Absolutely worthless attempt at purchasing gear. One week ago I saw a climbing sling i wanted. I should have bought it, because when I returned this week they are sold out. So, I inquired about ordering. Employee was a young girl who had no clue about climbing gear. Took forever and a day to even convey what I needed as she fumbled through the stores computer search function. Finally tells me she cant find EVEN THOUGH I argued it was in stock one week ago. She said get more details and it will take 1-2 weeks to arrive (so long, considering other online companies ship within 48 hours). Call today with more details, girl who answers phone is clueless and searches for "swing" instead of sling (according to her). Have to ask for a manager who tells me I cannot special order this product because its due to arrive in their store. I naturally ask when. He says "could be days or months" & explains the 2 previous Stirling Rope orders were cancelled.... So NO CLUE WHEN ILL GET THIS ORDER, BUT I CANT EVEN ORDER IT. In an attempt to support local business I ask if hell set one aside for me upon arrival. He agrees, I ask for yellow. He tells me it didnt come in yellow. I aside I saw it IN THE STORE ONE WEEK AGO, the exact product in yellow. Rather than any attempt at salvaging my business, he refuses to offer to set aside one of each color or any, claiming "I dont know what the vendor will send me" BUY ONLINE FOR CHEAPER + BETTER SERVICE + MORE STOCK + KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF. WILL NEVER RECOMMEND NOR RETURN TO. GOOD RIDDANCE!

My boyfriend and I frequent Appalachian and Kendall Cliffs often, spend a lot of money in climbing equipment and climbing. We both bought new climbing shoes this week.. $200 each. I bought mine a size too small (no one helped me when I was purchasing them, at all), I put them on at Kendall to climb noticed they might be too small DID NOT CLIMB IN THEM and walked over to see if I could exchange them since I had bought them 2 hours ago. Sherry saw a little dust of chalk on them and told me once they are climbed in they cannot be returned. I explained to her that I had only put them on and walked around the rock climbing gym.. which does have chalk present in it, yes. But that I had not climbed in them - check the tapes :) So when I told her they were not climbed in she then let me know that the policy was different then the aforementioned policy she had just told me - NOW she tells me all climbing sales are final. Strange that they were not just a minute ago, I could have returned them had they not had a speck of chalk on them. They had not even been out of the store for 2 hours, they had not been on my feet for more than 5 minutes. Customer service is obviously not a priority for Sherry, I was going to order these shoes online and decided to support Appalachian instead - I obviously made a mistake. We will be taking our business else where, and I will let everyone know how Sherry treated me :) If you dont want to deal with the customer... dont be in customer service.

Bought a Steripen Classic 3 there, which apparently had a defective UV light. When I called the store to inquire I was told it was "no problem" to come back in to return or exchange the unit. When I did so, the manager, Sherry (sp?), said it would have to be returned to the manufacturer before any exchange or refund could take place. Very big waste of time. Spent the better part of a day having to deal with it. Used to be a fun store to shop at. Have shopped there for years and have had generally good experience with them in the past, but In this instance, their customer service was quite incoherent - and the dismissive attitude of the manager disturbing and offensive. Note to Appalachian Outfitters: when a customer purchases something from you that turns out to be defective, and it becomes a hassle to at least exchange it, something is not right. For any sort of good customer service, it would have been an occasion to try to rectify the matter asap, and (gasp!) maybe even apologize for the inconvenience.

Call me stupid, but Ive shopped at this store since it was in Canton 20+ years ago, before it moved to Truxell Rd. Ive NEVER had a good experience in the store. I have had fun rock climbing. The staff always acts like they are so much cooler and more "outdoorsy" than me. Maybe they dont like the fact that I dont have a Subaru? Last week I bought a pair of shoes, ended up not using them and tried to return them yesterday. I did not have the receipt, or the box, although I paid for them on my credit card, and they logged the sale in their system. They said they could tell I never wore them and offered to refund 75% of my total because the box was missing, and the next person that bought the shoes would really want the box. Out of principal I kept the shoes and will shop at REI, Backcountry, GearExpress and countless other online retailers. I will no longer pay exorbitant prices and be mistreated while trying to support a local store.

The stuff at this store is NOT cheap. Definitely a place to buy the big things you want to invest the money in, but not much else. That said, Ive bought high-end stuff here a couple times and had a wonderful experience with the employees. Both times the employee helping me was very knowledgeable about what I was looking at, and had answers to every question I asked. I felt very confident afterwards in spending the money on the product I walked away with, and have not had cause to regret spending the money there.

The staff are friendly, and the selection is pretty good. Only high end and top quality brands are carried, so if you want the cheap version of some thing you may need to go elsewhere. While you can find most of their products online for slightly cheaper, their prices are reasonable. For things like hiking boots, climbing harnesses, backpacks and the like, I would rather pay 10% more and get fitted correctly the first time. Also if you have a valid Boy Scout registration card you can get 10% off.

I tried to buy a pair of pants as a Christmas gift for my son and was told that their sale items are not returnable. The store manager told me If they dont fit, they could not be returned ! I was very disappointed and expected more especially because they claim to be a high quality service oriented business. If I spend premium dollars, I expect premium service. This was not the case with these people. They lost me as a future customer. Urgh!

Absolutely will never go back there. After purchasing over $500.00 worth of merchandise from them for Christmas gifts. One was found to have a small hole, when my wife returned that one only for a replacement they said that they can not accept returns because their vendor will not refund Appalachian Outfitters . We tried saying that we did not buy from their vendor we bought from them. They still refused to accept it. Never again.
