I owe a debt to this shop for making it clear in only a few secondsd just how important my business is to them . Bottom line: it turns out by refusing an exchange that cost me about $3 in gas alone plus time, I had to return a toilet snake that did not work right for me in order to exchange it for one that would be about $1.28 more. My sense was I was returning a product that did not function well and wanted to make a straight exchange. The crucial point would be $1.28. Now, its not as if Im a stranger to the place and ordinarily would only turn to their people and shelves for my needs. But now Ive been educated as it required an assembly of about three people to decide to refuse my exchange, the decision about which was made by a tall sandy haired gentleman who seemed to have the power to make a $1.28 decision that would cost them my usual and eventual business. He had to be called because the very reliable cashier with whom I would always deal was required to get the heavy artillery for such a decision. There was polite and direct conversation at the register that would have been right on were we discussing a tractor or lawn mower of some substantial cost. No, we were simply talking about a longstanding customer who simply felt he(I)had a case for a straight exchange. Well, you got to know there was serious stirring of thought and philosophy going on in the mind of the apparent responsible person. Soon I reached for my wallet and change and produced the serious change with the serious authority figure commanding the reliable cashier to take the money being offered. Shyly, though, she took the money, and the yearly financials of Bainbridge Islands one ACE Hardware establishment were brought into order, and I sincerely thank the assemblage for clarifying my status with them so I do not have to battle traffic anymore at that intersection to get to them.

At first you get disappointed by the size of the store and their lack of a *super* wide selection, but like most Ace Hardware stores what they *do* have is good quality and you can order anything online that you would want and have it shipped to the store, which only takes 2 or 3 days. For me thats a life saver with small kids there are few times that I could pack up and spend 2 or 3 hours going to the nearest home depot (almost 30 minutes away in paulsbo) to get simple parts. Sure they dont have large lumber, but the pro-build across the street does. The staff is courteous and smart, and remember your name and in some cases the past tasks youve done. The store is always well staffed and unlike a home depot Im only a poke out an aisle or a few steps and I have someone whose knows the answer *or* can quickly get someone for me. Prices are usually compeditive for small things, on bigger things, power tools etc you can tell they are making up some margin, but nothing horrible, and the time you save is more than worth it. Its a really great store, and makes me happy everytime I go.

Relative to value, value considers both price and what you get. Sure you can get lower prices but what you miss out on is proximity, time, and service. I did not understand that when I moved here two years ago. But go try to buy two bolts or get useful advice at a box store. Furthermore, this proprietor supports the community. These are all considerations in the value equation. I am not one of these people that have a "buy local" bumper sticker. You need to look at value however. There is also a value to having essential nearby services that operate on reasonable margins. Ace Hardware of Bainbridge is a good value. I am going there today.

We had a great experience with a checker named Chrissy. She overheard my sons disappointment with a light hed bought with allowance the day before - it had stopped working due to dead batteries. She took it upon herself to suggest a defective merchandise return and exchange - wow! I really appreciated it, especially when I saw my sons eyes light up. Great customer service that made my (and my sons day).

Love the handiness of this store. Staff is helpful and usually can find what I need without having to drive all the way to Poulsbo. Favorite checker is Chris, who always has a smile, and takes the time to make you feel like you got all that you needed. You certainly dont get that kind of experience off island which is why we live here and shop at our local stores. Michelle B.

I was browsing here and was being followed the min I walked in the door, when the guy following me asked if I needed help finding anything and I said no he asked me to leave because I "looked suspicious"... They called the cops... Being a white male Ive never been so judged in my life

Great service, nice people, good selection. Overall, a real neighborhood hardware and home store thats fun to shop, and they usually have what I am looking for. Always my "go-to" before heading off island to the big box stores. Shop local!

Good selection of supplies, tools and hardware for most small to medium projects, as well as some outdoors gear and plenty of housewares. Staff are very helpful. A great small-town hardware store.
