Pretty Paranormal
If you are not a Portland "Hipster" beware!!! I took my father to an appointment and while i was waiting decided to look for a coffee shop in the area. I googled nearest coffee shop and Heart Coffee Roasters popped up. (I am wearing sweats as i am getting over the flu and have no makeup on...fyi). I walked over there and as i hit the door I feel all eyes on me, the people sitting in front are all staring at me! Weird... but I brush it off. I get in line and receive the same attention. I started feeling like I was unwelcome. I order a large coffee and a blueberry scone. Instead of asking me if i am taking my purchase to stay or to go the employee says "Your taking this to go right?" I was, so i said yes. I walk over to the area with the cream and sugar and a woman scouls at me and takes up the entire area while chatting with a friend. After waiting for 5 minutes I reach for the creamer and she huffs and puffs, grabs her items and walks away. At this point i am feeling really awkward and want to get the hell out of this hipster twilight zone! As i walk out i get the same creepy staring all eyes on me as i did when i walked in. I have never felt this way anywhere, ever! The coffee was no better than the free coffee you get at your doctors visit and their large is a small anywhere else. Not worth $3.50!!! The scone was delicious! That is the ONLY reason i have then a second star! I will never step foot in there again!

In a city filled with great coffee, Heart offers a good tasting cup. But if you have a problem with pretentiousness, this place is not for you. From the entirely lowercase letters in its name (capital letters must be oppressive?) to the fact that they refuse to grind your bagged coffee for you to the reality that their coffee is very overpriced ($4 for an aeropress or a small iced coffee) heart is a difficult place to visit, nevermind re-visit. Did I mention that they shut off their internet on the weekends? And that they have a very prominent sign explaining that you should NOT interrupt the roaster at any time. I guess thats why they chose to put a bar that literally wraps around the roasting machine? Oh, and on a recent trip their bathroom was "Out of Order" and they were completely unwilling to allow customers to use an available bathroom just feet away from their regular one. In a city filled with great coffee, there are much more welcoming environments to enjoy. I recommend skipping heart coffee roasters and focusing on Ristretto, Stumptown, Nossa Familia, and the other great coffee roasters of Portland.

Highly depends on what you want at the moment. Im in the stop if youre close but no need to seek it out comment cluster. This review is based on an October 2015 noon-ish stop & another a year or so earlier. Each stop fueled by a mocha. Good space to maintain a chill (mellow = deliberate = slow) as long as you bring the chill with you. If you want a classic Italian approach to espresso (grab, stand, & quaff); not so much. Good mocha at higher priced end of Portlands bell curve. Good to me lands at the overly nuanced end of espresso & bitter chocolate spectrum (not too far from weak). Great is a distinct bite of both brown parts buried in a viscous foam without excess sweetness. Either rating requires the option to enjoy my drink in a ceramic mug. I think Peets delivers a better mocha @ a much better price. I continue to mourn the end of the majestic Bakery Bar mocha which may be a touchstone to some. BB at both the Water Ave & Glisan St locations before the latter prepared to morph into Kerns Kitchen.

Made me feel unwanted and rushed me out like I was an infectious disease. You could have patiently waited 3 seconds as I got a lid for my plain black coffee- I didnt even order a time consuming drink to make- out of consideration for your transparent intolerance. You didnt need to hover over me as if my getting a lid would infect the establishment. - I understand that dogs are not allowed inside but, I called ahead to check and was told it was ok. Regardless it was tactless to rush me the f out of there and tell me dogs are unsanitary. I wasnt planning on staying anyway and wont return. With no scarcity of pretentious coffee/& ambience in Portland, your existence is dispensable. And many other coffee shops allow well behaved dogs, and at the very least have tact in telling me otherwise. - And odds are, my sweet, 6 pound indoor dog is more sanitary than most humans. Also I recall that your bathrooms gross, my dog wouldnt even go in there. :)

Small batch coffee roasting is all the rage and Heart is at the Heart of it. Wonderful original coffees served to perfection. Really neat modern bar to sit at and check out the roasting process live. The Baristas always have great suggestions of what is good that day. Im a black coffee, americano kind of guy but they always seem to have something along my lines that is unique. I noticed laptops so they must have wifi. Very modern but comfortable. I havent noticed any food or baked goods but I may be wrong. The coffee is the star here, and if your looking for fantastic small batch coffee this is a great place to try some.

Pretty standard hipster coffee shop but its very classy and cute inside. Clean sexy lines and finishes with their own roaster. Great coffee, good small selection of pastries and avid seating inside and out for nice days. The front windows all open up in the summer so enjoy some fresh air and fresh brew. I like that this place is small but not tiny and located in a less hopn spot than smack in the middle of Hawthorne. Go Burnside! Its in my list of great stops for an afternoon around 28th and Burnside. Here, Palace, Smut, Whole foods for movie treats then dinner and a movie at the Laurelhurst for 2 to 5 bucks.

This is my favorite cup of coffee in Portland. There is something extremely satisfying than a drip coffee of Heart, sitting outside on one of those orange chairs, and just taking in the day. Im not sure what they do or their roasting methods (rumor is they take their roasting VERY, very seriously) and it absolutely shows. Do yourself a favor and grab a pastry at your favorite bakery- head to Heart for a cup of coffee- and take a road trip to your favorite spot. It will be a winning Portland day.

I used to love heart. But the last couple times Ive gone in, my $5 mocha was lukewarm. They dont have any way to heat it once its made. And after waiting for my beverage for ten minutes last time I was there, I didnt have time to wait for it to be remade. I appreciate what they are trying to do at Heart. Its a lovely atmosphere and the ingredients are quality. But waiting that long for a disappointing coffee means I likely wont be returning anytime soon.

The Mochas at Heart are amazing and getting one is on my personal Top 10 Things to do in Portland list. The staff are always friendly and professional, the environment is modern but not pretentious, and the prices are reasonable. They are open 7-7, everyday, have a unique selection of baked goods (try to oreo-looking cakesters) and roasted beans in addition to the espresso-based basic drinks. It is my favorite coffee shop in Portland.
