This is probably my "go to" store in the Newport News area. The staff is always super friendly and helpful. If you have any questions, any of the staff members can either help you OR will know exactly who to talk to in order to get you the assistance you need. I admit, that SOME prices are pretty high, which is just fine. Its not like Im at a yard sale. If anyone was to actually find it online, in this day and age where auction sites and other resale retail sites are big arenas for finding deals, it balances out with a total cost of what you would pay for shipping. Sometimes, its simply worth it to already have it in your hands and check it out, in order to decide whether its worth it or not to search elsewhere, or to make the repair. If there is something pretty well damaged that either the staff may have missed or may have actually occurred on the floor, perhaps a cart had a rough edge or a customers purse snagged a more fragile item.... the one beef I have... the one thing I dont like, and its the main reason this place gets only 4 stars, is that there is a "no negotiation" issue. Not that everyone wants to beat an establishment down to .99, but it would be nice to knock of 10 - 15% off a high priced USED item to accommodate a portion of a "repair cost". If a repair is on a seam, its really not a big deal to me, but if a fabric overlay on a garment is actually torn, then that panel of fabric will need to be replaced. (Just an example). Maybe this has changed, but Ill ask in ANY store I visit whether resale or traditional store, if a percent could be knocked off. Its not always the case, but it doesnt hurt to revisit the option to ask a manager every year or so, to see if policies or rules have changed. If it has, Id love for someone to fill me in. Other than that... I dont mind WAITING for prices to drop. (But it would be nice to be able to buy it while my mind is still focused on it). If its there when I come back and marked down at least that amount, GREAT. Ill get it, if its not "the worse for wear", but.... If not, then I know Ill find yet another great deal elsewhere in the store. By that time, Ive changed my mind on a style Im looking for anyway and yet another shopping spree is on in any of the .99 or 1.99 sections... or even throughout the store, but you have to actually make the time to LOOK. Seriously, who goes in just for a quick browse? :P Ok... So I do... but then I end up staying for the overall great deals and friendly staff.

I go here at least once a week for books and spend between 35-40 dollars, there is always a wonderful and updated selection to choose from. The staff is friendly and it is overall a good experience. Once money was even stolen from me and the manager paid for my things despite my telling her it was fine and I had to argue with her about taking repayment when I returned a few days later. Lately though, there is a new woman who is driving me crazy and making me not want to return. She has short red hair... today my girls were looking at a PLASTIC turkey baster while my husband and I looked at coffee mugs and they got yelled at saying it was glass... it was plastic and we were a foot away from our children, they were not left unsupervised. Then not even five minutes later we were going to let them pick out a toy and the same woman tells my nine year old she needs to be careful and not break anything when she picked up a STUFFED animal with my husband right beside her, again, supervised. We ended up leaving without letting the kids get anything because it wasnt worth staying any longer while being harassed. A few weeks ago, though I let the incident go, I was looking at the paperbacks and the children books are right across the aisle and my daughter was yelled at to get back with her mother even though she was in my eye sight and not more than five feet from me simply looking at a book about Santa. Despite that woman, I love going here for my books, my daughters always find some cute barbies to add to their collection, and we love donating here.

The DAV Thrift store chain is hands down my favorite set of thrift stores. They sort everything by SIZE (gasp!) rather than color!! What a novel thought! On top of that, they seem to have the best selection of upscale clothes as compared to other thrift stores. They regularly mark large swaths of clothes down to 99 cents, which is great. LOVE their shoe selection. It runs the full length of the store from front to back and is like six rows high!

Not sure why the clerk only asked me for ID when using my credit card. Two families of different ethnic background did not have to present an ID after paying with credit or debit card. I will not shop there anymore.

The best DAV I have been to. Big and well stocked with good turnover. Friendly people and a robust mens section of clothing. I have been to most of the thrift stores on the peninsula and this is probably my favorite.

Disabled veterans need more people looking out for them and caring about their cause. Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is rated D by CharityWatch and 50% of donations go to overhead expenses.

The employees are rude and childish. The prices are unnecessarily high and you might want to go to a regular department store because they have about the same. Basically, the store is horrible.

Decent selection, nicer than some other local thrifts. DAV is all non-profit which I appreciate, the staff is very nice, and in and behind the counter you can find nice name brand items.

Overall a fairly good Thrift...but sometimes just to pricey...a cheap Walmart brand T-shirt which is new $5 should not cost $3.99 From time to time I find nice things in there.
