First off, let me say that the products here are very good. However, due to some of the worst customer service Ive ever encountered, we are going to look for these quality products from a different vendor. I dont know the sales reps name, but shes always there at the register, and shes SLOW. Not only slow, but really not a nice person and probably shouldnt be anywhere near customers. For example, a few months ago we came in to return an unused product. It took this woman literally ten minutes to process the ~$30 return, while the line piled up behind us. This Tuesday, which was the second time we returned product (and yes, we thought long and hard about even bothering after the first experience), the same woman was at the register. She didnt bother looking at our receipt to see when we had purchased it, instead just demanding to know when wed bought it and then just staring at us. We told her it had been about two months. Then--get this--she WAGGED HER FINGER AT US and said "Oh no you dont, we have a strict 30-day return policy." Okay. I can deal with a 30-day policy, even if it isnt printed on the receipt. But, as anyone who has dealt with customers or who has been a customer can tell you, its all in how you say it. This woman, and I really wish I could remember her name (she was working on the afternoon/evening of Tuesday, December 18, 2012) should be taken off the sales team before she drives this place into the ground.

We love and buy the products at ecohaus, was environmental building supply, BUT it is always a challenge to get help that addresses questions and issues from the perspective of the customer. It feels a bit like we know about these things - you should learn what you need to know elsewhere instead of actually seeing what the persons questions are and just answering and HELPING with that issue. Having said that, I think its possible that an issue is the layout in the store. The people at the desk are actually working on billing, etc. right there, so I inevitably feel like Im interupting them from their work. They have to come around an meet me and then just take me to the area of paints, flooring, etc. and get back to their work. I get so I dont even go up to the desk anymore, just go to the area and try to find what I need and then check out. Not great for education value when a point is to make this eco-friendly product base inclusive so we can actually save the planet one floor/tile/wall at time. I like the products tremendously and they deserve credit for pioneering these products, but truthfully I can see that as the products are carried closer to our home I wont bother driving in there. There is a major market imo for multiple eco stores that provide more education, friendly (and glad to share about the great products) staff as well as a large range of healthy products for us and our environment.

I went to buy paint to cover the concrete floor in my basement. I painted half of it with Millers concrete paint (because I already had it) and the other half with Ivy concrete paint from Green Depot (which instructions stated for indoor outdoor use and ready to have heavy traffic go through it). First of all, it smelled so intense that I got stomach sick within 1 hour. I hired a contractor and he painted the rest of the basement and that night, he got sick. Second, after two weeks, it snowed and melted overnight and my basement got trickles of water that run through and went straight to the drain. The miller paint was not affected at all, the Ivy paint cracked and came out in big chunks. When I complained about it, they told me that 99% of the time the fault of a problem like that was of the way it was applied, the characteristics of the site, the weather... and so on. Whatever it was, the Miller paint was painted within the same day and was under the same circumstances and still looks beautiful and perfect. They did give me my money back for the paint, but I still had to pay my contractor and spend many many hours scraping the damaged paint and applying other products on top to try to fix the problem that it created. Just a little water on it ruined it, I can only imagine it in an outdoor area with Portland weather. That would be a catastrophe! I will never ever buy that brand in my life.

After planning months in advance for building materials, we finally came to pick up our purchases (7 hour drive) only to find out the load was twice the size (and weight) as the salesperson told us. We had to buy an expensive trailer hitch and major hassle in order to get the flooring home. Also, we were sold a piece of juniper for a mantle (after viewing photos ecohaus emailed us) and when we came to pick it up and opened the bubble wrap around it, found it was full of beetles (many still alive), hundreds of holes and tunnel scars and a very uncool piece of wood. We were told we could putty the holes. In doing a bit of research we discovered Ecohaus sold us something they knew very little about and didnt bother to educate themselves until after the fact. Needless to say, we found the entire Ecohaus shopping experience to be very stressful! Also, we had kitchen cabinets bid and the price was double for the same cabinet line available elsewhere. BE CAREFUL WHEN SHOPPING HERE!!!!

The products are great, and you can find really good prices if you have done your research and you know what you want. Unfortunately, the staff does not know any technical details about the products they sell, and rather than look it up, they make it up. I bought some cork flooring, was told no vapor barrier was needed over concrete ("unless it makes you feel better!"). Not true, as the manufacturers installation instructions inform. Speaking of which, I was assured the installation instructions would be in the box with the materials by two staff members. Also not true. Fortunately, digital age, I found them online. Great place if you know what you want, but not the place to get educated. Full disclosure; I used to work for them back in the Pearl location on Lovejoy. We did not part on the best of terms. I thought the products were great then, and I think they are great now, but I think product knowledge is extremely important, and Im afraid they still dont got it.

I was trying to price paperstone and cabinets. It took going in twice and calling twice to finally get a bid on Paperstone - and the bid was not for what I asked for so I gave up. I never heard from them about cabinets. I was also told Lyptus was a more expensive wood for cabinetry than Cherry-with attitude I might add. If you are interested in Lyptus try Huggy Bears Cupboards - they have been amazing and the price is the same for lyptus and cherry. There is another place in town that sells Paperstone, a wholesaler, so youll have to go through a contractor to purchase - you can find other dealers for Paperstone on their website. Also, Safecoat Transitional Primer was recommended to me a few years ago to go from an old, probably lead, oil based paint to latex. I did all the proper prep, sanded, etc. and now the outer layer of paint comes off easily. Im going to have to hire a professional to strip and repaint - thats a bigger job than I care to tackle.
