I bought my first moped here last year and I can safely say that Second Stroke is THE place in NYC to get the perfect vehicle for NYC. Besides mopeds, the shop offers helmets, waterproof covers, kryptonite chains (which I HIGHLY recommend, saved my bike from a thief who had to have been trying to saw off the chain for at least a week when I was out of town) and other accessories. Ari (not me, the Ari who owns the shop) and Pete are super helpful and friendly. As a first time rider and without the slightest clue as to how to change a spark plug I thought it would be intimidating walking into a garage full of moped fanatics, but I was very happy to find a place that was receptive and open to new riders; never condescending in their answers to what tasted like really stupid questions when they came out of my mouth. I ran into some problems with my bike last summer about 5 months after I purchased it (blown tube, exhaust issue) and they had my bike purring like new 2 days later. I thought what they charged for the necessary repairs was very reasonable. I stored my bike in their garage over the harsh winter for only 50 dollars per month where it was safe from the elements and would-be thieves. Going in this afternoon to pick it up after Pete put some new modifications on it - pumped that the weather is finally turning, Ill be riding everyday and Ill sleep soundly at night knowing Second Stroke will always be there for my moped related needs.

I went in to service my Motobecane Moped in September, now I gotta say the person who works at the front there named Ari seems to not really know what he is talking about and has an attitude. I called a week earlier to inquire about a carb upgrade and i was quoted about $82 dollars. When I picked up the bike, after it took them a week and a half to install a condenser and a carb. He charged me $120 dollars for the carb (not including all other fees and hourly rates). I brought to his attention that he quoted me less when I called earlier and he nonchalantly said sorry and changed the price. As soon as I started coming there more and learning how to fix things myself and not having them work on it I got more attitude from Ari. Its like these people dont WANT you to learn how to work on these things yourself. If you want advice about mopeds I would just speak to Pete in there, he is the guy that can actually help you and not worry about ripping you off.

2nd stroke is the only place to go for moped service in...well its the only one i know of in ny so...yeah... anyway, its a little shop packed with beautiful old bikes and the back where the work is done has even more mopeds from the last few centuries. when the weather is good they have moped rides which are a thrill, if you dont mind people laughing a little at you. The only downfall is they are pretty expensive when it comes to service work. And i say expensive in relative terms to how much mopeds cost in the first place. at something like 40 bucks an hour your small problem will cost you half what your scooter is worth. so only if you cant do work or you got a machine that cant go to waste then trust no one else with it.

Why there is no -100? My advice guys for everybody. Dont go. I REPEAT DONT GO TO THAT SOTRE. If u need fix your moped try to do this by your self but dont go there. I had some problems with carburetor and exhaust pipe, bulbs. I waste 2 or more weeks. Maybe three or more times they told me it will be ready today. So what I had. I spent 800$. The bike starting faster than previous time. Lights still not working. All turns signals worked. Problem was with bulbs. Now no turns signals no brake signal. My experience-your protection. And that porky guy drive me crazy. I asked him about price maybe 5 or more times. How much this, that. He didnt respond to me. He just sad that I will call u.

I was walking around the area and I spotted a couple of mopeds outside a store, I went in to inquire about them and a chubby gentleman there seemed very "cold" to me like as if he wasnt expecting me to buy anything. I asked if they sell used mopeds since i have experience with two stroke machines, and the person tried pushing a $1500 sporty one. If I wanted to shell out more than a grand on a two wheel bike with a lawnmower Id rather shell out three grand for a Vespa. These people need to know not to judge by looks, I wouldve made business with them but the attitude completely turned me off.

I bought a Tomos ST from Ari at Second Stroke in April 2012. One of the best decisions I have made. That little moped is great for NYC. I get around quickly and easily. Besides it is just plain fun to ride. I go everywhere. Brooklyn, Queens and all over Manhattan. You just cant go wrong for the price. Service is great too! Ari keeps it running like it was brand new. I cant say enough about how great Second Stroke Mopeds is. Forget the Vespa or the Piaggio or the Kymco. If you want cheap transportation with no headache get a Tomos from Second Stroke.

I always get my bike fixed there. They are always fast, helpful, and knowledgeable! Stinky is the best moped mechanic hands down! (I am sure everyone else is equally good) To all the "shop hours are too expensive" people. Its not too expensive, you just cant afford it! You wanna watch hours of youtube videos and DIY your bike...more power to you. If you dont got time for all that you gotta pay the cost my man.

Okay selection of some parts. Bottomline is that the staff are not too friendly. Cold to be exact. Mopeds should be fun. If working on and living a moped life makes one so miserable. Then perhaps they should choose something else to do. Sorry wasnt really an enjoyable experience.
