store that helps rescues. Ive never before encountered rude staff. They are ALWAYS very knowledgable and always ask me if they can help me. They help me find EXACTLY what Im looking for and suggest products. It seems they have taken previous reviews into consideration and changed the way they handle customer service - to their credit. I really enjoy coming here and walk out with much more than I need.
