Bought a leg of lamb here recently. It wasnt in stock, so they special-ordered it. On the day of my dinner they called me up, very apologetic: their supplier was having problems, and they didnt have the leg. They promised it a few days later, but offered no discount for my inconvenience. On the day of my (rescheduled) dinner, I called ahead to make sure they had the leg and that it hadnt been frozen: yes, it was, and no, it hadnt. Great! When I got to the store, however, they couldnt locate the meat. After about ten minutes, in which they concluded the leg hadnt been delivered and in which I insisted that I had called ahead and gotten the green light, they managed to find my order, an Australian leg with 12% fat content. I needed a fourteen-inch roast to fit my pan, and asked the young man behind the counter if he could crack the bone so I could fold the leg over in the pan. Im not sure he knew what I meant, but in any event he insisted it couldnt be done. What? This is basic butchery, folks. After a little dickering ("I just want to make sure youre getting exactly what you want"), he agreed to cut the leg at exactly 14" with his band saw, a task he delegated to another butcher. The other butcher came out with the cut leg and asked me how it looked. I told him it looked great, and asked whether it was 14 inches: he said he didnt know how long it was. Hunh? The first butcher, sensing my exasperation came back and explained that he hadnt told the second butcher exactly where to cut. Then why all the dickering and promises of satisfaction? I appreciate what the Meat House is trying to do in my area, but Im not sure the meat and the service I received were any different from my local Hannaford or Price Chopper. The employees all seemed a little young and inexperienced. They were polite and apologetic, true: but for the money I paid, Id prefer to forego all of the anxiety and hand-wringing.

I like Meat House, but you have to be careful what you order and I wouldnt use this as my go-to place for meat. Best bets are the marinated sirloin tip kebabs, shaved steak if they have it (this is what you need for Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches; it was recently available at $5.99 a pound which is a real bargain because its sirloin) and the various salads and prepared meat dishes in the cold case at the back of the store. Other meats are sometimes higher than at Price Chopper next door for the same quality and the selection of high end or natural meats is limited. They have a good selection of regional specialities like Saratoga Peanut Butter and you can sample many of them while they put together your meat order. Sandwiches are available but theyre hit or miss, sometimes great, sometimes carelessly prepared. Of note to early adopters, Meat House no longer offers the odd "service" where the counter person will offer to carry your small package to your car.

After work I decided to try this place since Id never been there. Service was okay, but thats where it ended. I ordered their steak-tip sandwich, but they were out of sub rolls and asked if I wanted it on a hard roll insisting that it was an equal portion size. It was not. The sandwich was half the size, but they only took a dollar off the final price. So I ended up paying seven dollars for a mediocre, small sandwich that took them fifteen minutes to make, even though all they did was microwave pre-cooked steak tips and cut a a hard roll in half. They wont see my business again.

This Butcher is the best I have seen. I happened to be passing by on my way from Rutland to NJ, and now I make this a checkpoint along the way. They always have a deal going on in the store and everyone in the store is very knowledgeable about their products. They are also very friendly and inviting. Really I cant say enough about this store. I have gone to other high end butchers, but never have gotten the same feeling as when I go to the Meat House. My favorite must have is their house steak tips!

The most enjoyable staff and great atmosphere. To me and my friends stationed with me in Saratoga, the Meat House came to be one of "those places". The ones EVERYONE goes to and absolutely EVERYONE loves. As long as your an enjoyable customer, the owners were known to give extra throw-ins not to mention the occasional marinated steak tips for free! The steaks are very good pieces and the rest of the store has a wonderful selection as well.
