I do not have an actual experience shopping at the Newburyport MA Market Basket. I walked into the store and never got past the front entrance. The store smelled so bad I knew I could not purchase fresh food there. I do not purchase a lot of processed food or canned food, so fresh food quality is very important to me. The store smelled of old rotten meat and vegetables/fruit. Perhaps they have their garbage too close to the front, perhaps they have the door to their back area where food is stored too close to the front...I dont know. I guess to my mind it doesnt matter what the cause of the smell may be - the problem is that there is a smell. If anyone out there knows that they have cleaned up their act in Newburyport, please write a review here and tell me I am wrong. I have friends and work acquaintances who shop Market Basket in Haverhill MA. They are very happy, but I have to take into consideration the expense for gas when I drive so far from home to grocery shop.

The area around seafood always smells bad much like other Market Baskets and the service quality is mixed at best. The prices are clearly overrated In fact, Shaws has reduced prices so much and has additional savings via their Mymixx program such that my last 6 shopping trips at Shaws would have been priced higher at Market Basket. You can still save a lot of money by shopping Sams Club... 99% of their selection is indeed lower price (alright if you would otherwise buy store brand at MB but the selection forces you to get name brand at Sams, its 90% but you get the idea). Occasional trips to Trader Joes when Im in the neighborhood still saves me a bunch over any supermarket on all natural products too.

Ive lived up here and shopped at the store for over 30 years never have a complaint The person talking about the smell all I can say is I have the best nose going if that store had any odd smells I would smell them and I shop at other stores to in the area

What can you say about Market Basket that everyone does not already know? It has pretty good selection, good prices, friendly workers. No complaints and I dont even mind the usually crowded parking lot because I can get what I need.

Im all for saving the environment by no longer using plastic bags here. But to charge per paper bag? And when you bring your own usable bags they still use paper bags that you have to pay for.. No thanks
