I stumbled upon this place as an undergraduate at RIT back in 1999 and my first impression of Lucky Lotus was that it was an art studio as much as it was a tattoo studio. When I came back months later to get work done, I realized how true my assumption/impression was. When their website/marketing materials state that there is no flash on the wall, and that they only do original, 100% custom work, it means it! There are a TON of options when it comes to getting tattooed. Most places are full of tattoo guys who will emulate this that or whatever. Lucky lotus is a studio full of artists who choose primarily to utilize skin and ink as their medium. Not only have I gotten some of the best work Ive ever seen done by Steve Shales, but I feel like through 40+ hours of sessions Ive learned more about the culture of tattooing, what the true best practices are, etc. Among my most important things to note for someone looking to get work done that they will enjoy for a long time, unlike other peoples old, moldy and fading ink, the work Ive gotten at Lucky Lotus over the past 10 or so years is still as crisp and as sharp as it was once it finished healing. It is also important to note that I no longer live in Rochester, or New York for that matter. I travel 300+ miles each time I come to get more work done. Well worth the trip!

I just had my second tattoo done here by Dawn and she is AMAZING!!! I had a portrait done of my dog (yorkie) and she not only made it look identical, she captured him in a way that I cant describe!! It doesnt just look like a yorkie, when people look at my arm they immediately know that its MY dog. All of the artists at Lucky Lotus are amazing, I had my first tattoo (half sleeve) done by Brandon and he also did an AMAZING job. The studio moved into a loft type space not too long ago and it is beautiful and extremely clean!! Ill try posting a picture so everyone can see the amazing job that Dawn did on my forearm!!! The picture was taken soon after so my skin may look a little red!

VERY unimpressed with the way i was treated the second i walked in the door. I had called in advance and asked about a "walk-in" and he told me to come right in. Upon arrival, i was discussing my tattoo with the man behind the counter and every idea i gave him was immediately shot down. I kept trying to explain the way i wanted it to look on MY body as MY tattoo but his rude remarks and unwillingness to help a customer made me walk right out the door. Coming in for my FIRST tattoo ever, i was thoroughly dissatisfied with the entire experience and instead chose elsewhere to follow up with a different appointment.

I was looking for a good artist and nice shop for me and my wife . We walk in shops for 3wks till we walk into luckylotustattoostudio ..Greeted by the owner steve he took time to talk too us and we told him what we were looking for. Didnt make appointment right away walk out talk to wife and we both agree this was the spot we been looking for..TO MAKE STORY SHORT WE BEEN GETTING TATTOO WITH STEVE FOR 3 YRS NOW .WILL NOT GO TO ANYONE ELSE AND YES I WOULD RECOMMED FRIENDS AND FAMILY...VERY PROFESSIONAL SHOP AND GREAT ARTIST HANDS DOWN... for my first tattoo, I was a bit little nervous but Karrah who was super cool, relaxed and professional kept me at ease and calm. However, that wasnt the best part.... it was the end result... She is an absolutely talented tattoo artist and I cant be any more satisfied and happy with my first tattoo! There is definitely more to come!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANYONE to come here check it out because the decorum and the staff all complement this store... You cant get any better than this. Everyone working there are talented as well. Thank you guys!!

Got my first tattoo from Brandon today and the whole experience was great! I was pretty nervous but he talked me through everything and showed me all the equipment beforehand so there were no surprises. Steve did a GREAT job. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality and service. Steve was willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that my design came out the way I wanted it. Dont be intimidated by the industrial style building. The studio space is very clean and comfortable.
