Have been a member of REI since way "back in the day." Over decades of time in the outdoors I have racked up quite a bit on money on products from their store. I have always been impressed on their "100% satisfaction guarantee," which at one time was TRUTH. However, I will tell you this is, in my opinion, false advertising. 100% satisfaction implies a subjective reaction and response to a product and thus no return should be questioned and full refund should be given......if this is indeed their policy. Again, I have been impressed and in the beginning, up until the past few recent years, much scrutiny and out and out refusal to take a return has been more likely a customer experience (based on my own, as well as, others that I see in these reviews). If it does not honor this and uses this phrase for advertising then it is FALSE ADVERTISING and I feel is reportable to the BBB. I may do this. But, recently, after having the same problem with 3 of the very same items I finally got a refund on one. If I have another occurrence of this I will produce a letter to BBB to petition REI remove this advertising ploy. I find it disingenuous and not true of the spirit of an organization I became a member of in the late 70s. I write this to warn buyers that "100% satisfaction guarantee" is not the complete nor even near the accurate truth.....be forewarned. It is sad for me to see a business like this make such an ethical compromise.

I bought a pair off cross country skis, and the salesman informed me that there is a 1 year return policy for any reason bring them back and get a full refund in 12 months. I thought this was amazing and started recommending this store to everyone. I used them 1 time and realized its not a hobby Im willing to take on, and tried to bring them back, but just to be sure they could take them back I called them and they said "most the time we can take them back, but just to be sure bring them in and well take a look and based on the condition is weather or not we can take them back" (theyre in like new condition) I got there and they said only warranty defects can they give a refund. I thought this was a great store and have made many other purchases here but I will never be returning because Im not going to be lied to and mislead to make a $400 sale. Not to mention how long it took to get somome to help with the initial purchase.

I love REI; theyve got great gear for just about anything outdoors, and their prices are generally very competitive. Their return policy is very liberal - Ive had issues with two pairs of shoes, one after three months, and one after two and a half years, and they gladly refunded my money on both when things went wrong that shouldnt have gone wrong. The only reason they dont get a 5/5 is their continual asking "are you a member?" Its so awkward! I dont care if its your job or not, I dont want to have to say "yes" to five separate people every time I go in.

Ive always had phenomenal coustomer service at any REI Ive visited, but today was treated terribly by an employee for asking about returning gloves that an 80 year old bought me and didnt save the receipt for. I was told that there was no way to get store credit with out a receipt and was also told that there was no way for them to know that the globes were purchased there, even though the originally tags were still on the gloves. The tags were from REI. It wasnt the policy that bothered me as much as the attitude that I was an idiot for even asking.

was there last week and bought some winter gear. at the register the clerk asked if i was a member, i simply said no thank you to communicate i was NOT interested - he continued to sell membership to me - so i said no thank you, i am not interested. he kept selling the membership. apparently not interested translates into, please tell me more. ive had this same sales clerk twice - it actually felt like he was harassing me for not being a member. i dont want to go back to this store. some customers really dont like the hard sell approach.

I went in for a exchange and couple of compact can openers and to kill some time a lazy afternoon. The staff was very attentive behind the counter and around the store. Ive never had trouble find service the many times Ive been to this location. The only problem I have with REI is the lack of a price match policy. They say this is because of their wonderful return policy and Co-op membership benefits. These are great but do not do much for me if there is a discounted price for more than 10% off elsewhere.

They sold me on the membership because Id receive a $20 gift card, when I tried to use it online it didnt work, I called REI customer service and they said the worker didnt activate the gift card and now I have to waste my time going in store for them to fix the issue if I want my $20 gift card to work, not even worth my time. Keep your $20, next time try to activate your gift cards. I wont ever be using my "membership", bad experience.

Great selection of outdoor products. Helpful staff. The unique aspect I enjoy is being able to test gear before. If you need a backpack, the staff will size it, add weight, and recommend that you walk around the store with it. This helps you narrow down the best product for you. And if you are a member of the co-op, you are able to have a lengthy return period if the product doesnt meet your needs/fails

I had a great time at this store, the knowledgeable staff directed me straight to the hat that I wanted. In and out in no time! And dear david -- The staff (as with most retail staff these days) have specific membership sales goals Im sure, so you really cant blame them. Its part of their job, just be polite.

First time in REI and was blown away. Kirk came up to us right away and helped us through out our entire search. He spent a good 45 minutes running around finding us things we might like more or may fit better. He did this without being pushy or trying to get us to buy the more expensive item. Loved it!

Generally a fan of REI, but when I needed to get a life jacket for my dog, I was told I cant bring her to the store to make sure it fits right. Sorry, not going to buy a $90 life jacket when I dont know if it will fit her. Every other store that sells dog gear will let you bring a dog to try stuff on.

My daughter is back packing thru Europe but is a beginner hiker. John met us staring blankly at the backpacks. Instantly he asked us some questions about how she wanted the pack to function, amount of supplies and weight. We left as members, backpack in hand and big fans of John and REI!
