Sugar Shack has claimed a following in Richmond, the site of the original location. It opened its first Washington branch in Alexandria, just off Henry and Madison St, today! Doughnut flavors vary by day, ranging from your classic glazed to mint julep, maple-bacon, samoas, and even ones made with local Alexandria Port City beer. Therefore, they do not post the doughnut flavors and you only find out what the flavors of the day are until you get to the front of the line. Each doughnut is hand-made. Sugar Shack also offers for Zekes Coffee, a local Baltimore coffee roastery. They also make espressos, lattes, and teas. Since it was their grand opening, it was insanely crowded today. Im talking out the door lines. Also, they limited 6 donuts per person today. My friends and I were planning to get a dozen to share between the three of us, but they refused to do that so we each got 6 donuts. That didnt make sense to me; after all, arent you just wasting more boxes? We got mint julep, strawberry glazed with chocolate chips, original glazed, chocolate, vanilla with M&Ms, vanilla with sprinkles, powdered, and orange cream with chocolate chips. I also ordered a honey lavender latte. The latte was pretty good, although maybe a tad sweet. The mint julep was delish! Actually, they were all pretty good. I cant wait to try their other specialty flavors like maple-bacon, samoas, smores, salted caramel, white chocolate, blueberry, etc. $1.55 for the regular donuts and $2.29 for specialty donuts. Open Monday to Thursday 6am-10pm, Friday 6am-11pm, Saturday 7am-11pm, Sunday 7am-9pm. Come and try Sugar Shack!

I heard about Sugar Shack because someone recommended it to me and because it is two blocks away from my house; already I had high expectations. Walking in at 6pm, they had a good variety of donuts still left. I ordered half a dozen (the Samoa, Cinnamon, powdered, glazed, the bacon donut and a pink icing one) despite these donuts being very overpriced. When I actually ate these donuts, they had to be the worst donuts I ever ate. I have literally had better donuts from 7-11. These donuts were so bad, I cant believe this place gets so many good reviews. The texture was very, very dry and not soft and moist like most donuts. Also, the consistency of the donuts was more like cake instead of donuts. Then, the toppings all tasted very bland and not well flavored. These donuts were a waste of money and calories. I personally cannot recommend this place. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but you only get one first impression.

Sugar Shack is my second favorite doughnut shop in the DC area. My first love will always be Astro Doughnuts - but for different reasons. Sugar Shack serves really really good doughnuts, they are examples of classic doughnuts perfected. For example, they have the "homer simpson" doughnut. You know the one - fried dough, pink frosting, and sprinkles. Mmm...sprinkles. If you want that, this is the perfect place. I think that they achieve the best "fry" making the doughnuts light and fluffy or making the cake doughnuts and fritters dense... yet somehow light. Once, I was having a really crappy day, and it was raining. I came to the sugar shack and had 2 doughnuts and their excellent coffee. I felt better. Maybe food cant work miracles, and maybe I shouldnt eat my feelings, but I believe in Sugar Shack. I genuinely endorse this spot, and love it.

Horrible service. The place lacks decor and does not look like an upscale donut shop. If they are going to charge three times what dunkin donuts costs, then the place should look three times better. The setup makes no sense and people wait in line only to find out that the advertised donuts are not available. I asked for chocolate donuts and the girl at the counter said, "this is all we got" in a condescending tone. Where is the customer service? I am not coming back to this place and I dont recommend it to anyone. You can find tasty donuts for a third of the price at other places. Waiting in line inside a cramped dingy hole in the wall is not worth paying up to 3 dollars for a donut. Also, you might want to avoid opening up future donut shops next to so many gyms.

No one answered the phone when we tried to call to check inventory. Webpage didnt list daily specials. went anyway. Special sign said blueberry cake was for sale. After waiting in line we were told 20 minutes for blueberry cake. Asked again 15 minutes later, still anther 20 minutes until blueberry cake would be ready. Sugar shack has a great product, and I have been willing to wait in the rather slow lines before... However not having your special of the day available seems like poor process and inventory management. For the price point I think sugar shack can do better around wait times and inventory....GREAT TASTING product! Just too slow and unreliable in delivering such a heavenly fried blueberry cake ecstasy!

The donuts are pretty good and they have some fun flavors! There is also a secret bar connected to it thats not so secret. You have to make reservations at it because its really small. The bar serves donuts from sugar shack and really fun drinks but everything is PRICY and the service is TERRIBLE. The hostess got mad at my group because she said our reservation was for the next day when in fact we had e-mail confirmation that the reservation was for that day. We thought this might have just been a fluke but the same exact thing happened to a group coming in as we were leaving. The hostess was magically able to find seating for our group and their group but she made a big deal about it in a rude way.

This place makes legit donuts. The one star rating is due to their lack of control of employees. There is always a ton of cigarette buds and trash next to the chair that they sit in on the sidewalk. This is the sidewalk of my apartment, which is covered in signs that say it is a smoke free property. Just a note to the manager, the leasing office is pushing for a fine due to break in lease agreement. Also, I will continue to give a one star review everyday that I see someone smoking. Just a hint, that is everyday! Dont forget to move your chair by the way, I will be throwing it away everyday that I pass by. Have a great day.

Tried this Sugar Shack multiple times because of positive reviews and word of mouth. The frosting on the donuts is always melted, possibly due to the fact that its extremely hot in the store. The toppings are terrible - the last time I went in all they had was kid cereal topped donuts. They had more in the back, but unless you know specifically what kind of "interesting" donuts they made on a particular day youre out of luck because there is no menu and staff is not helpful. Overall this place doesnt have the product or service to back up its trendy reputation and ridiculous prices.

My favorite local donut and coffee shop. The creativity put into some of these donut ideas is mind-blowing. They have a seemingly infinite number of flavors and combinations. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming, and offers suggestions on their favorites. They offer locally roasted coffee and make some fabulous lattes and other specialty drinks. If you live in the area or are just visiting, I would highly recommend coming here. The prices are extremely reasonable for what you get and definitely work your time.
